Wow! I really thought your "mess" would be worse than it was....thank you for so thoroughly sharing all the steps! And your new setup looks fabulous!!! I am creating a new office in my bedroom closet. It's a lot of work, but it's super functional and I'm already using and enjoying it. Lots of steps: painting, new shelving units, new shelves, get rid of closet doors, new curtains, new office chair, donating A LOT of books I never thought I would get rid of, nosy cat who is getting underfoot, nosy husband who is getting underfoot, emptying, consolidating, and SO MUCH heart wrenching giving away things. But, totally worth it, because the new space is going to look so calm and spacious.

Excellent Video! Forgive me for the intrusion, I would love your opinion. Have you thought about - Mahorrla Control Clutter Method (probably on Google)? It is a smashing one off guide for decluttering your home minus the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my work colleague at last got astronomical results with it.

First video of yours I've seen; already in love with your channel. I couldn't place your accent until you literally said where you were from- d'oh! I'm glad you mentioned, because not realizing would have bugged me throughout the entire video x'D Just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed this video. I may have a slight decluttering-video addiction... and irl-decluttering addiction... but I've realized that there's a certain level of quality that I appreciate in these videos that seems hard for some folks to balance, and you appear to have hit the bullseye, hence my instant subscription.

Thank you for this video. My office is ten times worse. I really appreciated the advice you gave. I'm going to take out all of my things just like you did and then really think about the idea of "Does this bring me joy?" It's not something I often think about. I also like your idea of categorizing the items and keeping them all together when you put them back in your office. Thinking about how the space is going to be used is also a great idea. I loved seeing the before and after photos as well. Thank you.

You're so lucky to be from Ireland! I have a lot of Irish grandparents, however, not close enough to grab an automatic Ireland citizenship, unfortunately. I'd still like to visit some day, though. People always ask if I'm from Ireland due to the way I speak. My limited office space is in my bedroom. I'm currently trying to gather all my office supplies and limit them to my Victorian era secretary desk. It's one of those roll top desks. I'm watching office decluttering videos for inspiration.

It looks wonderful! I have too many projects to tackle around the house but up next will be repainting the kitchen and cabinets. Maybe I can find some more things to let go of in there but it has stayed pretty good since the big konmari declutter last year. My problem is the end of my counter that always collects things as if people can't stand to see it clean LOL! Hopefully fresh paint will help the kids see it as a fresh clean space not to clutter up:) Great video as always, your cheerful personality is so uplifting!

A basket for "stuff" may help at least keep it contained (and maybe a basket of fruit as well). For us mail seems to travel and filter around the house, so having a dedicated tray or basket for that may help. (speaking for myself who has no dedicated tray for mail)

Oh my goodness, I'm struggling with that spot too, Lindsay! A clear surface is like an open invitation to my husband and daughter to fill it up as quickly as possible. It's a constant battle! I use my patented "box method", whereby I take everything off it, put it all in a big box, and stash it in a closet. Then, whenever I have a few minutes, I'll go through it and put some items away. It keeps the space clear (some of the time, at least), but doesn't require prolonged tidying periods. Anything that never seems to leave the box gets added to the 'donate' pile.

@HowToGYST
@HowToGYST 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I have to say, I did notice that the vast majority of what I got rid of was stuff I only accumulated SINCE moving here. So that's something! One of the biggest benefits for me is that, bar my clothes (which are between the closet and laundry room), toiletries (of which there are very few and all of which are in the bathroom), and a small amount of knick-knacks (which are in the living room), my office houses all my belongings. Handy to have most things in one place!

We found out at the beginning of the month that we will have to move also. We are rushing to clean organize and pack our things as we expect to be downsizing quite a bit and only have until the end of the month to complete everything. This helped me greatly with motivation. Now I just need to be able to let some (really many) things go.

I think the more you get rid of, the more you realise you can live without. There are things I kept from previous decluttering sprees that I now realise I no longer need. So just keep chipping away at it. Ever step, no matter how small, is progress. 😊

I have a desk that, honestly, made your "before" desk look pristine. Unfortunately, mine is built in and cannot be switched out for something that works better. I think that has been the hardest part when it comes to organizing it; the space doesn't necessarily work for me, but I have to do the best with it because I really can't change it much. I have cleaned it up in the past only to have it get bad again almost instantly. But, I am not one to give up, so that will be what I tackle next ... again. Thanks for the inspiration!

Going by category might be the best option for you. Break things down into broad categories (eg. papers, office supplies, books & reference material, etc.) Then remove one at a time and work on it before moving onto the next. When you're all done and the space is empty, then clean and re-organise the setup, and start putting everything back. 🙂

Thank you for your marvelous video! Great advice and mentoring as always! I wonder if you might like the cubicle bookshelf next to the office window placed horizontally along the adjoining wall to it's left, additionally possibly placing the unit of drawers to their left. The round mirror would then look great above that. Just a thought. Another option for placing the desk would be away from the walls, rather centralized in the room facing the alternate placement of the horizontal shelves. The chair and plant could then be placed in the corner to the left of the window or wherever it fits the best. Whatever works best of course. Looking forward as always to more more more videos! *Laura, please invest in some sliders to move furniture!

Oh, best of luck with it! I've tried putting systems in place based on how I use the office (eg. pens and paper nearby because I'm always scribbling notes, camera gear hidden away so I'm not looking at cables and things, most used notebook actually on the desk instead of on the shelves out of reach, etc.) Sounds like you're making great progress on that list! Lists are great because there's always an end. You can see your progress, and get the satisfaction of ticking things off. Go you! Let me know how you get on with your office. But think how satisfied you'll feel when it's done! Grab plenty of drinks and snacks and get stuck in. Maybe start by doing a quick sweep through everything to remove obvious junk and rubbish. That will make a dent straight away, and will give you a bit of motivation. After that just start in one corner and work your way around the space. It's unlikely to be done in one day so don't be disheartened if it takes longer. Just keep plugging away and you'll get there. 🙂 Good luck!

Most of the 'maybe' pile was kept, but some was dumped or donated. Even of the items I kept, most of them belonged elsewhere in the house so only a small amount ended up back in the office. I genuinely haven't noticed the white furniture being any dirtier than other furniture. Having said that it doesn't get a lot of "hard" wear like a dining table would. I find it perfect for my office though. The finish on it makes it very easy to wipe off any scuffs or stains. I've had the two cube bookcases for several years now and, apart from a few dings from being shipped, they still look almost as good as new. The only thing that I can think of as a "downside" is that they've yellowed a small bit with age. (But I guess all furniture fades or becomes discoloured with age.)

Very nice! Slide that palm about a foot to the left, would you? It looks a bit uncomfortable behind the chair, lol!

What did you decide to do with the maybe pile?

Most of it stayed (but a lot of it went to other rooms), and a small amount was dumped or popped in a donation box. 🙂

I like the placement of the mirror. I was going to suggest that you could get one of those easel type set ups and place your mirror on it without having to put it on the wall.

It would need to be a very sturdy easel because it's a heavy mirror! Hopefully we'll be home-owners (again) soon so that'll give me some more options. But I have to say, I really like where it is right now. 🙂

so do I. that's the first thing that caught my eye in the corner. sides, the more I thought of it, the more I thought it would take up more space than you'd like.

In feng shui, they say whatever is reflected in a mirror is multiplied, so hopefully some enjoyable time sitting in the chair reading is coming your way, Laura!

It's already been my way, and is just about to come back around. 😉 I love that it reflects the plant too. It's like my own little private jungle. 😂

I have a question, how do you deal with the plant you placed tucked in right beside your chair? I ask because it seems to take up space over the chair... I'm not explaining myself clearly. I would be constantly annoyed by the plant being touching my shoulder or my hair or blocking some of the wonderful light for reading, how do you deal with the plant when you read?
@HowToGYST
@HowToGYST 6 жыл бұрын
Good question! I actually turned the plant several times until I got it to a point where it didn't bother me and didn't block the light. That's why you'll notice most of the leaves are actually facing away from the chair. So it's still very close to me, but nothing actually touches me or gets in my way. 😊

Your office doesn't look so bad... 30 minutes of quickly going thru it, 10 minutes of dusting/cleaning, and a good carpet cleaning and you're done

I think the key word is sets here, Sets of Crystal. Sets of linens. Sets of sterling. Sets of Waterford. I am trying to sell since children do not want!

Remember that just because something is a set doesn't mean it can't be separated. If you only love one piece, keep it and let the rest go. If you're having trouble selling, donate. Let someone else love and look after them, with the added benefit of increased profits for your chosen charity.

Do you live with your Mom? If not, toss the stuff and tell her it's your home and not a dump. Hopefully she'll get the point. Kathy B.

Yes! No point re-organising junk. 😉 It really helped me to take everything out of the space. Obviously tiring and time-consuming, but it made a big difference and helped me see things a lot more clearly. Do you have a particular space you want to tackle first?

Always a tough one! Get yourself as comfortable as you can, and have snacks and drinks on hand. Take regular breaks too. It will be a long process. As long as you're prepared for that, and you know that you'll definitely get to the finish line if you just keep plugging away, you'll be fine. 🙂

I have no idea, unfortunately. They were left over when my in-laws moved. Ditto the mirror. They let us choose items we wanted to keep, so I chose those. The chair and footstool are actually filthy and in need of a really good clean. I'll probably have to bring them somewhere because I don't think that's a job I could do on my own. Not without ruining them!

The mirror and whiteboard should be hung on a wall. Not functional as it is.
@HowToGYST
@HowToGYST 5 жыл бұрын
The mirror, for me, is more decorative than functional. As for the white board, when I use it I usually sit on the floor, and I like to use both sides so it doesn't make sense for me to hang it. Besides, it was a rental house so we weren't allowed hang anything.
