I have to say that these videos on filtering, parasite treatment and general fish & pond upkeep have been tremendously educational for me. I have wanted to keep koi for many years, but as I have previously always had young children I couldn't risk having a pond deeper than the kids could stand in to their waist, this would not of been fair on the Koi. I am in the process of hand digging my pond at the moment and making sure I have thought of everything before the point of no return. In the evenings, tired after hours of digging I watch your videos and it spurs me on no end. So thank you so much for your help and keep up the great videos. Brendan.

Hey Terry another great video. About that air lock you were talking about. On my 2nd tub the force of water pushes my media away from one side. How is it you don't seem to have this problem? Any idea's on how to stop that? I can send you a photo or video showing you if this doesn't make sense. Thanks again.
@Wrighty9 жыл бұрын
Ron Yelenich Hi Ron,Nice to hear from you m8. What drop do you have between tubs. You only need about 4 inches. The media being moved away from one side is because the water entering the tub from your connecting pipe is coming into the tub too fast. If your unable to reduce the drop between tubs I would put a T on the bottom of the connecting pipe to share the flow to each side of the tub and steady the rush of water. Regards Terry

Hi Terry, I came across your videos and I think they are fantastic. For many years I have always wanted to build a Koi pond but never knew which direction to go as far as construction type, when I get round to it I have decided to build mine from green treated softwood railway sleepers approx 4 metres long, 2.5 metres width and 1.2 meter depth, would your home made three barrel K1 filter system be better than these vortex multi chamber systems that can be purchased, also what sort of pump would you recommend. Thank you for your amazing videos. Regards Paul Parker
@Wrighty7 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, Thank you for your kind comments. This filter has been updated since this build as you can see in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGW3aYehh7mLd9E The filtration this gives is equal to the world famous Nexus filters. It gives the same if not better filtration at much less cost. I make your pond volume around 12000 ltr on the pond size you give, which is 2640 UK gallon. This system on 200 ltr tubs would easily do the job for your pond. Your pump size should be able to turn over your pond volume every 2 hours. This would make the pump 6000 lph but you have to add some for head pressure loss. This is the pump lifting the water above ground and the pipe work that slows the flow. I would look for a pond pump around 8000 lph. I'm not sure what you know so sorry if I'm telling you what your already aware of. You can find out more information on my website diypondfilters.com Hope this helps. You can also contact me on pondfilters@gmial.com I'll help all I can. Terry.

@Wrighty9 жыл бұрын
Harry Chung Hi Harry,Thanks m8. Must admit I'll never make a TV presenter lol. There was no real need to make the moving bed filter twin outlets, It's just that I had the parts spare, and they are more efficient and like you say it does look a lot better with the two. I've had no problems with airlines or drains m8. The only thing I had a problem with was the filter cages on the inlets like I showed in the video blocking with algae, which I removed. Why, have you had problems? Terry.

Wrighty A friend on mine set the drain fitting a little too low and the sediment built up and started blocking both the air and drain. Couldn't understand why it kept burping at him. Big pain in the rump to drain and replace the barrel.

I just have to ask you this... The line in from your pump seem to be on the smaller side (looks like 32mm or so) - I used to have a Oase Aquamax Eco 16000 pump with 32mm line to filter and return to the pond and the flow from this pump got severely restricted due to the pipe size resulting in that the pump died 4-5 years later. Ive since upgraded to the variable speed Aquamax Expert 21000 where it was advised that I used 50 or 70mm pipe all the way. So if you feed all your water from your pump through this filter I bet your pump would be under constant stress resulting in a premature death due to the pipe and hose sizes (the hose you used going into the filter would also cause alot of restriction due to its spiral profile - much better to use straight hose sized properly or pvc pipe going into the barrel. I am now looking at adopting your filter system and wonder if the flow in and out need to be based on the 50mm pipes throughout (as my line is built using 50mm pipe) and if the filters would be able to handle the full force of what this pump is capable of (or perhaps I should look into splitting the line so only part of the pumps feed goes through the filter?
@Wrighty6 жыл бұрын
Hi, The main line from the pump was 32mm but I changed it to 43mm which as you say was a lot better. I don't think you'll get all that flow through 50mm pipework without problems. The Pro filter is on 3 inch pipework and it does work really well. I have moved since this filter and have built myself an RDF (rotary drum filter) as show in my videos. If I were you I would look at least to have 3 inch return pipe with the size of pump you have. Terry.
@mini59me246 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but you lost me there - "... all that flow through 50mm pipework without problems"...? 50-70mm is way better than 40mm as it puts less or no stress on the pump. The pressure loss would be a lot less across the line. - If like you said, you used 40mm pipe from the pump to the filter, you wont increase the pressure going out - The opposite really as you would loose pressure along the line. So going from 40mm (in) to 70mm (through and out) dont make any sense. If 50-70mm pipe is used from the pump, then the same size pipe work ought to be used all the way through these barrels as this would preserve the overall pressure to/fro the pond. My little question on this was if these filters would handle it or if a slower rate flow needs to be applied on these filters (which simply could be achieved by splitting the pump feed and using a a valve allowing part of the feed bypassing the filters and part (just enough (whatever that might be (!?) go through the filter? - sort of what I have done now with a lot smaller bio filter that cleans, but is undersized and is painful to clean (foam mats :( ) - Havent seen any info in what you figure on Liter /minute that these filters best operates on.
@Wrighty6 жыл бұрын
Water in 50mm pipe gravity return is not going to flow as fast as water being pushed through a 50mm pipe by a 21000 lph pump, unless you have a lot of head pressure slowing the pump. The rule of thumb on this is that the outflow should be twice the size of the pump fed inflow. Flow through the filter depends on your pond size. You need to look to turn over your pond volume once every 2 to 3 hours. Flow through the filter with 3 inch pipe at most wants to be 8000 to 10000 lph for good filtration. You won't get that through 50mm pipe.
@mini59me246 жыл бұрын
Hi Wrighty. What you say dont make any sense. The rate of water in will be the same since the pipe is the same size and the barrels is below the feed - you would loose some pressure by pushing water into the barrel from the bottom up, until it hits the barrel exit - The would slow the flow rate. the slotted output would also slow the flow rate. so the exit pipes would not have any impact on whats going in. If anything, the slotted output would restrict the output flow making a large input problematic. Pipe length and diameter will preserve water pressure - you can not(!) increase the pressure by adding larger pipes down the track - its the input diameter that would dictate what you can do along the line and out. Not wanting to go into an argument on this, but Im not buying what you said (unless you can prove this somehow) - it contradicts everything to do with what I learnt over the years and what I have been advised by various professionals. - Still interested what you estimate the flow rate into these barrels should be?
@mini59me246 жыл бұрын
Hi Wrighty, follow up on what I just said... The slotted output from your filter is what (if anything) would/could cause issues. These slots would restrict the output from the drum resulting in an overflow problem (unless(!), you somehow sized these slots across an area where these cut out slots equal the input pipe dimension - if done correctly you would not loose any pressure or flow (other than the loss of pushing water upwards through the drums) - So I think your slots is your critical point - Not(!) the size pipes going from one barrel to another. - hope that makes sense

1) Have you considered why the UV is not handling the parasites (depending on which one is actually causing the problem, i.e. if it's water born or not)? Have you wiped down the bulb to ensure good light penetration into the water? 2) Your filter is now ultra efficient with three bins of media, but you are still showing hair algae coating the inside of the pond. It's because the filter carries the nitrogen cycle as far as it can: nitrates, but you have very few plants to use the nitrate and phosphate in the pond water. I'd still cover about half the water surface with floating plants and use some edge plants like rushes or taro. It's a different visual mindset, a more mysterious and 'natural' look to see the fish swimming into the clear areas from the planted ones, but one I find more pleasing, and it should keep the water ultra clear and the matted algae at bay. -------------- How is the medication working?
@Wrighty9 жыл бұрын
PalJoey1957 Hi, I have to get a microscope to know exactly what I'm dealing with really. I keep saying I'm going to get one but haven't yet. I will take the bulb out my UV and clean that. I have split the flow through the UV to slow it down. When I was In the garden centre last week I ask for water hyacinth but they told me it is to early for them. I do have 6 large lilies and some other plants in the pond. I have also done several water tests and am getting 0 on nitrates. So I wondered if it was my test kit as I thought I should show some on a mature pond, so I've just bought a brand new kit and I'm still getting 0 nitrates. also 0 nitrites and 0.2 ammonia on the last test. Thanks for your advise, it's very much appreciated. Terry.
@PalJoey-rm2yh9 жыл бұрын
Wrighty It sounds like you're going full bore at the problem, so I'll shut up and let you follow up. Get the plants. I have yet to see a well planted pond that was not healthy. P.S. that UV bulb should probably be wiped down every month or two, but you'll be able to see how fast it gets coated.
