You missed a couple of gameplay features that make it much less frustrating. First, if you continuously (and rapidly) tap the jump button while in the air you can slow down Chuck’s descent. Second, if you land directly on top of those springy poles from above, they give you a health bonus, and you can do that until all the pole segments have turned from red to white.

This was a really interesting one; it follows the basic mechanics of Kid Kool and Psycho Fox (which were almost the exact same game, but for different consoles, and with slight gameplay differences, but the same levels) and throws on a coat of horror paint. On top of that, the Japanese version (Magical Hat... something something; I know Daibouken is in there) is bright, colorful, and is based on... I think it's a comic they have over there. Of course, they changed this because they didn't want to pay the international licensing fees for something none of us had ever heard of, but they went SO HARD with this one; I love it.

Decap Attack is a heavily modified version of a japanese game... I believe the name of the title is Super Turbo Magical Hat Adventure or something like that. Its a licensed manga/anime game, so it got a spooky makeover in the west for copyright and marketing reasons - the cutesy enemies are leftovers as a lot of sprites remained untouched between versions. Also, the japanese version is considered easier than the western one, but the gameplay is largerly the same between the two. Also of note is that Decap Attack/Magical Hat is also a successor for similar games that came before, like Kid Kool for the NES and Psycho Fox for the Master System (funnily enough Psycho Fox received a similar treatment when coming to Brazil, turning into Sapo Xulé).

sooooooooooo... I looked around, for I commented largely just by what I remembered... they actually changed a lot for Decap Attack from Magical Hat no Buttobi Tabo! Daibōken. The enemies were a lot more cuter, also the bosses felt way to easier.

It is based on the “Magical Hat” anime; I think Erin should play that game and use like the Sega Genesis 32X adaptor, in order to play it.

The enemies don't make sense because in the original Japanese version Magical Hat the protagonist is a little guy with a turban instead of a mummy... For some reason the developers changed the sprite in the US release

In a 2014 video of the YT channel Game Sack called "Regional Differences" they explains that the Japanese version is based on an anime series. They explain that both of the versions are based on the Master System game "Psycho Fox", that is also based on "Kid Kool" for the NES. All of these games were developed by Vic Tokai. The AVGN explained that in his 2012 video of Kid Kool, too.

I think I was the only one in my circles of friends who even knew about this game back around when it released, much less owned a copy. I used to play this game quite a bit just because I loved the aesthetic and some of the music (especially the track that plays during the stage when you get chased by the instakill monster). One of many rather unique games of the era that will never be forgotten. Thanks for the upload Erin, and awesome early Halloween costume! Missed opportunity on having a throwable skull though. :)

A funny story about this game: in Japan, it's actually a licensed game based on an anime called Magical Hat. I guess to Westernize it, they felt they had to make something edgier and cooler to fit with the Genesis's "edgy" marketing here in the US.

Good to see this one. I remember seeing advertising for this game back when it was new, but the cartoon-horror vibe wasn't my thing so it was a game I didn't play back then. I didn't know anyone who had it either. From what I saw, it looked pretty average. Fast forward many years and I got a collection of Genesis games so I gave it a try since it was included. The low expectations probably helped, but I was pleasantly surprised and thought it was pretty good. It really surprised me. The music was a big part of that. It was a cool one to discover. I had a similar reaction to Bio-Hazard Battle in that same context. I listened to the video more than I watched, but whenever I glanced over so I may have just missed it, but I didn't see Erin use the slow descent. Just like Mario 3(when Mario has a tail), if you hit jump while in the air, you can slow your descent which could help with making jumps.

Decap Attack is a great game. I 100% it on the genesis classics collection. The soundtrack is SO GOOD too! One of the most underrated OSTs of the 16 bit era.

This is such a fun game to play, though the later levels are brutally difficult. The first time I beat it, I used cheat codes and the game doesn't show the ending when you cheat so I had to beat it legitimately. Those ledges that are almost invisible except when you use a composite video output. The blending makes them more pronounced, but you lose that with s-video, component, and rgb.

This is my favourite Sega Genesis game, the music is really awesome to listen to. I’m always playing this game and beating all the levels always the way up to the very last and final boss. By far the greatest game ever. Really wonderful gameplay of this game, great video as always keep up the amazing work. OMG, thank you! I had this as a child and LOVED it, but had completely forgotten it. Amazing what decades can do to one's memory. This game wasn't all that innovative, but it took a tried and true game type, platforming adventure in the vein of Super Mario Bros, Mega Man, Sonic, etc, and threw on a coat of spooky paint with some fun and unique mechanics like the head toss. I appreciate you covering it for spooky season and it was great recalling those bits of childhood.

When you lose a life it plays a little funeral march, I didn't like it 'cause back then it creeped me out. I used to get frustrated a lot in the lava parts, which required you to make very long jumps to get through the level. The soundtrack still rocks! ♥ Have a nice day Erin 😎🇧🇷

I dont know the artists name but that face that bursts out of his chest with the bulging eyes looks like the type of drawings I use to see in the 80s and 90s. They used the same design for the mutants in the movie, Freaked! I wonder if that was intended for the re-skinning of the sprites for western audiences. Also, love the mummy costume.

Pretty sure this game was a reskin from another game outta Japan and that's why there are a few "odd" choices. Though they did one hell of a job at reskin and it's an awesome game. And you can use the items on the bosses....just most aren't as effective as you'd want them to be.
