I got known Ryuichi Sakamoto was dead just a few minutes ago. It is very sad, but his works have been impressing many people and he will influence a lot of future artists. What we can do is remembering his name and music to tell future generations how he is great. From Japan. R.I.P. Your music will live in our hearts forever.

My name is Lawrence. I discovered this song when I was 13 years old and being bullied very badly at school and by my father at home. I’m now 30 and still listen to it. It tells the story of my life. Small and feeble at the start, but growing more confident and defiant on my life, not giving up

It took me over 15 years to find this piece. I heard it one single time in my whole life and the main melody I could never forget It wracked my brain for so long that I began to think I made it up. By sheer chance i heard it once again while at home when it just happened to be playing 15 years of waiting to come across it one more time. Every second was worth the wait

I wanna share a little story under this beautiful song. When I was in high school , there was a cute boy that I liked. He was quite shy I’d say. He didn’t talk much. But we shared same classes , and he was even my desk mate in some of them.I was always the one to start a conversation, but he was always the one who ended it . And this one time he had earphones on so I asked him what he was listening. He told me it was just some melody , and for the first time he asked me something. He asked if I wanted to listen to it. And I did . I didn’t really liked it at the time but I lied saying it was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard . We talked and talked and at the end I finally had a courage to ask his number , I said I wanted the link and if he was fine with sending it to me (I don’t even know why I said that lame excuse) he just smiled and said yes. After a while we started messaging to each other everyday and we became serious after 3 months. We have dated for 3 years and this one time he took me to a restaurant and he went to go to the bathroom. And suddenly I heard this song playing , I recognised the song right away. Looked back ,there he was playing the piano( he had 0 experience with piano so I was indeed shocked) (it wasn’t the perfect performance but for me it was amazing) that’s when he asked to marry me . I cried like a b . (Just so you know neither of us really liked this ,it just happened to be in one of his playlist. I thought it was his favourite melody since he was messaging me about it non stop and he thought I liked it since I always responded. But now it is indeed our favourite melody )

I watched his documentary where he met with Ryichi in his apartment in Tokyo and they played this song together on the piano and I was crying, knowing that by the time this documentary came out he had already passed makes it so much more special and poignant. I am glad to have discovered his music, its beautiful 😌

My dad died back in 2021. For his funeral I requested that this song to be played at it. He had never watched the movie and never heard the soundtrack, but to me it felt reflective in the sense you could listen to it and think about both the good times and the bad times of either your own life, or of someone you know. This may not be the correct way to interpret this piece, but it's what I think of it whenever I come back to listen to it. Than you Ryuichi Sakamoto for you musical talents, rest in peace.

When I was going through a rough time in my life, I would listen to this song all the time. I’ll never forget a moment I had when I was particularly sad, when I walked down to the local gas station around midnight and the cashier was listening to this song. He seemed sullen and sad as well, and as I put my food on the counter for him to scan, I said, “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, I love that song.” His whole demeanor changed and he said, “I didn’t expect anyone coming in here tonight to recognize this.” We made small conversation after that, and we were both smiling as I left the store.

This is one of the most beautiful songs my husband and I have ever heard. Five years ago when our son was born three months early, we would play this song to him in his isolette crib in NICU. He loved to hear our voices and he loved hearing music. Although tiny, he was a strong baby, and after many long months, a lot of equipment, medication and caring he made a recovery. He is a very happy, inquisitive, loving and fun little boy now, and he will start school in about a week.

I can say for a fact that playing the piano feels something like meditation, after practicing playing a song the muscles in your hands will get used to the keys. As a result most of the time when I play piano I'm normally thinking about hitting the right keys or not screwing up, but I also feel very relaxed. Maybe it's just me, but playing Piano is like a kind of Zen, you aren't really thinking about anything besides the sound of the music.

For me, I feel like it’s a winter night sitting by the fireplace in your comfortable napping rocking chair. Or just reading a book, maybe even drawing, studying. Anything. You hear the fire crackles and you see the night outside the window full of snowflakes slowly drifting in the calm wind. You smell the cedar wood, burning fire place, and cup of coffee or maybe even pumpkin spice. And it just continues on into the deep night.

The song that introduced me to him. I learned about him passing away when one of my favorite korean rapper/producer sent his message that his teacher Sakamoto-sama already departed. Then saw Sakamoto-sama name as the piano performer in one of his songs (Snooze by Agust D ft. Woosung) & had a appearance to his documentary before he passed away a year after its recording. I know everyone who is a fan of Sakamoto-sama is devastated about this news. I hope his music will stay strong in the hearts of many.

The past few weeks I have been feeling off - the intense anger I have when I was growing up was back sitting on my chest and I could not pinpoint where it was coming from. This song along with On The Nature Of Daylight (Max Richter), S.T.A.Y. (Hans Zimmer) and I Am the Antichrist to You (Nu Deco Ensemble & Kishi Bashi) have been my rotation to soothe my soul. Last night, while I was listening to my playlist, I came to realize where the anger was coming from - it was because I will be visiting home. And there are realities at home that I have not accepted yet and so the anger was a mask for my agony. When I go home, I will see the heavy weight my mother has to carry for being a caretaker of my father, a man who never treated her well. He suffered a stroke years back and became half paralyzed. Since then, my mother has been sacrificing to tend to his needs. Two months ago, his health has worsened. Now, he is bed ridden and is no longer mobile. I'll be seeing my mother doing 10x more sacrifice. I'll see her tired, barely sleeping. And I am afraid to look at my mother's pale and scrawny face - and notice the lines, wrinkles and visible stress creeping in. As my cousin told me a week ago that he was not able to recognize my mom because she lost weight and aged a lot (must be from the burden she is carrying). A moment ago, I was about to pack my things since in 9 hours I'll be hopping on the plane on my way home - but out of nowhere I decided to open Facebook which I only do once in a couple of months (I guess this is my self's resistance to going home) and the first post I saw was about Ryuichi Sakamoto's passing. I quickly jumped to Google to confirm the heartbreaking news and next thing I know here I am writing this comment. This is the first time I am leaving such a comment on KZbin, sharing a personal piece of myself to a bunch of strangers on the internet (I know it's messy and all over the place). But why am I doing this? Because this song is close to my heart. I grew up with a lot of anger hidden inside of me - in fact, I was good at hiding it that nobody could tell that. People would just describe as a someone with a stoic and serious expression. The first time I heard this song, it helped me come into terms with the anger inside of me - this song helped me welcome it, sit with it and accept it. For the first time in my life I was at peace with the anger inside me. This song was there by my side when I stared at the walls and the ceiling for hours with the wave of emotions inside of me. This song has accompanied me to many nights where I cried myself to sleep. This song helped me cried - because I needed to cry. Cry my heart out because of anger, because of anguish, because of grief. And because I cried my heart out, the load inside my chest lessened. This song did not only helped me lament the realities of life. But this song helped me carry on and move forward. This song is forever etched in my soul. Thank you Mr. Sakamoto for your music. It lives on with me. 11/13/2023: To anyone who took the time to read this long post, I left a comment below and shared something I learned. I hope it will be worth your time and attention. // I

Sakamoto once said that he has spent the last half century wondering “What is music?” I don’t know if he ever found a satisfactory answer, but there can be no doubt that the thing to which he devoted his life was music- music that tells stories, music that touches hearts, music that both hides the artist and strips him bare before the world.
