On the playgrounds we “randomly” cut our decksin the middle, looked at the level of the bottom card of the top pile, compared, and the higher level could decide who goes first. If both level match we repeat.

I mean it was perfectly normal in our high school club to 'cut to see who goes first" using the ATK or DEF value. Highest wins and spell or trap count as zero. It worked for every duel even our weird 8 v 8 Battle Royale mode.
