We ended up seeing it when I visited and to our surprise, it was the Sub version, not the English dubbed version. But she still enjoyed it, and was able to get what was going on. I mean she picked up who the fire girl was WAY quicker than I ever did which is embarrassing to say as a major film buff. Just goes to show that animations even those from another country really can connect to anyone. If you're open to what you see. Just to make it clearer how much a primer is important, 2 separate other friend groups with similar tastes went to see The Boy & the Heron after I had. I didn't give the first one anything other than "I loved it" and they came out confused and mislead. I told the 2nd more about the tone and dream-logic of its plotting and they enjoyed it way way more. It's a powerful choice they made, but if your conception of Ghibli is closer to Totoro and Howl and Kiki (NONE of them have seen The Wind Rises, my favourite Miyazaki) or if you're just game for anything (like I was, even during Ghiblifest I would make sure to come late so I'd miss the trailers for The Boy & the Heron), then this is going to be a massive readjustment.

The biggest problem with Wish is really just that that, We don't care about Asha. There's not enough weight put on how wishes are important to people, and when Asha's wish is never even shown, we can only assume her dream is to fulfill others wishes. Which is really vague and hard to care about when we don't even see a lot of the supporting cast's wishes. I'm am genuinely sure that a lot of the films other aspects wouldn't be nearly as overplayed as "bad", if we actually cared about the story and it's characters. And that's a writing problem more than anything else.

While Miyazaki seems to be know for having strong female protagonists in his films, like the titular Nausicaä, Kiki and Chihiro, he has made lots of stories with male main protagonists. Lupin III and Sherlock Hound aside, he directed Future Boy, Conan which practically set the bases for his stories about a boy and a girl, I mean Conan and Lana are very similar to Pazu and Sheeta from Castle in the Sky, and other characters in his stories are similar to them. There's also Porco Rosso. You could say Ashitaka is the main character in Princess Mononoke (heck, the movie was called "The Legend of Ashitaka" in pre-production). And The Wind Rises focuses on Jirō

And I really like the villain. The chef is t really anything special. He don’t talk (except the exclamations he makes) but that actually isn’t really an issue because he still serves as a good threat for our duck characters. And his intro is so cool. Him walking down the kitchen with all his workers intimidated to where he swats away a dish because he doesn’t like it, that’s how you do a villain intro! But yeah. Rocky wasn’t an idiot in the first film, but now he is for the sake of jokes. I’m really tired of this lazy writing practice of writing jokes first and then arranging characters to fit the joke or situation. I still need to see Boy and the Heron again (and subbed) to really get a fix on its meaning, but it's fantastically animated and had a number of WTF moments that shocked the friends I saw the movie with.

Fun Fact: Rocky and Ginger was my very first ship. So happy my first ship got married and had a baby together ❤❤

I think the best animated thing I've seen this year is actually the series 'Scavenger's Reign', I REALLY hope you're able to watch it and let others know what a masterpiece it is.

I ended my year of films with The Boy and the Heron and I was shocked at Robert Patterson as The Heron where he sounds like a mix of Daffy Duck and Danny DeVito

Chicken run 2 is literally just little mermaid 2, where the mother decides not to tell the child about the danger for no reason. Resulting in the daughter just repeating the same thing the mother did.

4:00 No hot take for me. I mean, Chicken Run's been read as a communist allegory, that's a level of thematic sophistication greater than Wallace and Gromit for me (still excited for the upcoming W+G movie!). In any case, Ima see TBATH with a friend, who's quite the Miyazaki fan. I probably won't get all the references, but it'll be fun to see another hand-drawn animated feature in theaters again (my first was Princess Mononoke this summer). Edit: I am now confused and amazed. In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have seen Miyazaki's most self-reflective and narratively ambiguous film as my second Ghibli film.

I’m so mad people aren’t giving Despicable me 1 enough credit cause it is genuinely a great movie on par with an 8/10 Dreamworks or Pixar movie. Every scene matters, all the plot beats hit and the characters are very endearing yes even the Minions IN THAT MOVIE ONLY! It makes me so mad that people say that Mario and Migration are better when they lack the strong 3 act structure that worked so great for the first Despicable me

Your Chicken Run 2 commentary about the mom keeping the daughter in the dark and driving her to leave reminds me of the reason I most resent the Mortal Engines movie - we'll never see a sequel movie covering book 3, Infernal Devices, which explores the fallout (with a big sci-fi adventure) of a similar mother-daughter relationship.

Migration not having a useless B plot line makes it one of Illumination's better movies imo

I finally watched boy and heron, and jumped to this video to watch your thoughts. Because my thoughts were: it's visually stunning butwhat the heck did i just watch?

Migration was a huge suprise It's one of the first illumination films that felt like it was actuallyna film And not a corproate tied hand job like the Seuss movies And a giant toy commerical like minnions It's good animation, with interesting characters, the pacing is really good The plot is tight and it doesn't need to have long pandering pop culture scenes or noise going on to pad the run time Every plot point and scene is connected and has a purpose that pushes the film further. I mean, to me, that is the best thijg about Migration It feels like a real film, it has characters you care about And it doesn't fall into the usual illumination or dec-jan movie feel.
