A wonderful performance. Monteux was excellent at molding phrases, making lines soar and achieving coherent performances.

This performance is even better than that by Ansermet with l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande-naturally, because the Boston Symphony was streets ahead of l'OSR in proficiency. (Not that the strings and winds in the latter orchestra aren't fine, but they are simply outclassed by the Boston SO in nearly all instances.) Monteux was a discriminating, superb conductor with a lot of class and finesse in interpretation and insight. I would always give Monteux/Boston the nod against any other conductor & orchestra in much of the French literature, Tchaikovsky, and even Beethoven, Brahms. Listen for inner voices and superb balances throughout; and, enjoy!

This is acoustically brighter and clearer than most modern recordings I’ve listened to!

What clarity of textures! This performance possesses a good deal more tensile strength than most others. Hoomeyow!!

I trust this interpretation because Monteaux had actually met Debussy and understood his intentions as far as phrasing and technique goes. Beautiful piece of history..

8:05 Here they get the dramatic pause PERFECT! 👌 It’s surprisingly rare for orchestras to execute this key section so well.

One of a handful of the greatest LA MERs ever recorded, in splendid sound; thank you for uploading this! The flip side of RCA LM-1939 was a great performance of the Debussy Nocturnes; could you also share that? RCA Victrola issued it later in stereo, too.

Monteux knew Debussy. Right?

4:00 The tremolo on those violas is insane. Every time I listen to this recording it sounds better.
