i think one of the cleverest parts of this wad is how it sets itself a constraint (levels must fit within a given box, the size of the building), but then repeatedly breaks it in ways that REALLY enhance the sense of space. the VR level had a separate area that was "virtual"; the time travel level obviously had two areas; the elevator breakdown played with it a bit; roof rage let you go to the rooftops of the surrounding buildings; several of the later levels have a skybox; and now here we are finally, at the very bottom, with a level that's still compact but clearly not confined to the same size any more. makes the entire set really feel like one big coherent space. i don't think there's much else like it.

I gotta say, the moment where you get on the lift and it finally starts going up after everything you've been through, it's just such a powerful moment Before I played it I was told going down was basically the best wad ever and ever since I've played it I've been mad because that's so uncontestable. Like, only thing that came close for me is ancient aliens. Maybe I'd find sunlust better if I actually played it? Either way, going down is one of the few wads (even in the notables) to truly achieve uniqueness of this calibre, and it's maddening
@fluffydestroyer83363 жыл бұрын
something I notice about going down is how cyriak's not afraid to use some lower-powered stuff like zombiemen and green armour. lot of wads seem to have a green armour in the first map and a secret mega armour too. also something cool is how the really powerful stuff like BFGs and megaspheres are only a thing in the later and more intense maps (which also give you a large quantity of weaker enemies to satisfyingly splat with the BFG)
@DinnerForkTongue3 жыл бұрын
IMO BTSX and Eviternity make better use of green armor pickups, but on the monster side, I agree. Mouldy is too good a mapper to stay with the cheap difficult enemies, he uses the whole buffalo.
@MrCantStopTheRobot3 жыл бұрын
Most people seem to think of Doom as a one-way progression, ever-more powerful, ever-larger, ever-more numerous, but it's more like a rhythm of highs and lows when done perfectly. Like breathing. No different from any other medium.

This one was quite an adventure to do with the strategy in my own playthrough. Getting the blue key and activating the blue switch brings in the entire level to fight, but it was rather cathartic to do the level in less than 6 minutes. It's almost weird seeing your more cautious blind approach at this point.

Yep, I had a similar reaction the first time I saw that kill count, Going Down has up until this point been about relatively low enemy counts and suddenly you're hit in the face with a 4 digit one. Also, as much as I've grown to appreciate Cyriak's soundtrack, I can't help to be reminded of Manilla Road's Necropolis. Great tune, if you like 80s metal you should check it out.

As we draw in on the end of Going Down now decino, I do hope you plan to do a few more blind runs but I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that you need to make sure you pick the right WADs for it. The BTSX2 blind run didn't quite work but Going Down was the perfect fit for the format.
@Jobby_James3 жыл бұрын
Comparing this map to Going Down's earlier maps, this has certainly increased in difficulty. With a kill count of 1143 and a large arena with spooky bois and many other of Doom I & II's monsters, this might as well be a map made by Ribbiks. Because with the kill count like that and a large arena, fair use of metal walls and flooring, tons of detail and love put into this fairly small slaughter map, it reminds me of wads like Sunlust. I am amazed that this wad explores a surprising amount of themes considering (in my opinion) its simple narrative and favouring vanilla Doom assets to tell the story. Then again I don't really play slaughter maps as (particularly some) are very daunting and tend to lag on the computers that I typically play Doom on.
@DinnerForkTongue3 жыл бұрын
Nah, this is much easier than Ribbiks's fare. You get disgusting amounts of recovery items and enough invuls to chain together for the whole thick of the map if you rush all the switches and turn the teleport reinforcements into one single mass of infighting violence.

This map is one of the lesser 'gimmicky' levels of the wad. Not that I see that as a problem. On the contrary, Cyriak's ability to create fun slaughter with beautiful visuals is on par with Insane_gazebo in some regards truly shines (although gazebo is still on another level when it comes to micro and macro-detailing). What amazes me about Cyriak is his versatility as a mapper. He shows impressive creativity and every level feels unique. Even the lesser levels aren't really boring, more so that there's better levels in the mapset. I'd say that this is one of the best levelsets ever released for both difficulty junkies as well as the more casual players. My hat's off to you, Cyriak! EDIT removed minor spoilers

Wow, I'm honestly shocked. I guess I shouldn't expect anything else from you, considering how good you've gotten at DOOM, but I was sure this map would be the one that finally gave you trouble. This map is an awesome, thrilling slaughterfest. But quite a manageable one. When I played it, I don't think I died more than just the once. The waves are quite generous and don't go too over the top like maybe Sunlust sometimes does. Its a well balanced map so again, Cyriak, nice work! 👍

One of the cool things about this map that wasn't properly shown in this video is that if you try to cheese some of the encounters by not firing any shots (thus preventing the extra Hell Knight, Revenant, Arachnotron and Cacodemon hordes from awakening and spawning in), you will not be able to obtain any of the Invulnerability spheres but will still have to deal with Cyberdemons and Archviles. This was obviously done to prevent pacifist speedrunners from completely trivializing the whole level, which shows how meticulously playtested it was and how Cyriak seemingly took into account even the most unorthodox player strategies and playstyles.
