In Sydney, Australia, I met many friendly Indo-Chinese, they all dressed and looked like Chinese, but they can only speak Indonesian and English, the result of Indonesia’s dark past, quite sad really.

That's the wrong thing because local people have lost their identity, everyone has to speak Indonesian except at home. Sundanese and Javanese people are no longer allowed to use their script and political people will criticize it, this is not only felt by Chinese people. Those most responsible for this incident are the Betawi ethnic people who live in the Jakarta area. In the past it belonged to the Sundanese people but they fought against it. You can see that the Baduy tribe is still traumatized to this day, they live in parts of the forest near Jakarta. You can check in this App, they're originally sundanese.. This Betawi ethnic group has a radical Islamic culture but they live in the country's capital. So it must be understood that not all ethnic groups in Indonesia took part in the 1998 tragedy.
Ur friend from Java then. If u friend from Borneo or Sumatera they will can speak mother language (Hokkien, Cantonese etc but NOT MANDARIN bcz Mandarin is not their mother language)
Even that time in Singapore, many people were shocked by the event in Indonesia. Many Chinese Indonesian also started moving over to Singapore as they were very shaken by the situation then.

It worries me as a minority living in the West. Does multiculturalism really work or is it complete chaos. The Indonesian Chinese were some of the wealthiest people in Asia back in the early 1900s from trading natural resources.
As a Chinese Indonesian, this only happened in one city in Indonesia, not all regions in Indonesia, so not all Chinese people were treated badly, this was all caused by,It was the Dutch colonialists who first started the massacre of Chinese Indonesians, and not all Indonesians were guilty, this only happened to paid people.

I'm a Chinese Indonesian and one important thing to note is that this tragedy took place only in a handful of cities, most notably the capital (Jakarta). I live in Bandung, 160km from Jakarta, and there was hardly anything happened at that time. Life just went on practically as usual in Bandung while Jakarta was on fire.
@@long7402 People often paint a whole country with such a broad stroke, such as China, Indonesia, and many others based on some isolated events that happen in a particular place in said countries. There are some indications that the 1998 tragedy/incident in Jakarta ("Indonesia") was instigated by some people. There are indeed some long standing tensions between Chinese Indonesians and other Indonesian people, but it wildly varies from place to place since Indonesia is such a huge country. EDIT: Another example I want to add is that some people know Indonesia is under Sharia law, but it only happens in Aceh, one out the 38 provinces. That province got a special administration privilege for a reason.
@@ovox790 I do think we should know Chinese, but Chinese culture was repressed under the old regime (it was basically a dictatorship under the guise of managed democracy) which culminated in this 1998 Jakarta riot tragedy before it was brought down. Hence a huge part of Chinese Indonesians can no longer speak Chinese.

I am an Indonesian, a genZ to be exact, and what happened in 1998 is really saddening me. It’s a very shameful history. But I don’t want to forget it. My condolences on those who were afftected. Compared to 1998, the situation these days has improved a lot. But I am not saying that there’s no racism at all, there are still ignorant people living out there and minorities ethnic including tionghoa and some other ethnicities probably are still experiencing it.

I actually think this DW film itself does a terrible job of remembering the history ironically - how and why did these anti-Chinese riot, and who allowed it to continue so long? Why did it happen in some cities and not others? There are theories for example that these anti-Chinese riots were instigated by military and security forces as a method of restoring control when anti-Suharto demonstrations were getting out of control - perhaps it would make sense to contextualise what had happened (at least talk about the broader situation and that this has happened in the larger social context and upheaval against Suharto! as opposed to referring it just as anti-Chinese protests) before asking Chinese Indonesians what they remembered of the violence then?

If not because of 1998, the Indonesia Chinese might act kiasu, loves to play victim like kiasu Malaysian Chinese. 1998 tragic came due to the Chinese community attitudes itself, like how Jewish try to act haughty in German, and act karen towards the locals Germany way back before Nazis exist. They the one who put shit on other locals face, act shit, then suddenly try to act shocked why the locals start to riot. They really need to reflect their own selves attitudes, especially their community.
Indonesia have rapidly change since that era, Confucianism is now being recognized as one of the official religion, any discriminatory law against Chinese Indonesian had already being revoked and chinese Indonesian is equal in law to any other Indonesian. It should also being mentioned that all Indonesian today look at this page of history with heavy sense of regret, no one celebrate it, and Indonesia's new generation have no anti china sentiment. It should also being mentioned that current Indonesia-China relationship is also very excellent
