This is the ideal time to buy shelves for storage, before the garage starts getting fuller xx

I loved that you were able to organize without spending any money. Slowly you will start to buy shelves and hooks etc. but in the meantime you have an organized clean neat garage. As you go along you'll have a better idea of what extra storage you need and want. Thanks for sharing.

So with my garage I like to keep the footprint / floor totally empty by custom building shelfs that I call " free real estate. I use 1/2" plywood ( 3/4 ' is overkill )and shelf brackets. Lowe's rips the sheets down to 12", 16" or 24 " depending on the shelf size I am building. Having them do that makes it possible to get them in the car with a little bit handing out the back. My lowest shelf is 48 ' above the floor leaving the foot print more free. For storage boxes I use all the same size that are moving boxes from Lowe's . Using miscellaneous boxes ends up not taking advantage of the shelf space and looks to " busy ". The medium size moving box is about 10 " tall. I space the shelfs at about 12" That way I can get the maximum number of shelfs as I build up. With " store-bought " shelfs you will end up with less shelfs as you end up with extra space above your boxes. They also use up the foot print. The boxes are great because they have cut outs built in to grip. Then every box get's labeled . Plastic boxes are good also as you can stack like boxes and see what's in them. So every sheet of plywood gains is 32 square ft. of " free " space. The area below the shelf is used for hanging my items. Start with a 1 x 4 mounted on the wall. Doing that makes it easier to hang hooks, ect. without worrying about locating wall studs. At times below the shelf I will use the space for bulking items - like garbage cans, lawnmowers ect.

Ur gonna hate me, but u need to move table insert inside. Garage temps (hot summer/cold winter) mess with woods. Slide the table insert under ur bed, or u can put it in one of the office closets. Mine is under my guest room bed. This way it won't crack or warp (both solid & veneers woods) in garage.
@AshlynneEaton4 жыл бұрын
That’s a great point!! I’ll definitely move it indoors 🤍

While it's fresh in your memory...write on the cans of paint which room or what was painted with it. Trust me...as time goes by...you'll forget. I would also suggest keeping your extra chairs and table leaf in your home. Garages tend to get much more dirty and dusty and are exposed more to the temperature changes which can be harmful to the wood furniture.

The paint thing is such a good idea! Need to remember to do this too once we finished one room and move on to the next one!

Shelves will definitely be a worthwhile investment. I will also suggest that though it may not feel like a priority now paint. Garages tend to be put off over and over. Paint will help protect the drywall, make it easier to keep clean and finish the space. It is worth spending the time now rather than having it be a bigger job later or nag at the back of your mind for years as a "I should really get around to it" thing. And think about getting a cover for the chairs... You'd be surprised how much incidental damage and dirt/dust stuff stored in the garage can accumulate.
@annetteelder-clark5054 жыл бұрын
On last comment... never store paint near your water heater. It is flammable. Also, paint changes with hot & cold temps. Now is a great time to hit Lowes or Home Depot & purchase a utility shelf. Put tools on one, paint supplies on another, Christmas decor on yet another. Ur a smart cookie & will figure out ur storage system but you need to move items out of the water heater corner. Better safe than sorry. Both my brothers are fire fighter/paramedics & have lectured me about not keeping anything near gas fed hot water heater. Plz don't take my busy body ways as a criticism... just want ur new home to stay safe.🙂💜💜💜💜

I would store your table leaf inside..... I'm an hour & a half form you in Greensboro so our weather is very similar...my leaf, over time, the wood expanded and contracted due to the moisture and humidity. The leaf was almost a different thickness of the table when I went to use it over time also the corners started to split...it broke my heart...Just a heads up! Congrats on the new place! Love your content!

Congrats on 200k! I would not store anything too close to the hot water heater as it is a fire issue. Also, definitely move the table leaf and chairs inside. The change in temps will destroy them.

Love that idea! If we hadn’t been painting Christopher’s office dark blue (we have white carpets) I definitely would have looked into that! But I just didn’t want to chance any paint at all seeping through. Definitely with keep that in mind for the future though!

@@AshlynneEaton I've never had a problem with seepage. We used it when we painted navy blue as an accent wall in our old place, and we had light carpet too. No issues. Just so you know, it does work. 😊
