Most pans in palettes aren't magnetic anyway, so I'm not sure if it's really a helpful advice. The only question someone should be asking about whether to depot, is whether you are willing to continue doing so because it's a difficult task, and there's a good chance your eyeshadows will break and you'll have to repress them. You also need to get some magnetic palettes for storage if you don't plan on keeping the original packaging. If you don't want to go through all that, then simply don't depot.

Very interesting video Kendra, thank you! When I depotted my too faced pumpkin spice palette last year I ended up destroying (and repressing) all the mattes 🙈. I removed the plastic tray but oh boy, that's both snap-fit and glued to the tin package and I made some minor dents while forcing it out... The glue underneath the pans was also pretty tenacious! I didn't have any, but I heard that with plastic or metal package one could use some 99% isopropyl alcohol syringed beneath the pan to melt the glue. Little by little I'm depotting almost all my eyeshadow palettes, next year I want to be able to dupe the new releases with what I have, not for the money, but I want to use what I already own! The only palette I think I won't depot is Blendbunny's Dollhouse, the shades in there don't work for me on their own, I always have to dip my brush in two shades to adjust them to my skin tone and it wouldn't make much sense to depot them!

That's neat to know. Yeah I tried popping out the too faced plastic portions and glad I didn't. Sounds like it was going tonrequire more work than it's worth. I will probably do my Lorac palettes. I have one upcoming but I haven't gotten to the third one bc the first was a bit more cumbersome than I thought. I definitely can dupe the vibes on almost all new releases with what I already own so this will likely be what I trend towards also. Speaking of popping plastic out, the tarte in bloom, and tartlette palettes have a plastic tray that pops right out so if you own any of those 12 pans (other than toasted, those pans are removable on magnetic wells like Colourpops palettes) you can easily pop those out so definitely not everything is like the TF palettes. Good stuff to know though!!!

@@KendraMorgan I forgot to say that with cardboard packaging I always get the messy bottom where the pan was glued, like you did with the Bh palette, but I scrape it with a cutter till it's pretty much leveled so that I can stick the magnetic pieces properly, as I prefer to put the metal stickers on the pans (I find that the magnetic pieces don't always work with magnetic palettes, it depends on the polarity I guess) 😊 I don't have any Tarte palette, but I heard that some are magnetic too, like ND for instance, I wish that everyone did that!!! 😂

Managed to keep the palette intact but I had hit pan on the matte shades so I dint mind repressing them both, they won't come out with out repressing I'm afraid. But I have a slim blade I wedged into one side and they popped right out, glue wasn't strong at all :)

What is the motivation to depot? Like, Why?

Well, (and I realize now I never explained the reasoning) some like to buy the special shades from indie and then supplement from a palette some of the more utilitarian shadows that would be boring to purchase from indie brands. So let's say I depot the too faced sweet peach, I pull a soft beige, a mid tone neutral matte and maybe a shimmer, throw those in a magnetic palette with some special multichromes from devinah or Terra moons and I now have myself a really nice palette with all the shades necessary to create a look!! A lot of the higher end brands use the tin or magnetic responsive pans so this would be helpful to extract what you need and create something very unique.

I depot so that when I travel I can bring along my favorites. I also like to depot because I have an extensive collection of shadows but I only keep a small number of them in my vanity. The rest are in larger palettes sorted in a separate part of my room. I feel like they are safe there, less likely to be dropped or knocked about by my cats when they are testing gravity. I like to duplicate the look of some of the exisiting palettes and so I can pull from different ones and put them together in different combinations. Without depotting I might need 6 or 7 palettes to recreate a look. Too many choices (as in everything out all at once) can lead me to choose nothing because I don't have the time.

I'm watching this video now because I want to depot my BH Blueberry Muffin & Cherry on Top so I can get more use out of my shadows. Over this past year, I've exclusively been applying my makeup in the car, so... I'm not bringing a full eyeshadow palette w/ me - I have a small Z palette w/ a highlighter & a couple single shadows to do a quick look. And it sucks because I absolutely LOOOOOVE those palettes!! So I look forward to depotting them, sticking some magnets on the back, & actually using them as singles from my travel palette.
