Thank you for explaining the difference between fragrance free and unscented! I always wondered about this. My philosophy on health is to reduce as many negatives as possible and include as many positives as possible, without stressing about it if it’s not perfect. Because I think there is a threshold of how many “toxins” or free radicals or stressors or whatever that’s bad for your body to handle before it starts to develop diseases. Of course sometimes you can’t prevent diseases, but a lot of times you can. I still think it’s sketchy that parabens build up in tissue, there must be a threshold of how much parabens the body can take before it starts to cause a disfunction. So I try to stay away from parabens as much as possible, but if the best product for my skin has parabens in it, I’m not going to stress about it. Because in that situation the positives outweigh the negatives and stressing about it would only make my whole philosophy moot, because stress is the worst! lol.
@aliesefitch10992 жыл бұрын
Agreed!!!!
@Spiritualsciencehealing2 жыл бұрын
Okay but the thing is, parabens are removed from the body in 36 hours after being broken down by certain enzymes in the skin, they are even produced in the body by breakdown of amino acids. They are even found in fruits and vegetables if a person wanted to avoid parabens, they'd have to stop eating those fruits and vegetables which contain them. So I feel like if you are trying to 100% avoid parabens, its stupid. If its gonna get removed from the body and its even found in what you eat, there's no reason to avoid it unless you actually have any other problems with it which is a rare occurrence. The amount its used in products is super low, its not enough to really cause an issue, so even if you have multiple products with parabens or sources of them, you'd have to have them in a humongous amount to actually show some sort of effect. They really are super effective as a preservative and one of the most researched one as well.

I can’t put vitamin c on my face due to irritation from rosacea so I use a green tea antioxidant with reservatrol. It’s from Dr. Bailey’s line and it is expensive but it’s the only one I can tolerate. It’s reduced the redness and melasma but then I also put a gram of sulfur crystals in my coffee and take it with grape seed extract, oral vitamin c capsule and 50mg of vitamin e too. In five months my bright red face is now a light pink. I tried the prescription stuff for rosacea for a year and it didn’t help.

Loooved the take on non-chemical. Bravo!!! And I understand the dilema small brands face with parabens. Your take on it seems very reasonable to me. I do however have a slightly different take on the scent issue. Yes, of course, it's only harmful if your skin is sensitive to fragrance. But I think it can also make the experience less enjoyable. For one, you might just not like it. Fresh have a wonderful cleanser that is cucumber scented. It made me gag every time I used it. I loved the product but couldn't get over the scent and never repurchased it. Also, even if it's a scent you love... if you have a cucumber scented wash, a rose scented moisturiser, a strawberry scented lipoil, a coconut shampoo... and a vanilla perfume, it's pretty overkill. So my guess is, many of us buy some scented products we love to use among non-scented or very lightly scented ones to avoid the tropicana coctail :)

There is a story on the origins of petrolatum relating to men working in the oil industy in the 19. century. They had soar, hurting hands from handeling the the products and biproducs from the crude oil production. The discovered if they applied some of "that stuff over there" it protected their hands, some kind of greasy biproduct. It was noticed and picked up by a chemists at an apothecary. It was quickly named petrolatum. They refined the product and became the standard for all kinds of medicinal salves an ointments. By the 1920s and 30s there were all kinds of cosmetic creams based on this like Nivea, Elizabeth Arden, and they all originated from chemists with the knowledge of making an emusified combination of water and petrolatum. I don't know exactly when the first cons agains these appeared, but there have always been very good alternatives to these. I think Weleda and Erno Laszlo creams usually were based on plant oils, waxes and lanolin.
