I think one huge difference between the PWHL fans and NHL fans is that, from what I can tell, we all care a lot more about these players. And how, who they are as PEOPLE. We’re not just here for our own entertainment. We’re invested in this league, and we love to learn and get to know who they are off the ice. We also don’t share the same insane biases where fans of the team, in this case Minnesota, will argue how “psh it’s a clean hit.” NOBODY wants this in the game. I hope the league recognizes this and there is supplemental discipline announced.

Agreed. As a small league that was just recently able to provide benefits for its players, it feels much more relatable than millionaires in the NHL with massive team infrastructures that cater to their every need. The injuries hurt the same but these players don't have the same protections in place as the NHL yet.

It wasn't a clean hit, but it was a valid play, and that's a distinction that you have to keep in mind. Sometimes plays go sideways in a full-contact sport because bodies do fucked-up things at high speed, and you just have to give the call that makes sense given the objective evidence in front of you, even if the vibes in the arena hate it. It would have been the wrong call to give Flaherty a bigger penalty than you could support by the evidence on video because the vibes in the arena wanted her to serve a major or be ejected.

Someone have those officials go through recertification because a lot of the calls tonight were absurd. They handed the Frost so many powerplays on soft calls, and then a player wholesale gets brained by another player causing a dangerous whiplash of the neck and twist and that's a minor?? Because she "hit her own head with her own stick" ? I mean even the NHL would have called this a major and 90% a game misconduct with review by player safety with possible suspension. I wish Fratkin had been there. When another team goons on you, you hit back. Put her on contract for 1 day the next time the Fleet play against the Frost just for the purpose of pulling up Flaherty's number and evening the score. Literally the ONLY time i'll ever advocate for a fight in the PWHL, is when there's an egregious failing of officiating resulting in injury. I'm not saying we should injure Flaherty back, btw. Eye for an eye and the world is blind, and all of that. HOWEVER. Fights exist in hockey for a reason and that's this exact situation.

@@thecaffeinequeen Oh aye Kaleigh would have gone straight for Flaherty there is no doubt about that. There would have been a reckoning.

"I'm not saying we should injure Flaherty back, btw." Nah, you are. Own it. You're saying you want to bring back a retired player for one game so she can lay a dirty hit on a player that you're angry at without worry about damaging the team afterward.
@thecaffeinequeen

@ you misunderstand. A fight is not a dirty hit. Hockey fights have rules and end when a player is on the ice. At no point did I say for her to make a dirty hit, and I specifically said “hockey fights exist for a reason and it’s this exact situation.” A bloody nose is not a broken bone or a broken neck, which is what might have happened to Muller.

@@katherineberger6329 can’t seem to tag you? Either preemptively blocked or a YT thing. In any case I would NEVER advocate for injuring. I knew someone who was paralyze from a hit like this, she lost her future in hockey so I’m actually pissed that you would assume that’s what you meant. But misunderstandings happen so I’m trying to keep level and keep my personal history out of the picture here

Oh, I really don't know about that penalty call. I feel like saying it was Muller's own stick that upper-cut her ignores the fact that it was sent on that trajectory by the penalty elbow. It doesn't seem like a mitigating circumstance? Like, sure Flaherty wasn't aiming for the head. But she set off a head-hitting chain reaction by throwing an elbow. If you trip someone and they go down and get concussed, you wouldn't call it a minor for tripping because it was the player's helmet that hit the ice, would you? I'll let it go if Muller is fine, but that call really feels wrong. My jaw dropped when they announced it.

I am susprised Birchy [ Kessel ] did not blow her top at that hit, she must have mellowed since her playing days 😂 If she had still been playing and someone did that to any of her team mates that would certainly have set her off. I hope and trust that there is a suspension incoming. That was deliberate. You cannot let players off with that sort of shite or else the floodgates open.

That explaination from the league officials is... painful. HOW DID HER OWN STICK HAPPEN TO HIT HER IN HER HEAD, PWHL OFFICIALS??? HMMM??? I hope Müller recovers well.

Like we’re not talking about high sticking, we’re talking about an arm/elbow hit to the head! That has no relevance here. That is insane reasoning smh 🤦‍♀️

They replayed it many times from many angles. Flaherty's body never hit Muller's head - Muller's stick bounced off of Flaherty's pads and hit her in the head. Is it a shitty hit? Yes. Did Flaherty deserve a couple minutes in the bin for taking a bad angle to Muller? Yes. But if you start throwing majors and suspensions on nothing more than vibes, you're going to strangle the league before it has a chance to take hold.

This audio is atrocious - is that an industrial fan in the background?

The volume is too low for the mics and reporters so they cranked the audio up, makes all the ambient noise sound like a jet warming up.
