I think introducing a new character late in the series lifespan would be a sign of jumping the shark in an attempt to stay relevant. I mean, in Murder By Death, Lionel Twain once surprised the five detectives by revealing he was never killed, and mentioned they introduced surprise characters in the last five pages who were never in the book before!
