🔷 ABOUT US 🔷
We're a DIY family building our "forever homestead" from 15 acres of raw undeveloped land in Tennessee. All of our content is family friendly and safe for everyone to enjoy.
In today's video we continue building our new 12 x 10 free standing deck on the back of our 1988 Palm Harbor Single Wide Mobile Home. Today we show how to build deck railings. We use a simple but tried and true deck construction method that is easy to do and will still pass most code inspections for deck building. We also invent a clever tool to help us install the balusters much faster and more precise. Let's go!

That home is no longer a Palm Harbor. It is a Sam & Angela & Son's home. It is no longer a mobile home as it has no wheels and is on a foundation. And it no longer looks like a single wide. It is a beautiful home and getting better each day. I am so proud of and for you guys for doing a fantastic job.

I thought for sure you were going to pop on an all season mud room to the back because….kids and all their stuff . Maybe that super well built deck will transform after all the code stuff is done??😉LOL All your Reno’s are fantastic!!! Really enjoy it and can’t wait until the gardens start 👍 You two are really showing what patience, budgeting and good old sweat equity can accomplish. Your boys are learning so much about team work, the ups and downs of doing it yourself and making things work out, and the satisfaction of hard work over time. I love that they aren’t stuck in front of some device but outside actually playing!!! ❤️

Very nice job Sam. I like the look you chose for the rails and balusters. The only thing I did differently was raise the bottom rail to the width of a 2x4 and screwed my balusters flush so I had about 3-1/2” to clean the deck of dirt, leaves, and winter snow. Keep up the good work.

Oh wow guys, this deck is looking so incredible, I really love those black pieces it is a nice look, much better than straight wood. It is also so wonderfully huge, I am hoping that I can get one of those built on the back of my house, it won't be that large but it will be half that size and it will look so cool. I really love everytime you post a new video, Sam you are so great at your building and construction skills and I love to see each new project that gets started, and that tool you created to get those rails up was so awesome. Also seeing your boys riding around in there cute buggy was just so cute and they looked like they were having a really great time and that is so wonderful for them. I am so excited for you all to be able to finally move into your mobile home that doesn't look like a mobile home it looks amazing and I am really liking it so much. I had a 4' bench made with 2x12's next to the back door. it was great for sitting with coffee on weekend mornings, planning projects. Shopping bags set aside for unlocking the door. My muck boots & yardwork sneakers lived under it. If you make a longer bench, filthy shoes and boots for the whole family need not enter the house ( and it's simple extra seating for events). You will have to do a video of what your list is after you move in. Wondering what the priorities are. I mean, there is always sumthin'.

Sam, great work on designing and implementing your bannister spacing jig! Woodworking jigs are inexpensive to make. They will improve your accuracy, and it really helps with the workflow! These jigs are free to make from scraps and go a long way to making the tasks much more reliable and easy to accomplish! From watching your videos throughout your move, you may have outgrown the Craftsman Cordless tool lineup. You can hear them struggling to get the job done. It's time to contact Milwaukee or Dewalt to sponsor your channel. You definitely have the subscriber base to obtain these needed sponsorships. I'd recommend upgrading to either the M18 Fuel lineup from Milwaukee or Dewalt 20v professional cordless tools. Besides, who doesn't want free tools to boot. :) I'm sure you will see a massive performance upgrade, and you can thank me later, haha. You guys are doing a fantastic job with everything. Great to see a family working together as a team. All the best. Cheers

Sam. If you are cutting a 1x4 bring the saw depth a little more shallow. Bring the blade right to almost the minimum you need. That will help the shield push back on its own. If you have it set full depth and shield won't work properly to push back and then yes it does tend to bind.
