They have that emotional connection and get married, but don't realize that love is an action, so eventually their emotions change, and they "fall out of love", so they get divorced. Whether you are Christian or not, the best summation of what love is comes from the bible 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Any relationship, and I mean literally any relationship, will work out, if you assume love is an action, use the above definition, and both parties make active effort to follow it.

In the context of the kind of marriage established in the Garden of Eden, the bond between husband and wife, it's a wonderful definition. But in the context of the Last Supper, it's the wrong type of love that is being read into John 13:23. Based on the whole of the Gospel of John, the more accurate love being expressed in stanza 23 would be the Philia, the brotherly love Christ had for His disciples, especially John of Patmos.

What he and others like him are doing is specifically using the NIV translation of the Bible that changed part of the verse Numbers 5:27 from "that the water that brings a curse will enter her and become bitter, and her belly will swell, her thigh will rot" to "the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry." So in their warped interpretation because the water is causing a miscarriage, that equals killing the baby if the mother was unfaithful, thus abortion.

I always saw it as John being incredibly passionate and fiercely devoted. He stayed when the others left and was there for the whole crucifixion and was the one given the honor of being told by Jesus to care for Mother Mary as if he were her son.
