a lost art.. thank you. An old friend, a UK trained plumber in the 1930's used to recall lead joints whipped with a muslin cloth soaked in tallow. Certainly, as a child in the 50'sin Australia I can recall the telephone men in their tent "whipping" long joints with a magicians bull fighters cape! No music is necessary please as it distracts from you. Thanks for sharing you rare skill.

This is the worst thing about plumbing today people who have no idea how to do the job. I have had 1st day apprentices burn lead better than that, in fact my wife is better. Please for god sake just teach how to join push fit pipe-work. If you disagree with my verdict on this display of a poor knowledge of the skill then please post a video doing a vertical lap joint and I will eat my words.

Can I just ask can you possibly use a normal blowlamp? to do this with say a special nozzle if there is such a thing, or does it only work with you oxyacetylene,i have never done this lead work, but have done plenty of joint wiping years ago PS Just asking .

Thanks for this. I want to make my own gutter and flat roof, rather than pay for a bitumen job. The lead, though costly, would not be an issue if I did the work. I have no issue with using the torch but can I hire one easily?

Good video. An oxygen and natural gas or propane gas mixture using a "oxy-gas" torch would give a cleaner better (less of a reducing flame) flame and make it easier. I personally would over-lap the lead sheets and use a rosin filled solder to put the sheets together and if the small rise in the overlap was not to plan, take a small wooden roller and roll them out to flat. You would not have to worry about the thin or thick spots that would occur in the molten lead using your method

Solder and lead have different rates of thermal expansion, so not a great idea.

Mastic will eventually break down ‘ where as the gas welded joint will not ‘ anybody can mastic a joint ‘ not everyone can weld a joint ‘ I think he is just showing the process

Sorry Richard but I have to point out some major errors. Acetylene is massively volatile and dangerous. It has an explosive range of 2% to 82% in air and comes in bottles filled with Kapok to stabilise it. It should be rested after transport for 24 hours ideally. Next up you make no mention of operating pressures being equal or the use of flashback arrestors. You don't mention sheet thickness or nozzle size. Preparation of work. Your filler rods look like spanners and the final blobby weld looks like a pigeon spattered it. The whole thing was clumsy and incorrect. If that turned up on my roof it would be scrapped. Also no mention of weld height and an explanation of spatter would enforce eye protection requirement. Handling can be done with bare hands but using barrier cream. Fumes are lethal at 500 degrees over a prolonged period. Please stop. And ideally remove this dreadful lead fudging video. Other comments mention "lead Whipping", it was wiped using Fusdian cotton also known as Moleskin and Tallow. You really need teaching by a tradesperson.

Jon if your getting this please dont think im trolling the guy. I know its easy to slate others efforts but you have to trust me the demo is shambolic. I will get around to loading some stuff. My bug bear is the poor quality of the video when uploaded which I need help with. So please stay with me. Im more than keen to see proper craft skills kept alive and passed to others but the one here is like lead based vandalism. I hope I can get it to you before long. Jon.

No I know you’re not trolling. Its not great welding. I know that. I have recently returned to welding after a hiatus. Its not looking good I must say. Most traditional skills are again on the wain. I think he is trying his best, but even the flame looks bad to my eyes. I look forward to your vid..

Absolutely terrible... way to cold of a fire, why in God's name are you starting and stopping? Get a puddle going and start running a seam adding lead as you need it.

+z400rider08 because he's welding lead together... not steel. Turn up the heat and apply steady heat what you'll end up with is a pool of molten lead.

You can weld lead in a similar way to steep welding. Practice practice.
