55kg is 121 lbs, My rotary table is 177lbs, I made the mistake of bending over and lifting it by hand last month and my back STILL isnt right! I've had my wife and kids putting on my shoes & socks for me every morning for three weeks! I'm finally able to do it again alone the past cpl days- No more heavy lifting for me, Got my gantry crane all set up and a lifting eye built for the Rot-Tab

Stephan, I own two of them because they came with the Deckels I bought. The weight is cumbersome to work with but they’re really great for extending the machining area. I made really big parts on my Minimill with it and loved their accuracy. When setup correctly I couldn’t see or feel any transitions in meeting machined areas. And the reach of the y-axis on the Deckel has been to small many times now. And with this guy you just swap your y travel to your bigger x travel. They’re beautifully made and can be lifesavers in the shop. I also used it with a compact vice on top. One datum in the DRO for the back-left corner of the vice and a datum for the center of the rotary table. Quite universal in many cases. Thank you for sharing your Deckel adventures with us. I’m a big fan of the brand and your work. Thank you Stephan. Best! Job

Anyone who criticizes any PPE as unmanly or uncool is a twit. Health and safety aside, it's pretty damn nice to pull off the gloves and not have my hands be completely filthy. I don't think you have to justify this as a practical purchase. It's really cool, it made a satisfying and fun video to watch. I hope it was an equally fun and satisfying project for you. It is mechanically interesting and who knows, maybe one day it will be the hero tool that saves a project. It's nice to have an experienced machinist explain the purpose behind various features. I don't think I'd appreciate all the logic and thought that went into the design otherwise.

Hi Stefan, never underestimate giving your viewers the opportunity to peek inside of contraptions they would probably never have the opportunity to look at. Even the cleaning of gunk has that archeological expectation of what will be found under, quality wise. Stefan is hovering over a line. There are the machinists who move parts with tweezers (eg., Clickspring), and then there are those who use cranes (eg., CEE Cutting Edge Engineering). They represent the boundaries. Most of the craft is in the middle where stuff is moved by hand. Stefan has always been closer to the fine end. Now he needs a crane! All preconceptions have been exploded and all bets are off for the next project. Enjoy the work you do, and hope the perfect job for the new tool comes your way (and you can share it with us).

It does have some rust damage on the centering element, which is used also for direct indexing with locking mechanism pointing to the center of the table. I think to re-bore the housing to clean the rust pitting and wire cutting new oversized centering/indexing ring with some 0,02mm clearence. Anyway thanks for the video Stefan.

The last rotary table l tore apart had a special bearing from Kaydon. Very similiar to a QJ type bearing but with rollers instead of balls. For backlash adjustment of the worm drive the worm screw was a variable pitch lead. The worm screw could be adjusted axially to get the desired adjustment. RT was the 4th xais on a K&T HMC.

Enjoy Stefan, the 6017 is lovely (and, in a way, very suitable to the smaller machines with the narrow beds. On the FP3, you either need spacers to lift it off the table or, if you place it at the edge of the table, it ends up very far from the machine...). One point that needs some care is the clamping: since it's in the middle of the table, if one goes crazy on the clamp, it pulls the middle of the table a bit low and bows the end up high. So don't go crazy on the clamp.... :D I think this is different on the swivelling circular table 2236. Regarding the Moore, well, 6017 was Deckel's workhorse. The optical ones do 6 and 3 arc sec accuracy, so, beat that Moore, haha... :P

Adam Savage (of Mythbusters fame) is making a smaller form factor round safe door that has a number of gears around the perimeter that drive pins outward like you see in movies about banks years ago. He was asking why all the gears had 24 teeth (or multiple of that number) and he postulated that it was purely a manufacturing issue because of how the rotary indexing tables were designed with stops every 15 degrees. He was curious what was the reason for 15 degrees and not some other number.
@mpetersen6
@mpetersen6 2 ай бұрын
Likely because many plates that are used as retaining plates in machines commonly have 4, 6 or 8 screws holes. 24 positions covers that nicely. I used to have a Hardinge H-4 5C collet indexer. 24 index positions.

that's one nice table, and I hope you get some good use out of it. Sounds like you need to make a cart to hold it vertically while not in use, with wheels, or for use with a pallet jack. Some lifting eyes will help you greatly, better than beating up your straps on the clamp edges.

Hi Stephan. I am curious about the oil reservoir in the rotary table. Since it can be mounted in a side wise position on the vertical axis of the Deckel, what prevents the oil from leaking out? Does it also mean you have to store the table in a flat position? I suppose that only a certain amount of oil is to be used and replenished. Is there a drain plug? 🙂
@StefanGotteswinter
@StefanGotteswinter 2 ай бұрын
The vertical use is definitely not a permanent setup - oil will drip and run out. Its one of those temporary toolroom setups that get you something done and then you tear it down and refill the oil
