Very cute! I love the polka dot ribbon! I made one with those penguins also and I had trouble figuring out how to attache them. What I ended up doing, that worked well, was to hot glue a pipe cleaner to the back in the middle and then I attached it to the wreath with the pipe cleaner. Nice job, love the colors!
@UnderATexasSky
@UnderATexasSky 10 жыл бұрын
Carolee Wolf Thank you for the nice words. Great idea on the using the pipe cleaner to attach the penguins. Using just hot glue with something as heavy as that is a problem for sure. I love the ability to get so creative with the deco mesh- things that aren't necessarily traditional seem to be getting more and more popular. The mesh works great for both!

It's very pretty!!! I have tried a couple of ruffle style wreaths. I have used the 21" deco mesh and cut them into 10" squares. However i have a difficult time making the ruffle they don't turn out nice at all. Is it because of the 21" deco mesh? or is it my technique in squeezing it together to make the ruffle? Please help!! Let your camera helper know he is doing a great job. I like that he focuses in on what your doing which makes it easier for us to see exactly what needs to be done and how. Thank you keep those tutorials coming eager to learn from you.
@UnderATexasSky
@UnderATexasSky 7 жыл бұрын
Sandra- I'd guess your difficulty is from using the 21" mesh. The 10" mesh rolls have 2 finished sides that make the ruffles hold their shape. I think using the 10" will be much less frustrating. There is still some raveling but just trim them when you're done and don't stress too much about it. Your filler will make up for it! Thanks so much for the kind words. I'll be sure to tell The Mean Man that you complimented his camera work! Blessings- Kelly

I am in the process of making my first wreath ever. I have watched your video at least 5 times. It is great. I ordered my deco mesh online but I am not sure I got the best kind. My wreath certainly seems to have more "strings" than yours. My proofing needs improvement also. If you have any suggestions on how or where to make sure you get the best mesh I would appreciate it. I am finishing up on my ribbon now. Thank you so much for the video. I love your wreath.
@UnderATexasSky
@UnderATexasSky 9 жыл бұрын
flscraplady Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm so glad you're giving wreath making a try! As far as the quality of the mesh you use- I find that the type I purchase online tends to be a better quality than you can buy at the local craft store chains, but they still will fray... and sometimes appear thin. I try to remedy this by just adding more ruffles. I also try to be super careful when I'm shaping the ruffles- I just do my best to trim them as I go. I've also been known to just touch the ends of some pesky places with a tiny bit of hot glue. Now, if you're not needing a solid color, you can purchase "premium" or "delux" mesh that is more pliable and easier to work with. But they tend to be striped. Paper mesh will fray as well as the poly burlap, but they seem to not be as bad. I've used the 21" poly burlap and done the pouf technique with wonderful luck and no fraying since I'm not cutting the mesh. And remember- you have a much more critical eye about the work you do. Others seem to be much more forgiving and more impressed with your creations. I hope it turns out wonderfully! :)

Wow, I am officially addicted to your videos!! Thanks to your "assistant" for recording your crafts, you both seem to make a great team. I love the way you blend your colors and how the black and white polka dots works amazing! I cant wait to see another video! Do you do craft shows? I cant believe how fast you can create this beautiful works of art. Question: When you add the ribbons on after you finish adding the mesh, I know you place the ribbons to the twist the mesh was added to first but do you open your twist all the way and place ribbon on top of mesh or just add to the loose twist and place on top securing the twist more tightly closed? I hope I am asking this question correctly, Am I making any sense? I am just confused if you open the twist all the way why not add all the layers at the same time? Thanks again, As always, you leave me speechless. 😊🎄🎁

Gina- I've so enjoyed your messages!! Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm not quite sure what you still need answered- but I buy my wreath form with the twists already attached. I don't buy them at the craft stores- the quality is just not the same as buying from craftoutlet.com. I prefer the fluffy twists so I can incorporate them into my wreaths. And when I add ribbon- I DO open the twists all the way. This makes the twists just look better instead of a gap between the mesh and ribbon. You can certainly put all of your ribbons together before putting them in the twists. I generally do this. You'll find that the more videos I've made, I get better at my technique. :) This is a great lesson for everyone... your first wreath will not be as good as the ones you make later on. You'll get better with every one you do. And I actually don't sell my wreaths anymore. It's just expensive to make and ship the without charging a ton of money for them. I just can't charge $100 + for them, plus working full time also and running my blog leaves so little time. I hope you also check out underatexassky.com for other ideas. Thank you so much for making me smile today! Blessings- Kelly

Kelly ... first let me say I really enjoy your videos. I have watched several on KZbin and I like yours the best. I am wondering if you have a problem with using the hot glue? In a few of the other videos I have watched they said not to use hot glue because if you put the wreath on a door that gets a lot of sun the glue will get hot and melt and your embellishments will come off. Have you had that problem?
@UnderATexasSky
@UnderATexasSky 9 жыл бұрын
+Deb Dear Deb- Thanks so very much for watching and kind words. I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos and are finding them helpful. I have always had a fear about this happening, but I've never encountered it. I live in Texas and it gets hot as blue blazes here and my stuff always hangs on. But I will say that if I'm connecting anything with weight, I try to secure it with zip ties or floral wire. I might use hot glue on those things to help with positioning but always try to add support with an additional securing method. As far as flowers, leaves, and small ornaments.. I've been ok. I do always encourage people to be aware of hanging their wreaths where it's subject to the elements... if there is no porch covering the sun can bleach out the colors and the rain can make a mess of things but as far as getting hot enough to remelt hot glue... I've not seen that. I hope this helps! Blessings! -Kelly

Hello kelly! thanks for the video, you did a great job. I was wondering if you have done a rustic deco mesh yet?

Dalia- Thanks so much for watching! You know, I started thinking about it and I don't think I have any pics of a true rustic mesh wreath that I've made. I've made country wreath- one in particular underatexassky.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Country-Chickens.jpg. If I were thinking of a rustic wreath, I'd definitely go with the poly burlap mesh and maybe a gingham ribbon (the gingham sackcloth ribbon I use is my favorite). You could add some jute twine also. The cotton stems are also great for a rustic look. I hope this helps! Thanks again for watching- blessings! -Kelly

I actually do not make my own wreath forms with pipe cleaners, I purchase wreath forms that already have much better twists already attached. The wreath forms also have a bit of a raised center that helps with the shape of the wreath. I order my forms from craftoutlet.com. I use the 15" wreath forms which actually makes about a 24" wreath. I just love using these forms (the "work wreath" not the "pencil wreath"). The twists are nice and fluffy and come is all colors. I just incorporate them into the design of the wreath and don't have to try to hide them. The wreaths have 18 twists. Hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching! Blessings- Kelly

+primpumpkin Thanks so much!! I honestly think it would turn out fine. Some of the wreath forms I use actual have a bit of an inset on the inner ring and my wreaths still turn out beautiful. I think the key is just being sure to use a good mesh and maybe doing 3 ruffles in each twist instead of two for fullness. Good luck and thanks for watching. Blessings! -Kelly

Great tutorial! Do you have a video that show just how to secure decorations to a wreath? That is where I get stuck....any ideas?
@UnderATexasSky
@UnderATexasSky 9 жыл бұрын
+Daph Van Daph- I think that most of the videos go over attaching bobbles to the wreaths. I generally go with zip ties, floral wire, or simple hot glue, depending on how heavy the bobble it. Honestly- that's the most difficult thing about making wreaths as far as I'm concerned. You just have to decide what will work best with the particular type of wreath you're making. If its something heavy- I try to attach it to the base of the wreath. Although sometimes I do use the twists. Good luck!! Thanks so much for watching. Blessings to you! Kelly

I couldn't find the 10" mesh in the colors I needed. I bought the 5" mesh in what I wanted.. Will this work ok if I double up on the mesh for it to look fluffy enough. Or should get just a 10" mesh (burlap) for the base maybe 1 layer and work from there? I absolutely love your work.
@UnderATexasSky
@UnderATexasSky 8 жыл бұрын
Amy- I think the only difference is that your wreath won't be as wide when it's completed. This wreath with the 10" mesh turns out to be about 24" wide. I'd guess with the 5" it would be closer to 18"-20" across. I don't think that's too big an issue if you use lots of ruffles and make it really fluffy. Depending on the size of your front door- it would probably be ok- just smaller. Thanks so much for watching!! Let me know how it turns out! Blessings- Kelly

+Jenn Figueroa Jenn- Thanks so much for watching! I generally purchase my materials at craftoutlet.com. A lot of times they come within just cents of my wholesale contacts without having to order a minimum amount. As far as using pipe cleaners- you can do this on a plain wire wreath- but the wire wreaths are flat and the work wreaths I use are tiered- with the inner ring being raised- so that helps shape the wreath. I also just don't have the patience to hand tie the pipe cleaners. I generally use the 15" work wreath (this makes a 24" completed wreath) are $5.25-$6.25 at craftoutlet.com (I am not affiliated with them in any way). They also have a higher quality mesh than you get at Michaels. I do spend a little more and get the premium or delux. You can also get a huge variety of the poly burlap there. I hope this helps! Blessings to you. -Kelly

+Cassie Wireman Cassie- Thanks for watching! I've found that the type of mesh I'm using will sometimes lead to that transparent look of the wreath. It can be a problem when you use mesh that doesn't have that metallic striping through it. I'm sure you made it just right but if the wreath base is darker than your mesh, or if you're using lighter color mesh or a thinner mesh, it can happen. I would just try to add more ribbons and/or more ruffles. It's really frustrating when it turns out like that I know. I honestly find that the poly burlap works well for coverage or just using the delux mesh you buy online. The local craft store mesh just isn't a good enough quality and honestly buying online isn't much more expensive. Trial and error is sometimes the best teacher. I hope this helps. Blessings to you! -Kelly

Question, and it may seem like a dumb question, but, what do you do with the twist ends when you are finished with them? are they hidden under the ornaments or is there a special way to conceal them? Thanks! Liz
@UnderATexasSky
@UnderATexasSky 9 жыл бұрын
Wayne Grogan Liz- I actually use wreath forms that are going to go with the colors I choose for a wreath. That way I don't have to worry about trying to conceal the twists- I just incorporate them into the wreath itself. On the occasion that I've used a wreath that I didn't want seen- I've tried to hide the twists behind the ribbons- or even fold them to the underside. I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching! Can I use the 21inch mesh 2 make this ruffle wreath
@UnderATexasSky
@UnderATexasSky 9 жыл бұрын
+elvia Ibanez Elvia- To achieve the true ruffle style, you really need to use the 10" rolls cut into your lengths. However- you can modify this style with using the 21" pouf technique for the main body of the wreath and then use the 10" rolls for ruffles mixed into some of the twists. I'm finding I'm enjoying doing this technique more and more. I HAVE heard of people cutting their 21" mesh down to the 10" width- but I'm afraid that would cause a lot of fraying on the unfinished sides when you gather them. For a ruffle you just really need a shorter roll to accomplish that look, I'm afraid. I hope this helps. Blessings- Kelly

how do you get your wreaths sold???!
@UnderATexasSky
@UnderATexasSky 8 жыл бұрын
Jacquasli- When I sold my wreaths, I mostly sold them locally. I'd post them on Facebook and then word of mouth got me most of my business. I had made one fall wreath last year and a neighbor bought it, then TONS of people in my neighborhood gave me orders for them. Christmas wreaths were much the same. I made and sold probably 15-20 wreaths between September and December of last year- it about did me in! But honestly, for me, there was just not enough profit in making wreaths to sell for how much work I was having to put into it (I work a regular full-time job also). So last year was the last year I made wreaths to sell. Craft shows are a great way to sell also. Otherwise, once you have to figure shipping for sales made around the country- it gets really expensive. I think that's why people on Etsy price them in the $100s- I sold mine for $50-75.
