Decluttering is a constant process, isn't it, especially when the children are constantly growing and changing? I've been a minimalist for 11ish years and sometimes (often) I get completely overwhelmed by stuff that's crept back in. And I still have pangs when I get rid of stuff that I was using and I'm not using anymore, or stuff that people have given me that just doesn't work for our family. I have a brother who is living in an RV full time with his three kids and was trying to tell my mom that they probably don't want to receive gifts for Easter, and she couldn't hear me. It's like the idea that someone might not want stuff is unbearable. Stuff can be a real burden if it doesn't fit in your little space. I'm really grateful for the constant encouragement that you give us with your videos, to do and redo what we've committed to and as a tool to communicate with our people, what we're doing and why. Thank you.

Well timed! I am doing a Lent inspired declutter and I've been judging my past efforts. I'll stop!! lol I'm dedicated to 4 rounds of 40 items as a reminder of simplicity and passing along abundance to those who could use my items for a fraction of their original price. I feel like this season is even more intentional and I'm getting rid of items I didn't want to a year or two ago! My husband says he may participate, too!

As always, I agree with Dawn on constantly de-cluttering to maintain and keep the inventory low. Yet I also believe that, Maintaining equals "Habits." I think that's what it boils down to, just the habit of putting things away after you get them out or cleaning up after yourself after you make a mess. Making the bed daily is a habit and it took me forever to realize this. Once I figured that out, the house looked nice. Or at least it was 15 minutes away from tidy if I did get distracted and leave things out. But these days, I just work hard to put items away right away, wipe crumbs off the counter immediately, wipe down the stovetop after every use, quickly wipe the front and inside of the microwave whenever I see any spot Etc. I'm a firm believer in clean before you have to clean and make it a HABIT.😉
@swrigley98612 жыл бұрын
So true. It took me a long time to realize that since I had to do the dishes and wipe down the counters and table after a meal at some point, I might as well do it right after the meal and enjoy a clean kitchen for several hours instead of waiting and doing it right before the next meal and having a messy kitchen in the meantime.

I know that exact feeling. My Hubby & I spent last wk decluttering & organizing 3/4 of our kitchen & we've gotten rid of about 250+ items. Yday, he went to Sam's Club, Walmart & Aldi & stocked up on some food & essentials due to what is going on in the world. It was all piled up in the kitchen. I felt overwhelmed, but he did really good & has most of it put in other areas, so the kitchen is feeling much better. Whew!

For those of us who take in and empathize in a BIG way, it can be difficult to get things done when the world around us seems to be falling apart . Years ago, I forced myself to compartmentalize my empathy and now find it easier to put away my sorrow for others and feelings of helplessness in order to keep my home in a bit of order. If not, I'd just melt into a puddle of tears because as good as things are in my life, there is always something horrible going on in the world to feel bad about. It's not easy but it is necessary to keep going. It also gives one focus and insight into gratitude and making time to help others through volunteering, etc.,

I'm 62 and I'm so looking forward to having a house where "maintenance decluttering" is the only decluttering needed. I'm still working on the big declutter. It's taking some time, especially now as my disabled daughter (who's condition is getting worse) is moving back into my house so I can help care for her, with all her stuff (especially kitchen stuff). But it would've been a lot worse if I hadn't already decluttered my own kitchen to some degree. I dread to think where I could put her things if my kitchen was still bulging at the seams. Between you, Cas and Dana, and your amazing course, I'm slowly getting my life in order. I've learned that I don't need to hold onto things that I MIGHT need one day, or things that I haven't used for years. Thank you, all three of you.

And thanks Dawn, for reminding yourself and us to not be hard on ourselves!

@emmelia-60682 жыл бұрын
I agree -- very practical and helpful. I believe as my "decluttering muscles" have grown, my frustration at maintenance has almost completely disappeared. After all, my husband and I live in our home and we use "things" all day every day. We can't expect a "never-messy" home. Right now there are 4 books, a couple of knitting projects, a comfy blanket, the shoes I kicked off, a coffee cup, etc. etc. in the TV room where I cozy up in the afternoons. But because all of those things have a place to live, I don't feel worried about putting them away the way I used to. As we've made so much more space in the home, our things are so much easier to put away .... of course I do understand it's much easier for us "empty-nesters" :-) ! So grateful for your videos, Dawn!

I work from home so that means I am in my space all the time. I have found that when I walk into a space during a break that feels hectic to me, the best thing I can do is simply one small task and then go back to my work. For some reason doing that one small task motivates me to do other small tasks during my next break and so on. Before I know it my space is tidy again and that hectic feeling is gone.

Another great video, Dawn! I often see people complaining about how their decluttering didn't work, and their house is still messy. But they (like me) are probably not always doing the 'Maintain' part of the puzzle. You can't just do a big declutter once, and expect your home will stay clean and tidy forever more. The maintenance part is so important. Also when you have family members who have different organising styles, this doesn't help. I try to clean off the kitchen bench twice a day, otherwise the stuff just keeps attracting more stuff!
@bridgeteastman25602 жыл бұрын
I think this is such a great analogy for life! It's tempting to have the mentality that we do things once and it's done. That's not the case in any area of our lives. We do, however, build the muscles that make it easier for us to maintain day to day or even after a season where something detailed is from daily maintenance. Thanks for the reminder. Now I just have to help my husband understand that after I declutter it's important to have am organization system put in place. To be fair to him, in the last I bought so many bins and baskets to try and contain the mess and only recently figured out how this process of decluttering and drastically minimizing inventory is the essential FIRST step for success.

In some of the minimalism stuff that I have read, this topic of maintenance has come up and the solution that I remember is that seasonally we have to go back and check each space. It's not as daunting as it is the first time around because it's usually just a bit of an issue after 3 months. It gives us some grace that we change, our lives change, the seasons change, and a seasonal reset helps us think about what we really want for the next season ahead. This is so sad and hard but so necessary for kids' stuff. I grieve a bit every time I do it! My kids are 8 and 11 years old and last time I decluttered again, I realized that no one cares about crafts or drawing anymore except me. Here's to a new season of being a pre-teen who loves music (oldest) and learning how to play baseball (8 year old).

Dawn, this is very useful. Declutter, organize, and maintain, with maintenance including future decluttering and organizing. My pantry has been very well organized, but over the last two years I've bought stuff I thought it would be good, or fun, to use, and, little by little, the pantry has gotten cramped and messy again. I have TOO MUCH INVENTORY, so I don't always see what's in there and will buy something again before I've used up what I have. Yesterday, I started re-decluttering my pantry by trying to use up everything in it. I won't go food shopping, except for basics like milk, fruit, and flour, until there's nothing left except stuff I use all the time. It's making for interesting recipe ideas!

Yes!!!!! I’ve been feeling the same way! I think also another problem is that the item either doesn’t have a clear home, or the home is cumbersome to get to. If my family has to lift, open, or move anything to put it back, they will just set it down instead and walk away. Then it’s silently understood that it has become my problem to put away.
@kmac24822 жыл бұрын
This is so true! I have tried to declutter to the point that there are no stacks (ie. of pots), or the need to remove one pan to get another out. And to make sure that there is extra space to put something away in a drawer so that you don't have to use two hands or move things. My family too is like this in terms of not bothering to put away things if its "too much" work, and honestly I am too though I do make more of the effort to put it away anyway.

Your comment really helped me, made me realize okay I can declutter a room then organize it knowing I’ll have to do some upkeep and go through the rooms again makes me feel confident that when I organize the first room the decisions on where and in what to keep things isn’t so serious that I get stuck deciding, I completely understand when you said your enjoying things instead of hating your days that hit me so deep, when our day is filled with constant frustration trying to Accomplish anything surrounded by clutter it can be really depressing, that said I never give up but reading your comment and your “wins” helped a lot, thank you and congratulations on your accomplishments :)

I said that backwards, “enjoying things instead of hating your days-hit me so deep” **enjoying your days instead of hating things** I personally have attempted {for a VERY long time, and exponentially more so since selling and moving from my condo into my friends home} have been attempting to on most days: enjoy my day(s) by organizing because I desperately need life to be easier in pretty much every area but end up hating things.. I’ll have momentum but decision overload and overwhelm starts in along with shock and regret of how much stuff I have and $$ spent and don’t see much visual progress often making a bigger mess so then I feel like I wasted yet another day and miss out on actually living life and making memories with those I care about. Sorry to get so emo on here.. but this has made me realize I’m doing to backwards I need to declutter the area , then organize it.. which is obvious now saying it but have been trying to just gather like with like so I can see the magnitude and be able to decide what to keep and what not to.. so turning a new lead and going to try to make a conscious effort to enjoy my day to day by trying to incorporate little habits to feel somewhat “normal” amongst the chaos.. I’m 31 and Deserve to enjoy my days instead of days of desperation and hating my things. Long novel but ultimately thank you! And thank you Dana & Dawn! I feel like small changes are happening and things are getting on track. ❤️

Checking inventory first to account for any needed or unneeded items, then declutter, reorganize if needed so stuff can go home easily, finally clean up the space - this was my take on what you were saying so next time it should be easier. Works in the bathroom, now for a look at my kitchen (again!)

The biggest thing that my family has taken out of it is my family enjoys helping. They don't fight me to pick up anymore.

Thank you for sharing this video. I have been frustrated that your house always looks perfectly "Better Home & Gardens" tidy. So I thank you for sharing the messy bathroom with us.

This was so helpful!!!!!!!! The concepts of putting the 3 steps together and reframing my thinking about myself and the frustration I feel is life changing. Your encouraging “can do” attitude helps me to believe that I “can do” it too. I love you too. You have changed my life for the better.

Holy crap, i have been so blessed with my renters. There are three guys and myself (female) using one bathroom and they are all so good at keeping public spaces so clean. Their bedrooms (at least two of them) are another story.

Dawn, thanks for the inspiration. We have a small bathroom with a tiny cabinet that is stuffed. I plan on decluttering and moving my back stock of toothpaste, soap, etc to my pantry. Need to declutter my closet too. 🥰

This video was *SO HELPFUL!!* I've always wondered why this same thing happens to me and you helped me realize that it happens to everyone! I just need to go back through the steps you mentioned and I can get it back into shape quickly. Thank you so much for showing your real life and giving great tips!

Great video that reminds us decluttering/minimalism is a journey & not a quick sprint. I cracked up when I realized Dawn was sitting on her toilet filming 🤣 She keeps it real!

I love the jigsaw of steps! You are right, Dawn, that at various stages one has to re-set/ declutter/ adjust for various reasons (as you've said: busy periods, new needs....). BUT it's true that once you have decluttered originally it really only takes a few minutes to do a quick re- de- clutter! That is what I have found so energising and encouraging! Delighted to get your videos and grateful for other people's minimalism inputs along the way. It all helps. G Ire

I agree with you 💯, Dawn! Inventory is the key. I noticed that the other day as I too, looked through my medicine bins. And my kitchen too. Somehow things have crept in that I need to get rid off. You are my inspiration, Dawn! 😊

My husband (great guy) just doesn't think this way, BUT, my home is still easier to maintain because I've decluttered my things and our general things. IT STILL MAKES A DIFFERENCE. 🤩

Thanks so much for this really practical advice. I am one of those people who feels like they are always asking "why does my house keep getting so messy?". This gives a really practical approach to break down the problem.

Through decluttering, organizing and becoming somewhat minimalistic our consumerism has changed, too. We hardly buy anything which won’t be consumed or replaced. Now we almost never have to declutter or heavily organize which I am so grateful for! (except kids related things of course since they are growing and changing a lot ;))

So true! This is the beginning of my second year with you and my inventory is creeping back up. I’ve been thinking for the last week that I need to go back over the house again. This was very timely for me, I thought it would just magically stay great when I decluttered and reorganized last Spring...now we’ve got to throw in the “maintain” step. I do feel like a clutter magnet. Thanks for motivating me to get back to where I was. You’re still changing our lives. Thank you! ❤️🙏🏻 Jane in SC

I've decluttered a mass of bath toys today, leaving behind a few which I cleaned really well, they weren't getting played with as my 2 kids were most likely overwhelmed, but I'm super confident that tonight they'll use what's there (ie. left behind!) because it's visible and looks more appealing 😊 it's always the way! Simple is best. Amazing video to spur me on with the rest of it, Dawn 💗

In a big family with 2 bathrooms we have benefited from moving things like makeup and hair supplies out of the bathroom to bedrooms. I have a small acrylic set of drawers and a mirror in my closet. My daughter has the same. It makes it much easier to maintain the bathroom. Just my 2 cents 😙

Hi Dawn 💕 Sometimes if I feel guilty about those one or two trial sizes I will squeeze the conditioner into our big conditioner bottle and body soap into the hand soap dispenser 😆

I agree, I've been and continue to stay on top of the decluttering and organising pretty much monthly to stay on top when I do my zone cleaning. I discovered in the Diane in Denmark and The Secret Slob, the fly lady app, which has helped me stay in a good cleaning routine while ticking off the list of what needs to be done as I go. So with decluttering, organising, maintaining and getting in a cleaning routine my home is finally staying clean without it all falling apart. 🙌

A quick tip for toiletry samples: store them in a travel bag--they can save you space in your luggage, especially on an overnight or weekend away, and the suitcase is usually sitting empty so you might as well store something in it. This will also cut down on packing time.

I like what you said about how areas change. With 4 girls 6 and under we have so many “changing seasons” in our house. Constantly hiding things from the toddlers, keeping things off the floor from the baby and still allowing the big girls to explore new things like you mentioned (hair products, small toys, ect) It amazing how quickly the balance can shift. Seems like we need to do each area 2 or three times a year!
