Years ago a lightbulb went on for me when FlyLady pointed out that a lot of procrastinators aren't lazy or don't want to do stuff, but that they don't want to do anything that isn't PERFECT and so they are actually perfectionists. That sooooooo rang true with me. I've now tried to accept the "progress not perfection" mantra and it's working though I still fight the desire to have the perfect container, the perfect arrangement of things, the perfect whatever.

Love the tip about the "dust line." I was watching a show featuring a woman who hoarded clothes, and when the assigned organizing expert pointed to her closet and asked her how many of the items in it she wore regularly, she said, "at least 99%." I had to chuckle to myself, because there was a layer of dust about 1/8" thick on most of the clothes in that closet.

Yes! It really helps minimize the overwhelming feeling. Much better than making lots of big stacks to take to their "home" elsewhere. I explained this concept to someone the other day when she was helping me declutter my living room: look for "like items" or things that need to go to the same place (example- came across a box of nails. Looked around briefly and saw the measuring tape and some picture hanging hardware) and take them to the hardware shelf now. Combining a few of the skills I've learned from Dana and Dawn: like things with like things, a home for everything, take it there now, touch it ONCE. Why go through the large pile/space, create more, smaller piles in that space, feel surrounded/trapped, then have to move those new "mini piles" again!
@katiegleaves3792
@katiegleaves3792 Жыл бұрын
That's one of the few things I learned from my parents when I was young (a similar version of "take it there now") they'd say "never go empty handed" which went along with what we called "as-you-go's" -those are a small/manageable pile/stack of things that need to be taken elsewhere (books to be taken from the living room upstairs to the shelf in your bedroom, etc)

I heard another good tip: don't use an over-sized dirty clothes hamper. This person said she used to use a huge hamper, but by the time it was full (and overflowing), it would equal 3-4+ loads of laundry, and then it would be overwhelming. By using a smaller dirty clothes basket that equalled only about 1-2 loads of clothes, she was much better at keeping up with the laundry. Maybe that's sort of a reverse twist on the container concept.

I found your book, "Decluttering at the Speed of Life," at my public library some years ago. After reading it, I listened to it multiple times on the library's audible program. Your ideas about the container method and decluttering-as-you-go were exactly what I needed to hear. At the time, I was ill and (attempting) to work full time, but your book gave me the determination to declutter my hoarded home and get rid of the storage unit we were renting. Despite my body's lack of energy, I became emotionally and mentally energized by the act of decluttering. I'm all better now (!) and not quite done decluttering yet, but have come so very far. My first big win was decluttering a hoarded-to-the-ceiling room and turning it into a simple, minimal guest room. Within days of it being complete, we had guests in there! Anyways, I wanted you to know that I was very excited to see you join up with my other two favorite KZbinrs and develop this course!

I personally can’t cope with Facebook organising groups. I don’t like it when people posts lists of what they’ve done - 10 loads of laundry, emptied & loaded the dishwasher, cooked 3 meals all from scratch & things like that. I’m much better doing things at my own pace. By the way, I love your sense of humour. 😀

I love camping, and camping gear. I could outfit a party of 12! I’m the only one in my family who likes camping. I usually go by myself. The thing about camping gear is that it’s all really useful and really cool. That’s what makes it so hard to get rid of. I also paid a whole lot of money for some of it. But one person doesn’t need 5, yes FIVE tents. I’ve been through the gear once, and I’ll be making another pass soon. It will become manageable eventually. Thank you.

I’ve noticed a few on the Facebook page who seemed overwhelmed. I started the the beginning on January 1. I listened to and watched everything, but I have yet to get started. Granted I’ve done some decluttering and organizing over the summer, but I have not yet worked along with the course. I’m a procrastinator if you didn’t catch on to that already. Hehe 😁 Anyhow, there are those who jumped into this and have made extensive and impressive progress, those who are freaked out about getting started, and then there’s me...who figures I’ll get around to it soon. SO I guess what I’m trying to say is there’s no rush, it’s not a race. We’ve got 12 months to watch, listen to, and read all this information over and over. Our homes didn’t get messy or cluttered overnight, so we may need some time to get going. Progress is progress no matter how fast we go, as long as we’re moving forward. 🙂

Then all I have to do is take them to my closet and hang them there. It also saves on wrinkles on the clothes.

We are moving south after 21 years in this house and the things I’ve learned from you are working PERFECTLY! Container concept, taking things where they belong right now, and not pulling everything out of the space while decluttering are working GREAT! We are not moving for several months so just getting everything sorted out and keeping just what we will be moving in the closets, drawers, etc so when we move all I need to do is box up everything that is in the house is going to be easy! I’ve been selling, consigning, donating, throwing away as I go and it’s working great and it doesn’t look like we are moving YET! We don’t have boxes and “stuff” everywhere. Once all the spaces are totally clutter free and some of the furniture is sold by word of mouth or on marketplace, then I will box up anything in those spaces or put in other empty places that now have room. It’s so much easier to sort through and make decisions when everything is fully decluttered, organized, and like things are put together. Example......by the time I put all of the coats, jackets, gloves, and scarfs from all of the different places from all over the house into 1 closet that they could now fit in because we got the DUH clutter (Dana’s words) out, we could easily pick what we would take with us (not much because no more winter weather 😎🌴😎🌴😎), what was consignment worthy, donatable, or needed thrown away. When bags are filled to take to consignment, donation, they are put in my car and when I’m out they get dropped off. Now wha5 is in that closet is only the things that need packed! No decisions need to be made when we are ready to pack up and will know what size container they will all fit in! That closet now has a ton of room for more moving stuff when Its boxed up and ready. BAMM! Read her books and blogs, listen to her podcasts! I had no idea how much all her suggestions had stuck until I was putting into action! It was mind blowing! Thanks Dana! EVERYTHING is a container! 👍

My difficulty is that my weight fluctuates about 20-25 lbs in a year ( I know!) so that means for me 3 sizes of clothes, plus I live in Michigan so I need winter and summer. I first decluttered, then I did the Kamari fold method ( HUGE game changer! It’s not about more stuff it’s that I can see every shirt and quickly find the one I want without messing up the drawer ) and put them large to small in the drawers ( I keep a smaller amount of lg. because I don’t want to encourage myself to stay there lol). In the closet I keep what I’m currently wearing and allow one tote for each of the other sizes, I don’t want to see anything I can’t wear today. I wear dress clothes a few times a week plus gardening/project clothes, nice casual, cleaning/lounging. It’s a lot to keep straight so I’m always trying to par it down! Thanks for the tips!

I was listening to this while going through my closet and came to a pair of pants with dust on the crease. Huge, 8 years of dust. Just as I picked it up, you said "if dust, donate". I'm laughing out loud and the pants went into the box. Thank you!!!!

Dana... you are my spirit sister.... I can soooooo relate to almost everything you talk about! I get so overwhelmed that I get up, think about all I need to do and sit right back down again-- I hate when someone tells me I HAVE to do something NOW. I have stuff in drawers that I have NOT OPENED IN YEARS!!! Stuff in closets that have dust half way down the item!! But your suggestions seem so doable. I'm going to start on your tips TODAY and make my home a better place to be...

Yes! The planning, I can so relate. Unfortunately my daughter is exactly the same way. I have learned to stop the constant planning and make myself do progress but now watching my daughter plan for 3 hours drives me crazy now because just like me she plans for hours on end but then only carries it out once or for a few days.

About folding… I do fold my clothes, pretty much the KonMari way... but I’m not sure if that frees up space. I like it because it looks neat and most of all it enables me to see what’s there and not have to pull something out from underneath five other things. I love that! But that certainly doesn’t take the place of sifting and sorting what you actually like and use :-)
@beccismith4454
@beccismith4454 3 жыл бұрын
@Hooked Otaku Although I actually also like sorting more or less by color, dark to the left light or to the right or dark in the back lighter to the front depending on my storage space and what it is.✨😊 I have my sweaters on a higher shelf and I have a way that I prefer to KonMari’s for bulky things - I spread them out and fold the arms in so that it makes a box shape and then I thought the bottom up so that it’s even with or slightly overlapping the shoulder and neck line. Then I flip it and roll it like you would roll a carpet. I store them so that you see the “need“ end of the roll. If I have worn a sweater and don’t need to wash it yet, and put it back, I store it so that you see the “bottom“ end of the roll and that way I can tell what things I’ve worn and what not and maybe pull things when I do the laundry. 😃 No, I don’t do laundry every day. With one person I just don’t have enough stuff that it would be even worth it!
@trudisabaj2741
@trudisabaj2741 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the KonMari fold is great for tank tops and T’s because the line up in a row and you can see the top “spine” of each one. Makes finding what I want easy. But getting rid of what you don’t need is indeed the ground-zero logic to declutter!
@beccismith4454
@beccismith4454 3 жыл бұрын
@Hooked Otaku that’s funny, I don’t manage usually to fold them with the images on the front! Because then the neckline has to be out, and that feels not as strong as having the solid sides on the outside :-)! But I have few enough that it’s really not difficult to know what’s what, and I don’t have so many with prints on the front. 😄

OMG, I am ROTFL! I lost it when you pointed out the dust line on the hanging clothes. I have been procrastinating for weeks, should I vacuum the shoulders, or should I rewash them all? You are so right and have saved me a ton of time. I am old, have raised 3 kids, inherited stuff from multiple relatives. Why didn't I think of that?

I love you! I am a planner. I have the habit of using all my energy making lists and looking on Pintrest for the best systems. I scroll through Amazon for magic products. I listened to both of your books back to back and hearing your voice automatically motivates me now. My house used to get so cluttered that I would use a giant dust broom to push everything from one end of my open floor plan to the other end so I could pick through the pile. Now every time I drive into town (I live in the foothills) I load my car with stuff and drop it at a local thrift store. I declare 2021 as my year to create better habits for myself and kids. Thank you for the effort to put into helping slobs like me. ♡♡♡♡♡

As someone who uses one of the folding techniques I can say this: some people use it to put more things in their drawers or baskets but that is not the only thing that can be accomplished with it. It really helps to see the clothes easier as they make everything visible all at once since there are no stacks which makes selecting what you want easier. Also, it actually makes pulling an item out without messing everything else up easier since the folded shape usually makes the clothing settle into “slots”. Some techniques are simple and some are more involved. Anyhow, they can be helpful but to each their own. Do what works for you. Thanks to Dana again for a great video on a topic that is much needed!

I can relate to the "I'm gonna do a load of laundry every day" *remembers and comes back to a mildew load that needs a vinegar rinse* I'm more of a streamliner/efficiency/adaptability corner cutter person than a planner. Planning stresses me out too much. Time is money, energy and health to me. My top priority. Routines are nice. They don't give you decision fatigue. I keep about two weeks of clothes and do one in one out.

I am that crazy person who does the t-shirt folding and it has helped my marriage so much. Lol. My hubby has like a million t-shirts and his dresser drawers used to make me hyperventilate. Now I have all his t-shirts folded neatly standing up so he can see what's in the drawer and doesn't make a mess looking for that one 20 yr old t-shirt that he hasn't worn in a year but knows it's in there. 🤦‍♀️. And rolling all his undershirts and boxers was life changing. No more messy drawers. No pun intended. Lol. Love your videos!

I’m in the current Take Your House Back and not on Facebook. Today I was contemplating making an account JUST to be in the FB group…..then I remember why I quit FB-it’s easy to get sucked in and overwhelmed. That equals less decluttering time for me. I’m glad I fell upon this video today because it helped confirm my hidden angst about getting back on FB--even though I planned on ONLY being in the TYHB group.

Some people I know decided years ago that they needed to move to a bigger house. They loved their house which overlooked a park in a quiet street but it was just too hard to keep organised. In preparation for the sale they started going through their belongings and decluttering. At the end of that process, they decided they didn’t need to move at all. They saved so much money and stayed in the place that they loved.

Once i realise my kids laundry baskets are full of dirty clothes, i will declutter the clothes in the closet and dresser because those are the clothes that they are not choosing themselves and it makes it easier for them to put away there own clothes.. I have also told them if a piece of clothing doesn't fit to place it in the donation box i have. They are 9 and 6 years old. Both girls. I turn around my husband hangers so after few months he can see what he doesn't wear. That makes it easier to declutter his clothes. I use different methods for all. Lol

Two gems of information. 18 minute video - at the halfway point, 9 minutes, she gets to the methodology of decluttering Drawers: Start at the bottom of it (the top of the drawer has the recently used items). Brilliant. If an item in the drawer is in the wrong place, take it to its 'real' home NOW. If the item belongs there but you haven't used it for an extended period of time, into the donation box or the trash it goes. At 14:18, the second gem: Closets - if any of your hanging clothes has a dust line along it, you only 'think' you love that shirt. The dust line evidence gives clear evidence that you haven't worn it in an extended length of time-put it into the donation box now. Same thing for as you're putting your clean laundry away, if it won't fit in the space, use these 2 fantastic steps to declutter.

I just want to say thank you! I've been decluttering for 9.5 years but I still have stuff and seems to keep coming back. I've been in a rut for years. I could get my house party ready and be messy days later, leaving me burned out and overwhelmed. I read your first book in a day and it has changed my world. I've started doing 5 minute pick ups with my kids and they've been helping 😲, my husband has been making the bed without me asking him. After dinner everyone has been helping clean up leaving us time to play a game together or free time. Thank you I needed your honesty. When you said that there was no special remedy just my own will it clicked. Million times thank you.
