I like this map because it's a metaphor for how plain the slow, grueling march of reality is and no matter how much things change, the more they stay the same. It always grounds me back to real life to play this. Love this map.

When I was a kid I loved this map. There was no prior knowledge, no kill or secret count on the hud, playing keyboard only I'm too young to die, and completely pissing my pants. My logic as a kid was that every map was harder than the previous one, so after the horrors of map 1, 2 and 3, expecting a cyberdemon to appear out of nowhere or a teleport ambush of shotgunners gave this map with tall ceilings and laberynthine design a tense atmosphere. Best part is my fears became a reality in map 6, so I always ended up feeling map 4 and 5 were the intro. Even playing this map today I still remember how it felt as a kid, which makes it special in a nostalgic way.

Despite the dull monotony of using the same texture everywhere, I like the thematic consistency of this map, and this idea that it's a sort of indoor fortress of sorts. The windows connecting the different areas, the sort of verticality the map has with separate upper and lower areas, and the various tunnels and crannies that can be found in the pits.. it somehow manages to be memorable to me despite its flaws.
@MrCantStopTheRobot Жыл бұрын
Yeah it fits the idea of Hell as a twisted reflection of things that make sense to us. A fortress guarding nothing, just caverns leading into more caverns. Like the current automated art generators that give people 9 fingers, because it doesn't _really_ appreciate the point or reason for anything.

It’s not my favorite, but I like it simply because it’s not a generic maze. I love Doom maps that have a sense of place or design, like a factory or hanger, as well as the effort to capture that feeling (like the “Haunted Mansion” map you did last Halloween). This feels like the inside of a castle. Sure, it could benefit from a courtyard (like something from E3E1) but it’s okay. I would say this is _relaxing_ and it’s more about sight seeing the map architecture with some monsters to kill while you’re touring Hell’s guest castle.

I really like this map for the following reasons: - it's themed similarly to E3M7 and has the same music, though it's not as ominous, but still pure Thy Flesh Consumed. Custom Doom 3 hell maps also share this theme. - I really like the flow of the blood rivers throughout the entire map and the room interconnection. There's exploration involved when looking for the supercharge and the BFG. It's the first or only Doom 1 map where you see liquid flow instead of being static in isolated pools. - easy map, but not stupid short like E4M4

The esthetics of this map won over my younger self. The temple where blood is flooding constantly was creepy and strange and the weird color of the bricks made it fascinating in many ways. And the starting room, with the sky texture and the menacing cacodemon outside, was a great contrast with the inside. Younger self me did not care about the difficulty of the map...

I like this map because it feels like I'm storming some sort of corrupted fortress or castle, blood coming from the fountains and hellish corruption filling the pits. The window near the stairs is like a glimpse of twisted architecture.

i always think back fondly on this map, i think because of the detail work giving it quite a bit of coherency as a "place" compared to a lot of doom's maps, especially with that adorable blood fountain making way to a river that flows through the map, an early bit of doomcute! it's not great as far as combat goes but it's really not bad either, and honestly i think the worst sin it commits is just being carved entirely out of vividly green marble, if it had more varied texturework so it didn't feel like a fever dream through the aqueduct of an awful moldy castle, it would be a fine map

Hello Decino. I like this map. I am a casual player and have probably only beaten this once or twice, but still. I appreciate it partly BECAUSE it's green marble all over; among the maps of the original Doom games I believe that is quite rare (though I have not played Plutonia or TNT). The main reason why I like it is the spaces, I find them interesting to look at and fun to traverse. I like that there are many rooms with multiple levels, windows to other rooms, ledges and elevated walkways etc. Thank you for all the fine videos! I am really enjoying this Nightmare playthrough, might be fun to see you tackle more maps on Nightmare occasionally =)
