Thanks! I have a personal rule helping clients go through stuff - even if they don't want it, I can't keep it either. The highlighters in this video were hard for me because I'm a big highlighter fan - until I had that conversation with myself that I now highlight Kindle books online and don't actually use highlighters any more myself either. We didn't test them and we donated them all. 👍

I use Post it notes every week. I stick a note on the inside of the front door to remind me to take something with me or to give something to the person who takes me grocery shopping. When to make sure that I return something to the library etc. If the note is on the front door I can't miss it. When I tried doing that on a Whiteboard on the fridge I would end up forgetting some of the important things I had to remember to do so the Post it on the front door turns out to be the best option for me. I have to go out the front door so I will see it. I used to use Highlighters weekly when we used to get a TV listing booklet in the weekend newspaper. I used the bright yellow one to highlight the programs that I wanted to watch, movies etc. Now I have a TV listing app on my phone. But there really isn't anything worth watching on TV any more so I don't really bother except to scroll through it once a week. I do use those metal clips for chip, cereal and other food to keep them closed. Tape, well you never know when you will need to tape something.

Thanks so much for adding this. So my question is how do you know when you have enough of these items? This little box was sitting untouched for 8 years in a storage unit by this homeowner we are working with. If these are all useful, every day items, are these excess?
@galaxywanderer
@galaxywanderer 2 жыл бұрын
@@AskAngelaBrown Well I don't keep tons of Post it notes pads but I don't think that I will run out of them within 2 years. The clips I have I keep in the cutlery drawer in a cup. When I open a bag of chips or cereal I put it on the package and use it until the package is empty then put it back in the drawer for the next time. I have 6 of them. The Highlighters went away to wherever the trash truck takes them. Tape. I have 3 rolls now. If I ever need more I can always buy another roll at that time. I really used to stock up on bright yellow highlighters when school supplies would go on sale. I just don't need to add any more of these items to what I already have.

Hi Betsy, We had a conversation about this in the office this morning. One member of our team still uses post-it notes and highlighters. The consensus was though that most of us here have also changed the way we operate online for business and most of our "supplies" are in fact, a thing of the past. You're not alone, we all have our own decluttering to do. Thanks for watching.

@@AskAngelaBrown I use post-it notes everyday, but really only the larger ones 4” x 6” with lines to take notes and write lists, like shopping lists and To Do lists. The normal sized post-it are too small to write a list. I can’t quite say why those expensive lined post-it notes work, but they really work for me better than anything else. Maybe each page holds just enough information, but not too much.

I love office supplies. We have an office supply store in our village and it's one of my favorite places to be. In my defense I do use them. But, boy, do I have lots of them ;/ If anyone needs a specific color of ink.....I've got the pen. It's a relationship with color that I've got to work through. There's a "Creative Reuse" thrift store in my town. It is great to have a place to donate all these things. Volunteers and staff sort things into bins. I feel better donating 90% of my envelopes, because I know when I need some, they'll have some from somebody else. Same with wrapping paper. I donated so much, and ribbons, etc. Gift basket-baskets. Pens, rubber bands. They sell this stuff, and the money all goes to the school district. They even take CD-ROMs and the jewel cases. My library has a seed donation cabinet. So my half-used garden seed packets I can donate. I really like these aspects of my town.

I agree with the binder clips you can even use them on bags of frozen vegetables when you buy the big bags at Costco and then don't eat them all at once. I have some really pretty post it notes that have pretty little flowers and they have a hard cover case and they even have a little slip case that you can put them in like how you put a collection of books in it. I do use them occasionally, but like you said they're kind of out of style. By the way, I did use your "if I don't I won't" message last night to clean out a box full of nail polishes. This works perfectly for something like that. I said to myself " if I don't like this color, then I won't use it. " This enabled me to get rid of a lot of nail polishes that I have never used and most likely never will. So this method even works with little things and it works beautifully. Thank you again Angela.

I am still using post-it-notes daily to serve as “urgent reminders” along with making to-do-lists at work & home. I don’t have a lot of office supplies….. about a pile or two of post-it-notes & I keep them in my desk drawer, along with pens and a few clips. I would have organized the post-it notes in the clear box by stacking them by size before putting them away. The problem with texting reminders is that if you have too many texts it ends up like an overcrowded e-mail inbox and things get buried! This system works so well for us, I haven’t transferred it to technology and probably won’t.

I have never used post-it notes to send a message .. My doctor uses tons of them! .. each visit he scratches on one our plan for my health (instructions, referrals, otc meds to try, etc) and hands it to me to take with me. I like that he does this even though his handwriting is barely legible (guess thats just a doctor thing! 😉) Plus i personally use post-its as page markers in my planners and books. The notes have gotten very pricey (and the cheap dollar stores don't adhere to any surface very long at all) so to double my use of them i tear them down the middle to make two of them, making sure both pieces have the adhesive on them. Post-its live on forever! 😉👌 And i agree with 'Elvia' who recommends testing all pens, highlighters & markers before donating .. the places we donate them to just don't have enough time to do that with every batch of markers they receive.

I believe that they are not the most environmentally best way to create notes. Still however I use a lot of them and scraps of paper. My goal now is to use a white board to write notes to myself which can be wiped away once the message has been addressed. Right now, am working on a bit of decluttering around my home.

Go Ken. I love the way you are looking ahead at ways to replace what you are currently using for something more environmentally friendly for the long haul. Thanks for sharing this. 👍

It might be nice to find out what your local donation center can use and what they’ll just throw away. It causes them more work and drives up their trash bills to donate items they can’t sell. I’m pretty sure that most donation centers have to toss insane amounts of donations that are not sellable for them. I can’t image what donation center would want to sort through half-used random pencils, pens, and highlighters. It would just get chucked. Maybe a local school could use them if they are still good.

A school would be an excellent place to donate them. Thanks for the suggestion. 👍👍👍
