Peter Ebdon is basically the more modern version of The Grinder Cliff Thorburn. He never got stick for his play style but Ebdon got grief because he was different. You have to say fair play to him. You don't win a worlds beating Stephen hendry without being bloody good

@iansimpson279 ай бұрын
@@alindumitrache6008 It's true - it happened in the 2005 world quarter-final between Peter Ebdon and Ronnie O'Sullivan. Peter slowed things down and made really sure to get himself back into the match, but took it to too much of an extreme, and at 10-9 he took five and a half minutes over a break of 12. He was never that slow in the 2002 WSC though.

I rooted for Hendry but to be honest Ebdon's mental fortitude in that tournament was astonishing. Besides, even though in great shape, Hendry was trailing for most of the final. This is arguably his worst loss ( he never recovered from it - that white ball pocketing is almost as bad as Jimmy White's famous black ball miss - ) but at the same time one of the greatest underdog victories of all time.
@iansimpson279 ай бұрын
Hendry said afterwards that after overcoming Ronnie O'Sullivan and Ken Doherty in very high quality matches, he took it for granted that he would beat Peter Ebdon in the final, so it was psychologically difficult when Peter turned out to be much stronger than in 1996. Ebdon could sometimes be painfully slow but in the 2002 WSC he adopted a very attacking approach and often averaged nearer 25 seconds per shot rather than 30-35. I think Ebdon was a very worthy champion that year, although at the time I was rooting primarily for Hendry, and I still feel at many levels that it's a shame he didn't win after playing so brilliantly in his earlier matches.
@MrGloryglorymanutd182 жыл бұрын
So because of ebdon and Selby hendry and O'Sullivan have 7 instead of 8 world titles but O'Sullivan got his revenge by beating Selby in the 2020 World Semi with Wilson waiting for the winner in the final.but poor Hendry never got the chance to play ebdon in the crusible again but let's not forget ebdon was the one getting revenge here because Hendry beat him in the 1996 final.

@@hystericalwolf I disagree. Selby didnt “ruin” Ronnie’s record because he rightfully took it off him and won fair and square. That was never Ronnie’s record to begin with- whereas Ebdon clearly ruined hendry’s because Ebdon never really deserved that. Maybe 1/10 matches Ebdon beats Hendry, and that’s generous. @@konepe1653 , what are these 'lots of cases' of players winning frames when needing four snookers? From memory, I can count on one hand the times I've seen that in any snooker match over the past 40 years. Hendry never tended to play on if he needed more than a couple of snookers in any case, but looking at the reds and the rest of the table here, it was never going to happen if he'd lumbered on for a little longer.
