A contender for the title of longest time stuck in development hell, The Meg's movie rights were first sold before the first novel was even published. However, it would take 22 years and a joint project between Hollywood and China before the film would actually see the light of day. Jason Statham fights a giant shark. There's your plot.

As an Aussie I can tell you, if informed about a giant shark, we would just panic trying to find a deep frier big enough to make a ton of flake from the Meg, never again would an Australian Fish and Chip shop run out of Flake again.

This movie was definitely fun to watch. It was nice to see what is essentially a "B-monster movie" that has fun with itself on a massive budget. Especially, with Jason Statham doing his own stunts considering he actually performed Olympic diving in the past. I love those mini submarines!

It's explained in Meg origins that another scientist was actually using a remote control buoy 2 cause sonar disturbances or something like that to draw up another megalodon back in the first book. That's the one Jonas saw in the beginning of the story that caused him to lose his job and be put in the mental hospital
@kevinnorwood8782
@kevinnorwood8782 5 жыл бұрын
My only tiny problems with this movie were plot points where it differed from the book. The first one was how the Meg got to the surface. In the book, it isn't a geyser caused by a sub explosion. They manage to capture the Meg (or rather, what they THINK is the Meg), but it turns out to be a male. A much larger FEMALE then attacks the male and kills it as the net holding the male is carrying it to the surface. As this is happening, her mate's warm blood is shielding her from the colder temperatures of the water around her. Second problem is Angel, the female Meg's daughter. We see her appear to swim out of her mother's mouth as she dies (I'm convinced that that shark swimming out of the Meg's mouth at the end IS Angel), but in the book, she is correctly born along with siblings, several of which their mother kills because she sees them as too weak to survive on their own in the wild.

Considering how sharks' teeth are attached, when it bit the glass like that they should all have been left embedded in the glass. Then it would have spent most of the rest of the movie gumming people to death while it's backup teeth took time to rotate into place.
@faceless2302

Does a shark that big really need teeth to eat people anyway? Yeah sure it looks scary but it's probably swallowing them whole most of the time anyway.

Fun fact: One commonly held belief among paleontologists about how the Megalodon went extinct is because they were out-competed by smaller, faster sharks. The way the smaller sharks swarmed around and fed on the meg's corpse is a subtle little nod to that theory, I think.

I love that Jason Statham is an olympic level swimmer, a multi black belt holder, and a certified track driver. Truly is a badass IRL that’s why i give him more leeway for only really doing action than any other genre because he earned the right to do it, and above all he knows what he is and has no qualms with it. He may not win an oscar (see butterfly his best acting) but he’ll sell the shit out of tickets to men wanting to live vicariously. Man i’d love him in John Wick

2:30 you can actually see the first initial meg to the right as the sub's explosion rips it apart. As for where this one came from, we find out in one of the later books that Jonas wasn't the first to actually discover the megs. There was another fellow that was using a large underwater probe to try and bait the megs up. So basically the meg in the opening came up in one of the earlier blooms from when the probe broke through the barrier.

Remarkable how this movie is EXACTLY like all other action movies before it. It beats mow how these things keep being successful. You could run a checklist of cliches, like "hero accused of something bad in the past is proven right and comes out of retirement to save the day", "hot chick to be saved by the hero is the only survivor of her team", "supermonster defeated by smaller creatures" (they even used that in How to Train Your Dragon 2!), Evil Businessman wants everyone to keep risking their lives so he can bag the discovery money/fame, etc.

I remember this movie came out when the Baby Shark song was popular. So in the theatre, you hear people singing "Baby shaky doo da doo" when the Meg showed up in every scene.

Thanks for reviewing, love your reviews and been a big fan of the books for years. According to Steve Alten, Disney dropped production after Deep Blue Sea was a bust, then it was picked up by New Line Cinema who dicked around with it for a few years before selling to Warner Bros. Also they're going to be making his Loch Ness monster book series which has a crossover book with the Meg series. I'm hoping for a Prehistoric Sea Monsterverse.

The one thing I remember about this movie is that, beside having a higher strength strangle hold on it by way of CCP approval being more of a necessity than other films, the ads on TV heavily featured Bobby Darin's "Somewhere Beyond the Sea." Which I find strange given how the song's about getting back to the loving arms of the singer's lady. It's kind of like having a Slasher film with the killer being a stalker of the protagonist have "We'll Meet Again" by Arthur Young and Vera Lynn.
