Thanks Dr Deck for showing us these failures. I’m sure some people learned something valuable today.

Structural engineer from Australia here. I’ve very much appreciated your videos… currently building a deck of my own. I wouldn’t mind a video on complex acute angles (e.g. I’ve got three bearers meeting a post at two levels with odd angles).

Man. If I get a chance but I’m sure you will be completed before then lol

If you see someone has installed a ledger on top of the siding, you could say that they are their own code book.

There are always new types of ledger fasteners coming out over the last few years. Ultra expensive, high ratings and stuff. Every time I try the new stuff I think, ok if it’s new I’m sure it’s been tested but really only for strength. Not for over time and through the elements.

This is a more informative video where there are actual inserts in the lower left of the screen, instead of white squares and rectangles. An alternative subtitle could be Oh the Crazy Things We People Can Do!! -Bob...

Sad to see that I as a teenager had built a better deck for my parents. In my 40s now and just recently demoed it to build an all new deck. If I was just building the exact same size I probably could've actually gotten away with using the old framing. No rot after all these years and still nice and sturdy with our wonderful Northern Ohio weather 😅.
