i remember in high school we had to read an article that explained that giving money and food to homeless people doesn’t help in the long run because all you’re doing is helping them to survive on the street. you have to refer them to a shelter or an organisation that is dedicated to getting them off the street and back to society. but judging by l the responses when i suggest that, maybe a lot of them prefer to be on the street.🥺💔

@@marleneclough3173 Our rents are not high, you are crazy. Most 1st world parts you pay close to 50% of your post tax income on rent for an average person, in SA that is not even close that. I pay 5% of my income to rent for a 2 bedroom apartment, where as if I lived in a 1st world country like UK, singapore, US, netherlands etc, rents would be 7-10 times the rent for the same space.

It’s not leadership that’s the problem…….. it’s people, it’s not being able to pay rent/food/health. It’s the decision to move to areas where they perceive things are better and when they get there they find that what they perceived was already taken and there was nothing left for them. Their only option is - keep moving on - live in your car - buy a tent and join the other hopefuls. When poverty walks in the door - love flies out the window. GBV alcohol drugs are another reason people up and go.

What I have picked up in the video is that the people living in the area are reclaimers “waste pickers”, drug addicts, and old people. Here is what I think since reclaimers are helping in a way of collecting reusable resources, the community should pay them some money to clean the area all the time since they are not well paid in that case this will encourage others who are unemployed to work as reclaimers and find better places to live than occupying urban spaces. Secondly, the drug addicts, this one is a very tough one but some addicts are not there willingly, maybe if the NGOs can come in and help those who want to recover by taking them to rehabilitation facilities reducing the number of addicts in the area, and since I saw a building that looks like it is abandoned it could be turned into a home where churches go to to feed the homeless and where they live. Lastly, old people could be taken to old age homes with the help from the government and the law should not negotiate with the dwellers when such measures are being taken because it is unacceptable to see such beautiful spaces turning into dumping sites and being degraded.

I like the street people program city of cape Town have been running...it benefits the homeless but unfortunately they're so use to the street life they cant see themselves living any other way and refuse every bit of help that isn't money. I only feel for the innocent kids having to be raised on the street because of the choices their parent's made

Heidelberg GP sits with the same problem. Because it us in such close proximity to JHB and it is still a "small town", homeless people stream here. I have a shelter accommodating 68 homeless people and we are constantly full. To those we can not help with accommodation, we have donated 104000 meals in 2023. Massive problem and getting worse..

This is heartbreak 💔 all we can do is to pray that someday things change. I understand a child who lost the parents and don't know the relatives if they stay in the street but others i really don't understand. You find very young people on street and old people. If you are born in SA you have rural area home why not go back if things are not working out. All those people staying in informal settlements in December they go home why dont you do so if things don't work. I would really like to understand their mindset because you can't put measures in place if you understand people's mindset. Not all us we meant to be rich or live in cities. You can live a functional life in rural areas. This is really disappointing. These politicians are really annoying not even one party deserve my vote even worse ANC. This issue should be a priority.

Thats the thing, giving homeless people free meals is not the solution bcs there are other problems that come with that. Great that one receives a meal and kept from being hungry for that day but empowering them is the key

Problem starts from the Border where we have many illegal immigrants coming to SA and currently SA has high unemployment so where do we expect this people to stay coming from foreign countries illegally and they are not working or earing less wage with many children obviously they will go for open spaces and put shacks, police move them and they go the next space and those who stays in suburbs close to these shacks will suffer. Truth needs to be told with these sharks and people sleeping in the parks it's mostly people who came illegally from foreign countries and our ANC is responsible for that

So sad this country has so much potential but it is being dragged into the ground😢 This country needs a government that truly cares, that is not corrupt, greedy and full of false promises....I see no future, but I still pray for hope for this country. Where are the jobs that the government are creating.... ? Ones that are non-corrupt positions and stable secure positions. There are many factors that play a role in joblessness but I truly feel that some factors play a bigger role than others like the government..... Some people turn to drugs as a way to cope with their situation thus one should focus on the main root causes.....

Job creation is the only way to curb homelessness, even if it means providing jobs in the informal sector. Jhb has many slum areas where homeless individuals can provide a service. But...the city will also have to provide low cost housing to shelter those that earn minimal wage.
