Just wanted to point out that the company responsible for the CGI in this movie, Angel Studios, would eventually go on to develop the Midnight Club games, become Rockstar San Diego, create the RAGE engine, and bring us Red Dead Redemption. Their magnum opus, of course, was the cutscenes for Mr. Bones. That's just a matter of fact.

We did have Virtual Reality in the early 1990's. I owned a VR headset in 1995 I paid $500 for (which was all the money my teen self could possibly put together). It was pretty much the same was what became big in the 2010's, only lower res with worse tracking, before augment reality was part of the mix. The biggest problem was that PCs did not have 3D graphics that could keep up with it. They needed to wait until 1997-1998, when all the gaming PCs had 3DFx cards. But even then, it would have been limited. But hey, 20 years after I had the headset I was making VR hardware professionally. Hollywood has never quite understood VR. Most of the time they confuse it with Tron or The Matrix, where you have plugged either your brain or whole body into a computer. In fact, you're sticking glasses on your head. Very different. The two that get the closest: Ready Player One, which uses some real modern tech to pretty much make all of the technical parts of using VR "Real" (ignoring the future part). Occasionally it loses the plot, like when VR players are running through the streets at the end of the movie, which is roughly the same as running down the sidewalk of a busy city with a cell phone stapled to your face and hoping traffic doesn't hit your. Ironically, the movie completely misunderstands video games, especially what makes a game good. The story would have us believe that what they would call an "Open World PVP Hardcore Full-Loot MMO" that resembles a fancy Second-Life with the economics of a predatory Free-To-Play game would be the experience that brings the world together and can then enslave the world. Disclosure: The movie is inspired by real VR tech and ideas that were being worked on at the time. If you ignore how Michael Douglas is rendered in the VR world and the cheesy movie style-interfaces, it's mostly reasonable. In fact, the way he uses the computer in the virtual world is similar to augmented reality interfaces I've worked with. The biggest issue is one of the major problems real VR has faced: there's no advantage over your 2D desktop or regular monitor-based 3D for tasks like "document management", as seen in the film. So most of the stuff he did in the movie did not need VR. But it was real that people had tried VR for those things in 1994 (although most of that didn't get anywhere).

Heinlein and King are both misunderstood. Heinlein is sometimes accused of being fash, when really he viewed himself as a John Connor-like futurist. He believed that military readiness was the only way to stop tyranny. King is often accused of being anti-Christian, when really he's got no beef with working-class Christians. Rather, he punches upward at oppressive, pharisaic, ruling-class hypocrites (like a proper first-century Christian). Plus, his villains are often demons or are in league with demons.

I love "magical technology" movies from the 80s and 90s, back when no one knew what computers could or couldn't do XD, especially when there's some kind of virtual GUI interface where you are basically flying around as you type things, and the computer says out loud everything that its doing. "Input security protocol. Access denied. Overriding scurity. Accessing mainframe." And like, what are they typing? "Fly forward. Fly up to glowing tetrahedron that represents a program file. Access glowing tetrahedron program."

Great review as always Decker. And yes while the Lawnmower Man is riddled with the most basic of tropes and slight leaps in logic when it comes to virtual reality, it’s got its charm as a cheesy cult classic 90’s flick. Plus it’s more logically believable than its sequel. i have so many memories about this movie, but i seen it once. io'm from switzerland, and back then, barely anybody knew any english, and our biggest gripe with this movie was, how you read that title. in our minds the movie was about everything, but what it actually was. especially with that dorky cover we got in the german version. also, i'm pretty sure, if everybody would try VR once, 70% of the populus wouldn't be watching corn on it, they'd be hurling out their intestants. i can play for 24 hours on a normal screen no problem, with 3D glasses which i tried, i could also do it. was in the cinema a few times during the ccraze too, never felt ny ill feeling. but once i put on that PS4 VR when a friend got it, i first tried a racing game. that felt already really bad. but then i tried skyrim, and my head started jolting out of muscle memory to even out the movement my brain visually perceived, when i was walking and it took me 3 steps, and i had to take the headset off cause i got violently nauseous. now imagine ppl that just rarely even look at a screen trying this out ^^ also love how hollyweird simply decided to throw in the evil religion stuff, they probably just thought that stpehen forgot to add it. wouldn't surprise me if this wasn't part of his publishing contract, to have that in there, cause holly weird, is holy weird like that.
