I help my friend Janet declutter a super frustrating dumping ground. This was a live video so it's vertical and I interact with commenters some. All the strategies we use are explained clearly in my book: www.aslobcomesc...

This is the kind of decluttering video that is ACTUALLY helpful! Despite what the creators say, "montage" videos are not helpful. Despite what the creators say, a pile of clothes on a chair and throw pillows not strategically placed is not a cluttered house. I'm so sick of creators making these useless, offensive videos clearly just to bring in the views. They spend more time bragging over their clean, organized mansions, then giving us quality content. Dana, YOU are quality content! Thank you so much! I'm moving long distance in 5-6 months and I cannot begin to express how needed this video was! Love you!

Don't have a "Keep box" because it's just a procrastination box; instead, immediately put the item where it belongs." "Put things in the first place where you would look for them if you needed it." This is important. Thank you for all of these tips.

A keep basket is a good idea if you get distracted easily. If i tried putting away every single item one by one, it would take me forever because i would start doing something else while i was away from the decluttering scene. But once the basket is full, i would have a break by putting it all away.
@Fiery154
@Fiery154 3 жыл бұрын
@@thatswhatisaid8908 I thought that too. I get easily distracted too. Just today I got distracted by helping my daughter clean a damn stool with a toothpick! But I have so many “keep boxes” all over my house. Then I’d go through the keep boxes and sort them and spawn 3 new keep boxes. They flipping multiplied! Take it there now, is helping me get things where they belong.

I turn my laundry basket (empty of course) into my keep basket. It keeps me focused by not having me go all over the place and getting distracted, but since I have to do laundry, I must deal with what is in my keep basket. It doesn't have to be right that second, but it does have to be done by the time laundry is afoot.

I've been doing the dishes for 2 days. My sink is also the first place we see when we come in the house. My donate pile (that I actually do work out of the home), is in the space most people sit when they stay at my home. I had usually justified not doing the few dishes we had, because it seemed like a waste of water to me. But I do like not having them there for the next time we go to use the kitchen. Plus... I always have a work space ready, and a clear counter for all the things we pile to get ready to GO places 👏👏

I bought your de-cluttering book a few months ago (clued in by the Minimal Mom) and it has been a game changer! I've been working on de-cluttering intermittently for more than ten years, but your system is the first one that made sense to me. My problem has never been how to organize my possessions, it's been "how do I identify what is excess stuff and what do I do with it?" Mucho thanks!

Just an aside: “PS Your not listening” is a good book. It is the story of a teacher who took on an assignment to teach a class of special children who had been declared ‘unteachable’ by others, she knew it wouldn’t be easy. It is an insight into her journey to connect with, and teach these children. The font on the original cover of the book was chosen to look like a child’s hand writing and was based on a note left for the teacher by one of her pupils. Thanks your video. Your simple method works wonders!

I have SO many boxes, containers, baskets full of "keep items" full of things that I love, but I never made a decision of what to do with them (aka where to put them) so they just ended up in my storage room, or in the back of the closet to "deal with later) um, I mean, never dealt with again. lol. I loved the bent nails!! Obviously the person with the garage sale had no idea because it was a hoard item OR they couldn't manage to let them go... so it is easier to let someone else do that! Sometimes I give things to someone close to me to throw out because I (and they) know I just can't do it yet. Or, like this week, I ask my loved one to "decide for me" when I know it's rubbish but just can't bring myself to lock in the actual decision myself.

I second what D Popper said. Dana, your audiobook is LIFE CHANGING. I have never heard someone talking about decluttering and organizing in a way that is so easy to absorb and implement as you. I bought books by the Flylady and The Slob Sisters, but unfortunately they didn't have audiobooks available (I don't have time to sit down and read a book when I have so much cleaning to do!!). I did see that it seems that they may have eventually made audiobooks but it took so darn long - i really could have used those audios 20 years ago! I have listened to your audiobook about 5 times already, while cleaning my house, and I have to say, it is very easy to listen to and very motivating. I'm really picky about audiobooks, and tend to gravitate with the ones where the speaker has a pleasant, upbeat tone, is motivating, empathetic and funny, and you nailed it. I'm like you - I was in theatre and when I get involved in a project I go ALL OUT, but that tends to make housework kind of fade to the foreground (my friends and family would probably call that an understatement). I just want to tell you thank you so much for creating your books and audio. I bought your audiobook on managing your home, and plan to get the decluttering one next. I sent your website to a friend of mine, who got the decluttering book, and we were both raving about your work and comparing notes. You've really made an impact on those of us OCD workaholics who are trying to change the world with our work, but have been struggling with the housecleaning. It's making my life a lot easier. Thanks from the bottom of my heart, you are a Godsend.

I am delighted to have found you and have already obtained all your e-books and been binging on your videos. Several aspects of your decluttering and organizing resonated with me so much more than other channels or authors that I have been recommending your KZbin videos and books to a like-minded friends who also sturggle as I do. I am a 70 year old female retiree, living alone in a 1 bedroom high rise apartment which should make control of my environment that much easier, even though I am by nature a collector, repairer, and stockpiler. There are however, sometimes impediments which create disproportionately large problems which I am having trouble resolving. For example, I have never had a driver's license, nor do any of my few friends still living in this city. I don't know any of the regularly changing neighbours in my building, and I don't have the funds to take taxis to donation locations. Sadly, although they claim to want the items ... no charity including Goodwill, Sally Anne, Value Village, or smaller independent thrift shops will pick up clothing, books, household items, furniture or whatever, from my residence. Similar to the City guidelines insturcting citizens to deliver certain recycleable items like old paint cans, batteries, etc. to specified sites, there is no allowance made for anyone without access to a vehicle (other than looking very nervous when I admit to being a non-driver and slowly stepping away from me like I'm either insane or contageous). It is very discouraging to finally be ready, willing and somewhat able to make progress decluttering, only to be forced to either toss all new or serviceable items in the building's dumpster, or give in to my abhorance of wasting money and 'useful' things and continue to hang on to stuff I should and would finally be willing to part with. Am I wrong to feel that I am being unfairly thwarted by the universe when I finally try to do my best?

I always think I can use that for a craft. Then when I’m de cluttering I toss it in the trash. Then later I’m on Pinterest and I see 101 things I could have made out of that thing. I say to myself, “that was then and this is now”. Meaning that person that saved craft stuff cluttered up my house. This is now, meaning, “this is the person I am now, who doesn’t want to live with that craft person who cluttered up my house.

Thank you so much for sharing this concept. I play your videos while unpacking my boxes in my new place and I never would have been able to do it without it. My place has less storage and I always got more external storage wasting money cause if you hide it and it appears tidy I thought that that worked until it didn’t. Your concept is breaking that habit of mine. Thank you sooooo much.

Dana, you are hilarious! I love how we think alike and struggle alike. I love how you don't shame people like Peter someone. No guilt. If there's space, it's all ok. I am going to try your method, and even go and buy your book. I am so glad I got to meet you through Cas! You go girl!!! And your friend did a phenomenal job❣👏👏👏🎉♥️🏆❣

Indianne G I don't have any mason jars for canning and I'm reading a book on this subject. I've only found 2 boxes of half gallon jars, but a walmart employee who I know has said to get the app bc it will tell me what's in stock in other stores in my area. I'm in Temple Tx but I could go to Waco or Killeen for this stuff too.

Oh this is so funny! I'm listening to your book on audible and I'm at the chapter that talks about decluttering. You mention that you had so many plates and decluttered because only used a few. then I remembered about the red plate you just HAD to HAVE in this live youtube video. I can totally relate... you make me laugh. :-)

This was so inspiring. When I looked at the cluttered spot, I felt overwhelmed just as I do when I look at my own most cluttered spots. But you got it completely decluttered. That gives me confidence that even my most challenging places (e.g., the back basement room) will eventually yield to your method. My dining room (an easier spot) has already yielded. Yay! So I'll just keep going until I reach everywhere.

@@debbietampasheher3682 on my days off i try to do what i can. Unfortunately I have a few injuries that make my mobility difficult to do as much as i was able to before. When I can't move one way i change the shore I'm doing to a different one even if i cant finish either i still try to do what I can so i don't feel useless. That in itself when i couldn't move made me feel worse! The pain was horrible but feeling useless really beat me down even more! Even if it takes me the whole day or have to use a cane in the house to get things done i will.

@@marjoriewalton7598 I could be wrong, but that sounds more like a communication issue. Perhaps personalized zones could work in your favor. That way, if something is in your zone, it is safe from pilfering. Hubby and I eventually developed a version of this that works decently well. We still have hiccups, hence my previous comment, but we're getting better.

I have a stoy to tell from today! I did a deep clean on my kitchen. My husband is a clutterbug/hoarder if u wanna call it. The black trash bag is my friend. He forgets about things til i throw them away... Anyway i was sweeping up the last luttle bit of trash on thr floor and he sees something in the dirt. What is that? I picked it up and it happened to be a lettwr i wrote to him on our 4 year wedding anniversary. Well i decided to keep it bc its special to him and i found a place where it could nicely go without being clutter. Although it was a little dusty and i honestly thpught he had it still in his wallet where he kept it for so long, its just a small folded piece of paper. But the point is that my husband has a hard time letting go or he inspects things if i start throwing things away. I normally do it when hes not at home 😂
