Such a rare thing to have a master player and a master educator embodied within the same person. Great stuff JH!

@UkuleleTonya, the Ukulele Jazz course is aimed at intermediate players. Anyone who can play a B-flat chord is overqualified to start the course! It gets more challenging toward the end... but by then you’ll be ready for it. 👍

Great video 😀 My answer to why C6 = Am7 = Notes G C E A C major is C D E F G A B C (no sharps or flats), so C6 is C major chord (1,3,5 notes of the major scale) plus the major 6th = C E G + A A minor is A B C D E F G A (no sharps or flats), so Am7 is A minor chord (1,3,5 notes of the minor scale) plus the 7th note of the minor scale = A C E + G. The 7th here, G, is one whole tone (two frets) down from the root note A. A minor is the relative minor scale to C major. The relative minor scale starts on the 6th note of the major scale, and has the same number of sharps and flats as the major scale (none for C major).

Thank you so much. Love how subtly and easily you guided us through a snazzy sounding version of Deck the Halls, weaved that ii-V7-I progression in there, hipped us to chord shapes and harmonic rhythm and graced us with your absolutely beautiful voice and expert playing. Easy to see why you are known as the best. And I bet a lot of people figured out why C6 and Am7 are the same chord. (hint, hint....chord tones) Thanks again.

Great video, and a great way to open a discussion about basic harmony... The simple explanation for why the open strings on a uke are two different chords is as simple as knowing that the notes for both those chords are the same. C6 is C,E,G,A . Aminor7 has the same notes in a different order (A,C,E,G)...those four notes happen to be the same notes as the open strings on a ukulele. The slightly more involved reason why they are called different things has to do with harmony, and the way we use different flavors of chords in different places. I look at it a lot like any other form of communication. Context is everything... If I say "whatever you want honey" after a big argument, that is a completely different meaning than the same sentence when we are deciding on what to order at a restaurant on 'date night". If I play the open strings on a uke at the end of a song that happens to be in C major, it sounds like a final chord...a resolution (although, not the best choice of a version for that chord) If I play the same strings and then play a D7 and then a G major that exact same chord takes on a completely different meaning and tension. once you start to get into chord "voicings" we enter territory that requires a much larger map.

The chord that you suggest * in bar 12 as a G7 (b9 b5) is merely a Db7 chord. Tritone substitution for the Dominant G9 movement to C6. Why would you think that naming it a G7 (b9 b5) is easier to explain or understand?
@jameshillmusiq2 жыл бұрын
Great question. You’re right about the tritone sub. But showing it as a G7(b9b5) tells the bass player to play a G, not a Db.

hope you don't mind me saying: that those chords would sound much better if they had major minor passing cords in between them because those jazz chords sound too much the same.
@Liserhoops4 жыл бұрын
The notes of an A minor 7 chord are A-C-E-G and the notes of the C6 are C-E-G-A same notes, same chord different name.
