Over time I've discovered that the real key to decluttering was to stop bringing stuff into my house that I don't really need or love. To learn to want less & stop buying junk you don't need is life changing

Thank you for being real and not another woman re-organizing or cleaning her already clean, organized house ! I love your ideas and sense of humor.

You really are creative, fascinating and hilarious! You are also smart, well spoken and relatable! I am binge watching all your videos as I am going through piles, boxes, bins, closets etc and am enjoying your company. Everything you’re saying is helping so much! I watch “Clutterbug” and “Minimal Mom” and saw your collab and now am a fan of yours too. 😊

It helps me so much to see you go through this process repeatedly in different areas. I see you make decisions on things I have delayed deciding many times. I am now building the habit of asking, "Where would I look for this first?" The progress is real!! Thank you!!

I love your ideas. The only one I can't do is take the item to its place right then. I have really painful knees so I have to walk as little as possible. I do stacks to go to similar rooms, since I'm retired, I don't get as many interruptions as all of you with kids.

I got your book a week ago "Declutter at the speed of life" and started reading last night. Today I got to the room by room section and started on my front entry porch, and already have a full bag of donate and half a bag of trash and my front porch is done! Thank you so much for all the inspiration and "real" help to get through this. Tomorrow I tackle the living dining room! Thank you again, Terri

I just saw this and thought what else can I minimize? I had a basket with miscellaneous, coins, pens, hair ties, receipts, bills. I went through them and put them up where I would look for them. Now I had a small/medium basket emptied basket to work with. I have more counter space without the junk basket. I repurposed it to house my curling irons, straighter under my sink. It looks so much more streamlined!

I love that you fixed the necklace right then!! I so would struggled with what to do there! You are so right even if I had got distracted it would have been so much better! But I know me and if I didn’t do it right then I might as well trash it! So smart! So glad I saw this video!

Great video ...I had to comment .... great point about just reducing what you have really helps with overwhelm...I had mentioned in the comments on another one of your videos that I just took a load to the thrift store.... My goal this time in decluttering the garage was to reduce my crafting stuff down to 70%. The garage is basically done, now, I've got some paperwork I've got to go through but it looks 150% better. And I realized this point was a very needed element in my de-cluttering this time... I actually had to tell myself a "percentage"in order to get past the overwhelm. AND in doing so....this helped me get thru those item battles...you know the ones..".I don't really like it, anymore....BUT, I might NEED IT....and, in the end, you realize....'it's okay to let go'.

@kevinanddeb88293 жыл бұрын
I used to clean out drawers and always seemed to put just about everything except the definite trash back in. Then I cleaned out my kitchen utensil drawers and my bucket by the stove. I ran all of them through the dishwasher then put them all in a plastic box on my counter. As I used items I put them away in the drawer. If I was using them a lot I put them in the stove side caddy. After a month I had identified easily what I use and what was left with very few exceptions (turkey baster, candy thermometer) I got rid of knowing I just don't use that stuff anymore! It worked so well!

'People that struggle with clutter....tend to be very creative people. We're very creative. We're super interesting.. and fascinating.. and fun. And hilarious too.' So true, Dana. You are all those things. But it really is true. A creative mind wanders and thinks into the future and asks what can I create from this. How can I re-work it. I think you're right, Dana. I have bouts of self- hate and cry to my daughter that the house is a wreck because I'm a lazy slob. And my daughter says, 'No you're not, Mum. You're an artist. You have thoughts and ideas in your head all the time.' (I'm a writer) So I sit around, spending time in my head, creating characters and plots. Meanwhile, the house falls apart and I live in terror that a visitor will show up unexpected.

(I’m the wife of the name listed) I found your channel after seeing you with the Minimal Mom. I am loving your decluttering videos. We moved about a year ago into a house that is literally half the size of our previous one. I am loving living with less! I am still getting rid of stuff and hoping some of that runs off onto our kids. My youngest is very creative and has tons of legos, clay, and art supplies. He makes things out of any and everything. I have introduced him to the idea of the donate box. Hopefully it will stay a donate box and not become another project for him. Lol.

Great video! I will open a drawer or work on too much and feel so overwhelmed 😟😲🤔. This video really puts "clutter" in a manageable perspective. I have to fight my perfectionism all the time, and my son said the other day- Get real and just put away items and organize better when you have Time! Makes total sense.

I have only just come across your channel and I’m already addicted. Just a quick one on your questions that you ask yourself which I think are soooo key, what if you don’t have a home for it or a where would I look first. My whole house is cluttered and unorganised so nothing really has a home. And in regards to where would I look first most of the time I scramble around the whole house causing chaos. Any help ❤❤

Those necklaces that went in the trash, you could donate them because people might buy them for the beads to make new jewelry :) I just went to a Red Cross thrift shop this week and bought necklaces only to cut them apart to reuse the beads. :)
@DanaKWhite6 жыл бұрын
I had to cut it to get it apart, and the beads were going everywhere! Otherwise, I probably would have done that!
@Gullbra1Kisa6 жыл бұрын
I would just put it in a little bag, the beaders will put it in a little ziplock bag or a plastic container. One of the most fun things I do is sort the beads haha. I don't mean it as criticism, more like a pointer for maybe next time :D just something not everyone realize :D by the way thank you so much for everything you do! I love your book and your videos

Me and my husband wouldn’t be able to use anything in that drawer. We would open it, look at it, freak out, and slam it shut! We are just super visual and with everything just tossed in, we would be way too overwhelmed and would see nothing. However, using Cas’ organizing styles I also know just sticking a few dividers or open top bins in there and making categories on labels would fix the drawer for us! (I wrote this when showed drawer half way through, not realizing you weren’t done!)

Hey Dana. . . I'm new to your methods but I'm intrigued!! I have a question about what happens when asking yourself the second question, what if it's an item that I know that I have but wouldn't have a clue what pile or drawer I stashed it in therefore I'd probably just go buy new rather than go searching for it?
@FoD19755 жыл бұрын
According to the book, if you wouldn’t have a problem buying it again (because either you wouldn’t know you had it, or because you wouldn’t know where to look for it) then it’s Trash or Donate. Hope that helps ☺️

How did you know I've spent the entire time, May 10-22, 2019 pulling everything OUT, and trying to toss, put together like items, then return ONLY what I use into each bathroom, and YES, today I AM STUCK. Multiple boxes (over a dozen), most of them full, sitting around the floor in what will become my guest room; stackable drawers off to one side, some of them short height, some of them deep height, and both sets unassigned. This is a critical moment of indecision. I am LMAO at your text over comments about making decluttering sane, finding OXIMORONS!!! what fun! I live near where the migrants cross the border, and don't know how to donate used stuff to them, the neediest of us all; wish I could spare sending all the "used" stuff from the land fill. Any suggestions?
@portiaread94843 жыл бұрын
Laurel Bracey, I’m reading this a year later, and I hope you found a place to donate your extras last year. There are two places in my area where I can donate . My church used to have big quarterly thrift sales before COVID, I used to save it all for those times. Ugh. Big piles in the garage or basement. Dana is so right on. Get it out of the house. We have two thrift stores and an organization for freebies for people in need. Maybe there’s a goodwill store or St Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army. I found a local nursing home that loves to show residents old classic movies that I donated. These days I have a donate box in my garage and I drop off stuff at the thrift store in town whenever I’m driving there. Hope your journey is going well.
