One of my favorites is the pirate "accent" that's persisted just because the actor from Treasure Island decided to talk like that for no good reason. But it was funny, and people liked it. Reality is there's no pirate accent, because they weren't from a particular country or culture, they were from a lot of places and had a lot of accents.

HBO's Rome gives a subtle nod to the "You too, Brutus?" line in a funny, tongue in cheek manner. Caesar is assassinated but says nothing; instead he tries to cover his face with his toga. In the very next episode, Cassius and the other plotters gather to discuss whether they should also eliminate Mark Antony. Brutus, who is adamantly against this, retorts "You too, mother?" when Servilia concurs with the others.

"The exception that proves the rule" saying isn’t just for any old exception. (Even though it is beginning to be used that way....which is just meaningless) It's specifically for something that doesn't state the rule directly, but does imply the rule exists through the stated exception....... A good example is something like a road sign that says "no parking from 7am to 9am". That is the exception that "proves" you can park there at any other time, even though it doesn't actually say that you can.

4:32 Not entirely accurate. The modern ecclesiastical pronunciation is strictly modeled after the traditional pronunciation in Italy at the time, so it's only accurate for texts written in Italy. Latin was the official language in the Middle Ages for essentially whole Europe, and each area had its own pronunciation tradition that wasn't necessarily similar to the Italian one. Sure, most of those traditions are utterly awful (especially the English one), but nonetheless the Italian convention can't be defended as accurate for the entire continent - it's only accurate for a specific period and specific place. Hell, in Poland the schools and churches still use the traditional Slavic pronunciation, and at least when I was in highschool (~15 years ago) the existence of other pronunciation conventions wasn't even acknowledged. So personally I think only classical can be defended as applicable for Latin in general, because at least that's what actual native speakers used, and it's what the spelling was designed for anyway.

The most challenging thing is that people are unwilling to let go of their erroneous beliefs about Rome and are stubbornly and aggressively ready to defend them. White houses and white statues, as well as doors and ceilings made of pure gold, also came up when I tried to discuss about one history magazine article, which told that ancient Rome was not as clean as modern people think, and that ancient people had to be careful because of horse droppings and other dirt that accumulated on the Roman streets every time when they were not cleaned. Unfortunately, the article triggered some of the discussion participants to rage and defend that Rome was "greatest city ever" and "the whitest of whites and the goldest of golds" as a city tha was "effectively kept cleaner than modern cities by Roman sewers, running water and latrines". Eventually the whole discussion got to the point that the depiction of ancient Rome as a "city of stinky dunghills" or as a "city of colorfully painted houses" was claimed to be "Christian propaganda (or; rewriting of history)" because "they want to defame the ancient city." And in the end, it was impossible to discuss with them after this and I had to leave it at that because the situation had escalated into an online forum version of a riot.
