I'm curious to know if Kathy will go camping again because I think it wasn't really her (or her husband's) cup of tea. They were roughing it though, so maybe they'd like more of a resort type of glamping.

I had a full service for 12 of my grandmother‘s china, complete with all the platters and serving dishes, plates, cups, saucers, soup bowls, etc. No one in my family wanted them. Before we moved from Illinois to Washington state I selected one cup and six soup bowls to keep and got rid of everything else. I use the cup to hold some daily jewelry pieces and I use the soup bowls for whenever I make myself a salad. Selecting just those few things, and USING them, made it very easy to get rid of all the rest.

Great video, you 2. My Mom has been gone now for 6 years. I am the only daughter out of 4 kids and I ended up with all the fancy dishes etc. I relate to your Mom and all her fancy dishware etc. It’s like I am its caretaker whether I want to be or not. Shannon & Kathy, Great video. When I started decluttering, I started in the kitchen. I couldn't believe how many duplicates of items we had. My Hubby & I got rid of 400+ items. That led next to going through other rooms of our small house. In 2024, we decluttered my sewing / craft room & in 2025, we hope to decluer our bedroom. We just do it slowly & as we have time. Kathy, I enjoy your approach to decluttering. Keep it if you want & declutter it when you realize you don't want to manage it anymore. 😊

I've found I can't help others declutter, except with ideas that helped me. Attachment issues are personal. One has to be ready. Decor wise, II like to use flowers and edibles (fruit, squash, etc.) that are used or discarded when we're done, with no need to store them). This year has been stressful and I'm skipping decor all together. Every year doesn't have to be the same. I guess I'm not tied to tradition. I have a wide ribbon on my closet rod that separates the worn but clean clothes from the pristine items.

@Heather.C.ButterflySage14 күн бұрын
It definitely took a while for my mom to come around to the notion of decluttering. When she realized she was in control and could make the decisions, we just took the easiest spaces first (kitchen, bathroom, pantry, fridge, freezer) and then moved into the books, closet, photos MUCH later in our so far 2 1/2-year process. Even sheets and towels and ancient small bars of soap were challenging, and I was patient with my questions and suggestions of who they might be able to help, that someone else could get use of the items AND she could free up more of her space in the home. It's been a fun and bonding experience, also, because we are spending time together, chatting away, sharing memories and philosophies and laughter.

I’m like you Kathy, I don’t change out decor. Like you said it comes and goes too fast. I buy seasonal paper napkins and cocktail paper napkins from the Dollar Tree and a seasonal candle and I’m done! I got rid of all of my decor and extra silk flowers. If I want to make a new flower arrangement, I just go buy them. It is soooooo freeing! I am finally at the stage where I only have what I use. Of course, things creep back into the house but I immediately declutter. Love you two!!❤

I have purchased silk flowers at Thrift stores and in reading your post was thinking maybe I should do the same of getting rid of them and just buy fresh, but realized that doesn’t work for me as scents give me headaches. So I guess we each need to figure out what will work with us individually. 🤔Actually considering getting rid of our extra coffee mugs and just having disposable ones for when friends come over (which isn’t very often). We do have a Bible Study group of 10 people that meets in our home every week but they only ever want water so we have glasses for that night. Thank you for posting. I like to review what others do.❤

Peter Walsh has a very respectful way of encouraging those he helps to declutter, about how they handle deceased rellies things. If you keep it all, none is special. So see what you have overall, from each person. Pick the ones with the most memories, or that are hardest to let go of. Store them in a shadow box or displayed on a shelf, where you can see it.not stuffed in a drawer. Or us it for everyday eg plates etc.

I’ve been decluttering for about 3 years too. The majority of it is done. Now I do it seasonally starting with clothes and seasonal items. I only buy something new when something old breaks or wears out. Even then I really think about whether I need to replace it or can do without. 🩷
@wendyeskelin876515 күн бұрын
@@lalablotz7348 Same. I've gone through several areas several times, each time letting more and more go, which helped me start using things I hadn't in awhile. I got to where the only areas that weren't done were my husbands areas, but then we sold our 2nd house, and while we got rid of 75% of it, we still kept several things so now we're starting over figuring out which things we like better and letting go of the extras. I'm still probably keeping too much, but I'm sure it will go on another round or the one after that :) I'm also focusing more on making sure what I do buy is something I really want or need.

@@wendyeskelin8765 Oh boy, I have been through the selling of the second house thing. We sold our lake house and luckily the buyers wanted all the furniture! But we were still left with all the other stuff. Then we sold our main house 6 months later and built our current house. Basically we decluttered 2 houses at the same time. We got rid of 3/4’s of it then after we moved in I continued to purge and eliminated probably a 1/3 of what we brought with. I’m sure there are plenty of Woodstock photos around or better to listen to the music unless going fancy dress. What do you do with fancy dress/ artistic things? Use it as a bag handle? Sorry, it's taken me all week to get to this video; I usually watch them the day they post or the very next day. Dealing with stuff, I won't get in to all of it, other than it's under control. This was a very good Q & A video - my favorite kind - where ALL the questions are gathered ahead of time by writing them down. I hate the Q & A's that are live, where the Tuber is trying to find questions to answer by scrolling. There is Nothing entertaining about watching someone stare at a screen while scrolling, looking for a question. I don't even watch that style. Note - on mom's Barbie Doll - I have a couple of Pinterest Boards for that specific purpose. One is Childhood memories and the Teenage Memories - lots of pins of toys/books from my childhood and all the favorite items from my teenage years. A place to keep them without the clutter and it still brings back great memories and good feelings.

As the holidays go through out these next school months I have been donating fall clothes, Halloween clothes as I go through months. Next Christmas clothes. I love how you two work together. My sisters and I laugh n make jokes when we help move things or sort together.😅

Your video is great! I can so relate to your mom and her journey. I continue to declutter little by little as my energy and mindset allow. Can’t wait until I get to the maintenance phase!

You two are so fun to watch. Great tips and advice. I was wondering how old Shannon was when you started helping your Mom declutter? Have a great day ladies.

Love you two. I have a small 2 bedroom condo and am here alone most of the time. I make greeting cards, and have for 22 years. I have purchased so much, rarely giving away or selling any of the older supplies. People tell me that I should sell the cards, they have gotten much nicer as time went by. Now I am thinking about moving across the state to my daughter's area in a couple of years, and am really thinking about not taking much with me. I can buy card making kits, and have a couple shoe boxes with cards already made. I hired someone to help me re-organize that "craft room" -the second bedroom, and hate that I spent so much money because I could NOT motivate myself to do it!

You are not alone. I was the same, but with scrapbooking supplies. Lugged all that heavy stuff every time we moved. I simplified and gave the supplies to schools, churches, the Scouts, etc. They loved it and made use of all the materials. That made me happy. I don't think about the money anymore.

A few years ago my parents actually sold a bunch of stuff they had in storage sheds to an online auction. The only problem- they pulled out everything “they” thought may have value and wouldn’t let the auction place even look at them. All that stuff? Yeah it’s still just stashed around. My mom said a month ago I gotta get rid of this stuff I don’t know what to do with it. It may be worth money. I was like… that’s what the auction house was for. Sometimes…. Then there’s me with the dressy shoes I bought 6 years ago and have never ever worn.

For Thanksgiving my MIL was talking about her china set she uses from her mom when we all get together and didn’t know who would want it since she only has boys. I immediately said, “Not it!” My SIL said she would take them.

I’ve even decluttered my photos on my wall , as dusting is the chore I hate since doing this my living room feels so much bigger I have a few photos but the majority are put away ( I live in a hud building and we get our apartment inspected by management every so often because some people are so cluttered that they can’t get in to the apartment with things blocking the walkway

I’m currently decluttering my dvd cases I bought those dvd binders and am transferring my dvds to those I kept the liner notes for the movie and put the actual dvd in the binder it’s much easier than having all those cases piling up. Also I’m transferring the tv series I own to a binder as I’ve noticed that those cases aren’t sturdy enough and the dvds don’t stay locked on the holder I think it’s much more convenient to have the DVDs in a binder than all the cases

Yes! I've had all my DVDs in a binder for years now and it is such a space saver.
@reginabeasley87215 күн бұрын
@RaeC5280 yes and you can see all of them at once hey back in the day we organized our photos in an album so why not dvds and cds ( those are next on my list)

We did the same process with the CD binders and kept it that way for years. This year hubby put all the CDs on an external drive that connects to the TV and sound system. We now listen to music much more often. The CDs were put back in their cases and given away. So far we don’t miss any. 🤞

I worry that my young grandkids will be disappointed that I didn't keep interesting old jewelry, or clothing or items belonging to my parents and grandparents. I imagine sitting down with them as they look through things and get excited about an item that ties them to their ancestors.

They probably won't. But if in doubt, just ask them. If they are children still maybe wait until they are adults. 😊

I’m having a hard time letting go of some larger Coach purses that my parents bought me. Now that I am retired, I only use crossbody purses. I tried selling them at a yard sale, but people want to buy them for $5. They are all in excellent condition. Have you sold anything on eBay and was it worth your time?
@SpeakTruthBeKind15 күн бұрын
I had several quality Coach purses that I really wasn’t using and decided to donate them to a “Thrift” store (Union Gospel Mission) in our area as the money from the sales goes to giving the homeless a “hand up” out of that situation. They also put a little higher asking price on some items like those. Donating to a non-profit also gives you a tax write off so ask for a receipt. I always feel better about giving up items then. Of course I offered them to my Daughter-in-laws first. 😁👍🏻

@ Great idea to donate to a thrift store that does good for the community. I will also ask my daughter in-laws and friends first too.
