The way I take this film, is that none of it's a dream. Instead it's a set of parallel realities and the device that he had his head in was causing all versions of him to share parts of memory. This also ties up the jumpscare fakeout endings of every film in the series as having actually happened. Every time, the Tall man won, and we switched to another reality where they survived instead.

I have similar theory. It is a dream, alternate realities, memories, and time travel all in one. The first movie ended with Mike dead. But Reggie so devastated, as this movie stated he had already lost a wife and daughter, was hellbent on finding a way to save Mike. He lost his family, he cannot lose his friends. So by chasing the Tall Man, who in this movie explained he has thousands of himself in many realities, hence the alternate realities, led Reggie getting stuck in endless realities. Refusing to give up until he found one where his friends would survive. But dimension traveling, time traveling, it took its toll on his mind. Him dying of old age, is the happy ending, the happy reality he was searching for. Since his friends were still alive in it. even though he lost his sanity and dies, they live. The cut to the other characters after credits is them in one of the not happy realities.

I, for one, like the introduction of string theory. Yes it's a bit of a cop out to explain the all over the place plots and twists but, it also lends to theories of dreams being links to our opposite selves in other dimensions. Old man broken by years of loss and fighting musing to himself about a "normal" death. Hahaha I love it. Reminds me of a twisted vision I had back in high school. I decided the best way to end all television sitcoms is basically just introduce the whole cast to a horror villian and kill them all. Full house would get an egg from Alien delivered. The cast of Friends would go on a road trip and break down in front of Leatherface's house. Sex in the city, whole cast could be stalked by the Predator through the city. Steven Urkle could bring the Lamont configuration over to Carls house, opening up just to say, "did I do that???" Any show. It should be an industry prerequisite: If youre gonna have a show, youve gotta end it with Freddy Krugar, Jason, or the Killer Clowns from Outer space killing everybody. Might as well. Also play your sitcoms cheery theme song everytime the monster takes out a cast member.

Little theory of mine: the sphere extracted from Mike's head at the end is the very same the Tall Man carries out of the original portal when 'Jebediah Morningside never does come back.' Held off watching this until I could see the film again (last night after the kids were in bed), and then immediately watched again because of something I noticed. Reggie's uniform is stained and tattered in the beginning of the film, so badly he stole the other guy's clothes. Midway through, Reggie emerged from a dimensional fork suddenly wearing the uniform again (in much better condition), and from there on the uniform gets wrecked by events until in the final shot in the 'Cuda...it nearly perfectly matches how it looked in the beginning of the film. I don't think it's a time loop. I suspect Reggie died by knife near the end of Phantasm I at the hands of the Tall Man, who then claimed him for his own amusement, letting Reggie and company have just enough victories to keep instilling hope. Tall Man does say, "You don't exist; you're just MY bad dream." I also now think the brain in the sphere the Tall Man was massaging in an earlier film was what remained of Reggie, and he was instilling new horrors into Reggie's mind. As such, films II through V really were just phantasms in Reggie's mind. All of it, from the time the Lady in Lavender knifed him until the end. This would mean the Tall Man has been Ravaging Reggie's mind since 1979! As time permits, I'm going to re-watch them all with this in mind, and see what I take away from the series now. FYI, the Lady in Lavender was played by the same actress in both the first and fifth film; I think we're getting older, and mid-50's doesn't look so unappealing anymore. Dawn's farmhouse was, in reality, Reggie Bannister's personal house - that's how committed he was to the project in addition to producing the film and his wife doing make-up. Lastly, the CGI was unacceptable. I've seen Star Wars fan films (Darth Maul: Apprentice was truly excellent kzbin.info/www/bejne/epvSkGxnn7Nmhs0 ) with better effects. I know this was a labor of love by cast and crew, but there's no excuse for a professional film maker like Coscarelli to have it look that bad.
@DarthRushy5 жыл бұрын
Given that Phantasms III and IV are centered around Mike's transformation, I can't really agree with this. V is just a shit movie and they had no idea what they were making with it, there's no way around this. Reggie sure has a sweet house though.

Interesting theory. I think it works. I always wondered why they kept Jody in the movie, but I guess it was due to loyalty or something. I know the effects were not great but I guess that was the best available to them at the time.
@GanonGhidorah6 жыл бұрын
Y'know it might be crazy of me to say...but I actually think this movie might be brilliant... How you may ask? Well - here's where it gets nuts - EVERY single one of those scenarios - from Reggie being insane in an asylum, dying in a hospital surrounded by friends, to the post-apocalyptic world ruled by the Tall Man - ALL happened... How? Multiverse Theory... Literally speaking, what we saw were several parallel stories following Reggie's existence throughout the multiverse. The Tall Man practically confirms this by talking about how he himself exists across Infinity - every single time they kill or defeat him, another one from another universe can just pop-in to take his place... Somehow or another, because of the Temporal Distortions the Tall Man is causing, and Reggie's obsession with him - the man himself calling Reggie his own "Bad Dream" - the time-anomalies are beginning to effect Reggie as well, giving him a strange psychic insight to how his life is across several alternate universes... Ironically, it seems that in universes where the Tall Man doesn't exist...Reggie is doing objectively worse than the ones where he does. Because in a world without the conflict of the Tall Man, Reggie is committed to an Insane Asylum, and in another, he dies a premature death of old-age - despite the fact that in parallel timelines, he's still kicking. The conflict is what keeps him going...

The idea (if I'm correct) was that these small episodes that eventually made up P:R were kind of place holders to keep Phantasm in the public consciousness until the budget required to make PE could be attained. @@DarthRushy Continuity was never a strong point of the series. However, it doesn't matter in the case of the "rest home" scenes. They're not reality. That's the problem of Ravager - there is zero consistency. Phantasm was always surreal and relied on dream logic, but there was still a plot and characters we could get invested in. In Ravager, there's so much rewriting and reality splintering going on that it's impossible to get attached to anything.

2:09 Or American S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (which would be called "T.R.A.C.K.E.R." since "stalker" means "tracker" in Eastern Europe). 2:44 Wadcutters?! Why wadcutters?! Never mind "steel-jacketed." Sure, you CAN use wadcutters for D-FENS, but they're intended for targets. The term "wadcutter" is used by Doc Heller (played by Tom Waits) in Mystery Men, but in a way that makes no sense, and in reference to a whimsical non-lethal device. There was also mention of a "clam shell holster." I'd buy that for a dollar before I'd begin to try to comprehend what he meant by "it's got a wadcutter." 3:02 That quad do0mstick isn't quite compact enough for those confined spaces, though. Too bad he didn't have the Mad Max gun Mike used to make a shotgun trap in Phantasm II. 3:54 Notice how Mike's wearing the same kind of beige corduroy blazer that Arnie Blondestone (played by Paul Giamatti) wore in 'John Dies at the End'. 12:07 Extract that stock, greenhorn! 18:30 Yer not gonna talk about how his head wound switches from the left side of his head to the right side for no reason? 20:02 Those are pineapples. High-explosive fragmentation grenades. Basically omnidirectional shotgun shells. They wouldn't create that much fire in the explosion (there's barely any IRL). Plus, later on, he says they were "fire bombs" or something. So why do they look like pineapples? Why not use props that actually match the description?! Incendiary grenades look more like canisters. I know Dave Hartman through DeviantArt, but I'm not gonna give him a hard time about that. He actually did some S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fan art for me back in 2005. Yes, two years BEFORE the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game was released. 21:22 He blew himself up for nothing since The Tall Man has massive stockpiles of clones. Palpatine got nothin'! 21:41 Why are they driving on the wrong side of the road? In the earlier movies, we see that Reggie has a tendency to drive in the middle of the road. We also see that just about anyone runs the risk of flipping their car, then having their car explode if there's anything resembling a boulder on the side of the road. Anyone with halfway decent reaction time should be able to avoid that. Maybe take some damage in the process, but without totaling their car.

It looks low budget, in that it's digital, but it's competent as hell. I thought the action and effects were fantastic. I was blown away at how much I enjoyed it and I'd rank it above 3 & 4 for my personal favorites. It's a shame to see so many people trashing it online. Phantasm has never made sense, it's just unique and entertaining. I think Ravager is a fine addition to the series and a great send off if we never get anything else from the original cast. I'm sure it'll be rebooted at some point.

This one felt like a knock off Netflix premiere

So... Wasn't this entire series originally about some boy coping with the loss of his brother and imagining the tall man as a way to represent his emotional trauma?

Reboot, with Christopher Walken on Munster-style raisers/platforms...and I was going to say NOT Michael Bay, but considering the women existing for sex, bromances, and exploding cars and houses, the only thing missing is a helicopter.

Soooo... I know it's early... Buuuut... You should totally have this summer be "The Summer Of Puppet Master VS Demonic Toys". That would truly be glorious.

Remember, they did make a Nightmare on Elm Street film without Robert England. But i feel like this series was too independent to continue just for money's sake.

i always thought the dreams were other realities, with the tallman being in all of them at the same time. Never saw the fourth or fifth movies though.

The real horror of this for me is seeing how old Mike looks. Especially since we're the same age.

This Phantasm Ravager movie made me want to smoke a cigarette backwards. The director must be some sort of fu*king mong for creating this amateurish, boring cheap lookin CGI sh*t fest, I don't like it when people give this movie credit on any level because it really is awful, it's not worthy enough to be called a Phantasm sequel on any level. The 1st Phantasm movie is pure class, the 2nd movie is excellent, the 3rd movie is great fun and the 4th movie is fascinating. this 5th Phantasm Ravager movie is leper sh*t.

my question is have those giant sentinels got a tiny brain inside or a giant brain and if so is there a Godzilla sized kaiju man as opposed to a tall man?
