Thank you so much for sharing your tips and your struggles too. As far as I can remember, I had never been able to get rid of stuff even if I always lived in small places (as a kid, a teen and an adult). It's always been a nightmare for me to start cleaning up, because I was always full of hope that I would gain some space and toss things away... In my younger years, I felt so bad at the end of the day that I couldn't throw what my mom thought was useless. Then as an adult, I would even cry at the end of a tedious cleaning day when all that was in my garbage bag was be a T-shirt and 2 sheets of paper. Then last year or so, I found you and I followed many of your advice. Watched and listened carefully. Started cleaning while listening to Konmari's audiobook... And now, I can now proudly throw bags of stuff without suffering from it or regretting, I am even eager to do more ! I'm so thankful for your videos in which you don't make clearing space and decluttering a drama. Your good mood is a proof that minimalizing our amount of stuff doesn't make us dull and depressed : you're so refreshing. I relate to so many things you say, and it makes me laugh (the green buckets dilemma !!!). Looking forward to watching more of your master closet and be inspired ! à bientôt ! amitiés, Julie

My garage is the the toughest space I tackled AFTER the clear out of my moms house when she passed away. At least half her stuff still came with me and I am just now starting to get out from underneath all that clutter and sentimental items and able to start on all my own excess. I am still in the middle of decluttering. But I just finished my garage last month, 33 bags and boxes were donated from that! I was/am so proud of myself. Thanks for being an inspiration. 😊

This year we moved from a home that we lived in for 44 plus years. It was an absolute nightmare. I found things I didn’t know existed. Most things went to donations and the rest the trash bin. I now try to be as minimal as possible.

And that is exactly why I keep going thru our stuff and whittling down. We have been in our house for 30 years and just paid it off! Yay! My husband says we are never moving. So we just keep fixing this one up, and decluttering it. I do not want my kids to have to clean up a cluttered mess when we die. lol Congrats to you for surviving the move!

That's what happened to me when we sold our 17 year old home. It was awful. The house sold the first day so we had to stay at my mom's small house. We filled up her basement and two large rental storage units, and that was AFTER I decluttered before we put the house on the market. NEVER again. I have been decluttering since we moved to our new house but I'm not finished. We don't plan on moving for a long time and I'm determined to never have a move like that again!

I don't know much about konmari but have you heard about fly lady? It's an enjoyable method of clearing clutter and controlling chaos where you don't try to do everything at once and get burnt out but work with smaller portions and in smaller increments of time, again, so you can enjoy your work instead of getting tired out.

My hardest area is our spare room. The stuff in there multiples ten fold. It's alive, I swear. I only have a handful of items that would even remotely need an iron. Hee hee. Everything gets hung up or folded immediately after coming out of the dryer or off the drying racks. I don't like ironing.

I'm going through this now because we are down sizing.It not the " stuff", it's the memories that are attached to the "stuff".You will always have the memories of that certain time or event in your life.
@HowToGYST
@HowToGYST 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, and that's exactly what I realised. I still have the happy memories, so I don't need the skirt making me feel like I've lost something when, in reality, I've gained so much more. So it was time to say goodbye to that silly "sadness" and just remember the good times. 🙂 Best of luck with your down-sizing! Are you moving home or just minimising your possessions?

Well done! I feel you pain and frustration here. The worst spot I ever decluttered was a corner in the attic of my parents’ barn. I had been using the space to store things as a young adult between years at university and different living situations. So it became a dumping ground of things not needed in each stage and many things became forgotten. I’ve tried a few times to go through everything but never got very far due to time constraints or children who were too young to be left for very long. Well, the stars finally aligned this summer! We packed up the family and went to visit my parents for a whole week. I made it my mission to be ruthless and get rid of as much as possible. But it was a slog and it was hot and it was dusty. There’s nothing quite like “barn dust”. It’s a mix of hay dust and probably decades old animal dust... All said and done I’m glad I pushed through because now it’s done. We’re finally buying our first home and moving at the end of September and I have a small little “keep” pile waiting for me still up in my corner of the barn attic. It’s all stuff I really want and I can’t wait to put it to use in our first ever home that we actually OWN. I’m seriously giddy! So thanks for putting out great content and showing us how it’s worth the frustration and sore muscles!

This was my break from cleaning out my master closet and spare room closet and dressers. Been working on it for a week as I had let it get out of hand and didn’t realize how much I really had till I pulled everything out and categorized it all. So taking my time and trying everything on and taking breaks when I feel overwhelmed. Going through all the pain and joy you expressed. Thanks for sharing and helping. I folded all my socks with your take of the kon Mari method and when done I was so happy with the results. Did all the undies too. Now working on workout stuff and trying to figure out best way as it will be going into a deep drawer.

Excellent job, yeah you! Really felt for you in this video, you looked like you were struggling. Try not to be so hard on yourself. Bags, shoes and clothes are 3 huge catergories, even if its just in one smallish room. Def small chunks is the way to go.But perfect timing, to keep me inspired. I just went through my closet yesterday. I have a set number of hangers (too many still) and when i can't hang all my clothes, usually after trips home, I cull by the number of new things i bought. With the clothes that don't fit, I realised by the time they do, I'll probably want to wear something new.So ive starting being ruthless
@HowToGYST
@HowToGYST 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that was definitely me when I did the KonMari Method. Now I've started to re-kindle my love of clothes so don't mind owning a few more, as long as they all spark joy. 😉 The plan is to whittle these down though, as they get worn out or ill-fitting or whatever. I don't think I'd ever be able to go the "capsule wardrobe" route, but I'm definitely looking for a more "core" wardrobe, if that makes sense.

Great video. I'm not into fashion and shoes, so I have a minimalist wardrobe of clothes. But it was good to see the categories and how you went about it. With the sentimental skirt - maybe make something of it? A cushion cover or background to a photo collage of the time? As for the rental and no up hanging stuff... try stick up hooks. I use them and they work well.

We're about to buy a house so we're waiting until that goes through. Then we'll no doubt start sticking things up everywhere. 😂 As for the skirt, I finally realised that, overall, it was actually making me feel bad. So it was time to say farewell.

Something that I use for hanging things on the back of doors is those racks that hook over the top of the door. I'm in uni, and I hang my towels on it after the shower and also have my every-day hoodie and my 2 purses that I use regularly on it.

Hi! 😁 Most of it is a mental battle. You'll want to give up a million times before you're done, but just keep on trucking. Put on some music or a podcast or audiobook if it helps (though I'd recommend pausing it while you're actually deciding what to keep).

Thank you so much for this video! You've inspired me to do the same with my own bedroom closet. Mine is barely 1/8 the size of yours, but it will still be quite an undertaking because it hasn't been deep cleaned since before I had my first child 4 years ago. I will learn from you and be sure to start earlier in the day. Your story about your skirt really resonated with me. I too have things I'm holding on to because they are a visceral reminder of a wonderful time in my life that is now over - even though my life now is better. Thank you for sharing the story. It's a reminder that keeping the object around can ultimately impact us negatively, even if the memory it evokes is a good one. Also, that Rainbow Brite shirt is everything!

I've worn that t-shirt twice this week already. 😂 Isn't it strange how we hang onto things like that skirt? It was a big revelation to me to realise that it actually made me feel bad. I have all those happy memories in my head and heart and, like you, have a great life now. I definitely don't need to cling so tightly to the past when the present is so wonderful. Best of luck with your closet! Do you think you'll pull everything out of it? I've found that's the best way to give it a good deep clean, and also to reduce the risk of clutter going back in.

I always find the *garage* the most difficult space to declutter and organize. That's because I live with my boyfriend and another roommate, and we use the garage for longer-term storage. For example, I have my yarn stash in there, in weatherproof, mothproof containers. Anyway, it's not a large garage, so the three of us have it packed pretty full. My goal is to pare my stuff back significantly over the next couple of months because I am going to be moving at the end of the summer.

Sharon, my garage depressed me. I have a husband and 3 sons and a daughter, and the garage was dirty, greasy, and full of tools and junk. It faces the street and embarrassed me. I cleaned it up several times. My husband said the garage is supposed to be dirty. Then we got a new driveway. I suggested we really fix up the garage, to go along with the new clean driveway. He went bonkers, and cleaned it all out! He painted the floor, the shelves, got rid of a lot, and hung up the rest. He even got a nice new toolbox. It looks fantastic now and I am proud of it. There is always hope!!

Hats off to you, Laura! I've never had any trouble decluttering a physical space, but packing is a nightmare for me! I'm currently watching as a take a break from the 4 hour packing session for my study abroad semester. I want to bring the least amount possible, but realistically, I'm going to be gone for a month, and I need outfits for as low as 10C and as high as 35C. Honestly, your closet does not look as bad as other closet declutterings I have seen. It must been overwhelming taking inventory of everything strewn around the bedroom, yikes! You did a great job putting things back together. Everthing looked more organized and neat. The seasonal stuff is best to put away. I've been decluttering slowly but I think the tough part is the clothes I like but doesn't fit well. Also, I need to take a hard look at the bags and wallets I own and streamline more, they're my weakness. 😝 Btw, the skirt seemed to have great sentimental value and maybe you don't have to get rid of it since it doesn't take up much space. Anyhow, this was fun to watch. I think we can all relate to the process you went through. Thanks for sharing! 😊

How to Get Your Shit Together , I’m totally with you on that, Laura! I recently went through the “Decluttering my Fantasy Self” process, and finally let go of the parts of my Interior Decorator wardrobe that hadn’t been worn since I had to go on disability in 2009. I’d been holding on to my favourite pieces from that time, but with chronic illnesses now being the Center of this chapter of my life, those items were a depressing reminder of who I used to be. It was shocking just how much of my space was/is filled with stuff for the life I used to have, or the dreams I no longer aspire to. Clothing has been done!! And kitchen. But ugh, the papers.... hahaha

😂 I feel you on husbands leaving clothes all over the bedroom floor! My husband’s side of the bed is right next to the bathroom and he tends to leave his clothes from the day right outside the bathroom door. Bad news for me since I go to bed after him and almost always trip over his stuff trying to get in and out of the bathroom! I think I’m going to try your trick and put all his stuff in a decorative tote next to his bedside table. So at the very least I won’t injure myself at night when I’m trying to go and brush my teeth!

i totally get the item that symbolizes a good time in life...bringing joy from the memory...letting go is hard.Clothes are hard for me for this reason. only things that bring joy are the things that no longer fit......letting it go seems like im some how giving up onthe possibility that I could one day fit in it again and get the"good feelings back"....i need to start this again and go through the keep until this date which was months ago......and just get it done.....knowing there will be nothing left if "spark joy" is the gauge.

Please tackle food storage! I need tips! In regards to the clothes you're attached to, if you have the space my mom used to keep her favourite clothing items in storage for me and as I got old enough she would gift them to me. There were a few misses but some of those have become my favourite items! I'm 22 now and she still passes things along to me and I love it. It's like Christmas!

Yes, I have a storage tub in the basement with some items of sentimental clothing. 🙂 But I finally realised that the skirt only really made me feel sad. Up until that point I had thought it brought happy memories. It was very cathartic to say goodbye to it.

Your closet looks great! The worst space for me is the basement and I’m not even remotely finished. I moved in two years ago and have already been through it twice. On the bright side, it is nowhere near as bad as the full to the rafters basement of the house I had lived in for 20 years. That was scary!

Hi Laura, what a big job. You did well. I got rid of all my pants which didn’t fit and bought some new ones. I keep going through and paring down all my clothes. People tend to wear 20% of their clothes 80% of the time according to experts. True! Sentimental clothes are hard but it is freeing to let go of them and it makes way for new items and frees us from being stuck in the past. With Sam’s clothes, can you spread them out a bit more and put them in categories? This might help him to see what he has and wear more of them. I do this with my partner’s stuff with his permission. He doesn’t get why I do it but he doesn’t mind and I think it works well for both of us. After a recent review if his trousers, two were donated, one went for alteration, and he’s wearing things he’d forgotten he had! Keep up the good work. I enjoy your videos. Thanks! 🌸⭐️🦋

Congrats on your big job, have you ever considered using command strips ? They are rental friendly. Hey I have a question for you. I have a big walk-in closet, with three rods( left, right and one on the deep side as you look straight in closet) How would you use the KonMari method ? Going from long and heavy to short... I am puzzled. Please help me out here. Thanks.

Great video and job well done👏🏻 The key is patience. My husband puts his spare clothes on the floor, right next to our sock drawer which top is always empty. I keep putting his clothes on the top of the drawer as I don’t understand why clothes has to be stored on dusty floors(??) and now he seems to be getting more and more used to the drawer instead of the floor😉

My biggest trouble was with over sorting my shirts: color/ fabric/sleeve length. The whole point of having an organized closet is to select an outfit quickly, so I now sort by color only, keeping the navy blue far from the black. I also had trouble getting rid of my career clothes, but the minute I accepted that I didn't need nice clothes and a corporate paycheck to be someone, I realized my own hot-shitedness and progressed from there. If you need a reminder for yourself, I think 39,000 KZbinrs and a slew of people on Facebook are grateful for your current career. You can work on food storage and the entryway simultaneously. Reshuffle items as you put groceries away, and look for inspiration and shop for the entryway now.

Well done on getting this far. I wonder if the depression was about facing up to the sheer quantity of stuff you have acquired? I'm no minimalist, but how many short-sleeved grey and white t-shirts (for example) does anyone need? If you ever move back to Ireland you'll need a whole room for those clothes.
@HowToGYST
@HowToGYST 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think I own 2 of the same item. Maybe 2 white t-shirts. The rest all have images or slogans or something on them. So even though they look similar, they're actually not. 🙂 The plan now is to wear as many of these as possible in the coming weeks and eliminate any that are uncomfortable, just don't fit properly, that I'm constantly tugging at, get worn out, etc. So it'll be a process of whittling things down over time.

I'm glad that the suffering throughout the process was worth it in the end :- )) It's beautifully organized now :- ) The closet is the toughest category for me - I don't like most of my clothes anymore (and/or they are worn out) and I would be happy to get rid of most of it but I can't because that would leave me with literary not enough stuff to wear :- ) So I have to get new clothes first but that's a long and expensive process. That ironing part was very relatable :- D
@HowToGYST
@HowToGYST 6 жыл бұрын
It can definitely be a bit of a process, but I think the longer we hang onto old stuff, the more "comfortable" we feel in it. I know if I decluttered all but one t-shirt, it would motivate me to go out and buy at least one more. So it may be a case of starting the decluttering process before you've officially bought replacements. 🙂

I love your Rainbow brite T-shirt.Wow you have heaps of shoes and bags and shoes.I only own 10 pairs of shoes including slippers.I have 5 handbags and 5 tote bags.I have 7 pairs of long pants/leggings ,4 skirts,4 capri pants,5 jackets,10 dresses,9 cardigans,6 jumpers,3 long sleeve tops,and 10 t-shirts.Thats all my clothing apart from underwear and night wear as in pajamas etc.So total 58 hanging items in my wardrobe-pretty good since we live in Australia and the temperature constantly varies.I have done the trick of turning all the hanger hooks the wrong way round and in 6 months if the hanger has not been turned the right way round (by using the clothes,and re hanging after laundry)Then all the clothes on the wrong way hangers will be got rid of by donating to thrift stores.What do you think of this idea?

It makes me happy Laura that you are not one of these militant wives who think they have the right to go through all their partner's stuff and throw out their possessions without their permission. I know a few ladies like this and I get so sad for their husbands who feel as though they cannot have anything sacred in their own home. When it comes to clothes my husband does all his own washing and ironing and tidying and it's bloody great! 😎 A lot of women want to know my "secret to swinging that one" 😂 xx

How to Get Your Shit Together My secret I think is "don't start doing his laundry." It was one of my non-negotiable conditions when I moved in with him after we got married, I told him "that is a level of intimacy I do not need in our marriage". 😂😂😂 We have never done joint laundry apart from towels and linens. It works out better for both of us - he is more efficient in life generally and I am pants at ironing and he likes wearing shirts to work. He also has a blind spot for reading care labels and checking through thoroughly what items he is including in his wash. (He was not popular after he washed a pair of silk-mix trousers belonging to me at 40 degrees by mistake).

I would have put Sam's shoes on the bottom shelf to the left of his hanging clothes. That way there is nothing on the closet floor, which makes it easier to vacuum. Did they have Command hooks in 2018? Because you could use those to hang your straw hat, dressing gowns, and artwork. They can easily be removed without leaving a hole in your wall when you move out.
