Fix Your Deck’s Wifi
Activate developer mode in the deck's settings.
Then there will be a new entry on the left side panel at the bottom for developer.
Go there, scroll down and find wifi power management and turn it off. It'll ask you to reboot. Done.
Download Games in Sleep Mode
Switch to Desktop Mode
Open Steam and start downloading a game
Go to system settings and search for sleep mode in the top left box
Go to the Energy Saving submenu
Under Screen Energy saving, pick a small option like 1 minute and start a game downloading
This is great if you’re downloading a big game or a few games overnight
Check out the updated Refresh Rate Slider
One of the biggest upgrades with the Steam Deck OLED was the new version of SteamOS
One of the biggest changes was to the refresh rate slider.
Before you could change FPS and refresh rate independently but now its unified and thanks to the 90hz panel on the Steam Deck OLED, whether you want to play at 30fps, 40fps, 60fps or even 90fps it’ll change the refresh rate automatically to match the frame rate you want.
So when you set it to 30, it’ll keep the refresh rate at 90 but if you set it to 40, the screen will set to 80hz.
I’ve always really liked the Steam Deck’s built in frame limiter but some people would use it in some games and not in others.
These days, I ALWAYS recommend using it for every game out there whether its a Steam Game or an emulated game through emudeck.
Get ProtonGE
I’m sure you’ve noticed that some games just don’t seem to work on the Steam Deck.
By default you can pick different versions of Proton and while in most cases, Proton Experimental will fix your issue, older games like Arkham Asylum still don’t work right out of the box.
That’s where Proton GE comes in. It’s basically a version of Proton that’s not handled by Valve so it can implement different tools that Valve can’t.
All you have to do to get it is head over to desktop mode, go to the app store and download ProtonUP-Qt
Then click add version and grab the latest version of Proton GE
Once they’re added, you’ll be able to select them in the compatibility menu in Game Mode which is great

We all know how annoying it is checking reddit or youtube videos for the perfect Steam Deck settings.
Well, there’s a great website called ProtonDB that’ll fix all your problems
Literally every game on Steam has its own page, and people who play on the Deck will fill out a form explaining what settings they used, what proton version and any weird tips or tricks that might fix a game that doesn’t work.
A good example is a game like The Quarry which runs like ass on PC thanks to its launcher but by using ProtonDB I found a launch command that skips the launcher entirely
So if you’re ever stuck head there for a quick fix
Start Using Dual Track Pad Typing
Using the dpad and face buttons to navigate a keyboard is one of the big edges SteamOS has over Windows, but it’s still not great
But something that makes SteamOS better is dual trackpad typing
Whenever you have the keyboard up, put your thumbs on the left and right track pads and each one will be able to cover its respective half of the keyboard
It takes a minute to get used to but after a little bit, you’ll be flying across that keyboard and you’ll spend less time using it which I think is the ultimate goal

Another way to download games with the screen off is to plug it into the dock. It turns off the Steam Deck's screen since it's connected to a TV, even if the TV is turned off.

Sorry boss, I knew all these tips. The only tip I would add is learning to use the GPU clock selector to smooth out some games. I found RE4 Remake to be basically unplayable with how I consistent the framerate was, but locking it (by using Steam Overlay 3 to check the average GPU clock) made it so the game basically locked to 40Hz and dropped a ton of power usage. I GPU clock limit most games now!

My default "Enable Wifi Power Management" was already set to On. Are you saying it needs to be set to On or should it be Off. According to the message under it, it sounds like it should be set to Off. Just a little confused because of how you worded it and the video showing it in the On state.

Also you can absolutely remote play on the portal from outside your house. You just need WiFi same as chiaki. Chiaki does run great in the deck, highly recommend

I've just changed when the screen dims from 5 minutes to 1 so I don't have to worry about the screen burning out. Have had mine since 2022 and man do i love it just upgraded to a 2tb SSD and yeah thought the process to Re image the deck was gonna be a nightmare and man it was a beyond easy.

07:19 haha same. Also use a dual sense when docked and have found myself sorly missing touchpad typing. I wonder if it would work with analog sticks? Having one stick covering half of the keyboard, maybe using the L2/R2 triggers to "press" down on the respective stick. Guess the lack of haptics would make it harder, but it would be interesting to try out.

PC version of the game is in a pretty rough state in general. Steam Deck struggles to keep up when you have the game mode set to Hard or higher.

Gyro aiming is amazing and it's disappointing that it's not implemented officially in more games. It's the one feature that I wish Xbox would implement in their controller. HD rumble is also really awesome and, I wish that was something that was more common in gaming.

As long as you don't have to use Gyro aiming or can turn it off I've no problems with it's existence and think it's great for everyone who can use it to have a new way to manipulate their games. I just hope it's never hard integrated into anything as that would just be unplayable for some people with movement disorders.

@@aerikbranch3440 as a predominantly handheld gamer, I agree. I don't want gyro controls hard integrated or mandatory in any game. If I am on a road trip and have to rely on gyro controls, I would be having a pretty bad time. I do think that controllers have been holding back the potential for development into new ways to play. Xbox and PlayStation have made very little changes in their controllers. Nintendo has been embracing new things for awhile. Even if it sucks. Companies need to take more risks. Eventually, it will pay off.

I don't wanna be "that guy" but I wanted to clear something up with 4:16. WINE is not an emulator at all, it's a compatibility layer. WINE is short for "WINE Is Not an Emulator". Instead of emulating x86 instructions, WINE dynamically takes Windows API/system calls and translates them to something Linux can understand and execute. DXVK works essentially the same way by translating DirectX calls to Vulkan, which Linux natively supports. Windows applications running through WINE on Linux are actually fully native, though compatibility issues do arise every now and then because Windows is proprietary software that the WINE team needs to reverse engineer. This is a oversight that a lot of people seem to get wrong and A lot get turned off thinking that SteamOS uses "emulation".

Proton doesn't emulate. Proton uses wine which is a translation layer to make windows applications and games to work in Linux.
