Even if you could call the Torah/bible/Quran evidence, it’s poor. If the bible is egregiously faulty then the main character’s existence is likely fantasy. If the existence of Yahweh/Allah is a fiction (Muslims believe in the first five books of the Old Testament) then the god man/prophet Jesus cannot stand, nor any Abrahamic Prophet, such as Muhammad. Faith (belief without evidence) based on the contents of the bible/Quran is suspect, for the following reasons… Of the Canaanite gods. El was the top god (sort of Roman Saturn) Ba’al (Jupiter) was next, then down the line was the war/storm god Yahweh (Mars). The Jews nicked him and made him the creator. The first line of the bible is clearly incorrect. The Earth was formed at least 9.8 billion years after the heavens. How did the creator get that wrong? And, the rest of the creation is wrong. It’s as if an ancient ignorant tribe wrote it all by themselves. &, it takes light 2.5 million years to travel from Andromeda galaxy (seen with the naked eye from Earth by ancient Jews) to Earth. That makes the actual heavens older than biblical heavens. The bible a man made fiction? There are no waters above the firmament. Heaven isn’t up there either, we’ve been there. The tribes of the Middle East wouldn’t have known oceans would be frozen but for the heat of the sun. Yet, in the biblical account, water filled the oceans and outer space, all with no sun, and the light that made up the day was created before the sun? The ancient Jews had no concept the sun caused day and night onto a rotating Earth. The moon isn’t a light. It’s fiction by an ignorant tribe with no access to a god or reality. Adam was made from dirt by magic and he, this god, forgot about Eve, an afterthought. so not an all knowing and wise god then? Snakes and donkeys talk, nonsense fiction, right up there with Harry Potter, though JK Rowling was clearly a better writer with fewer continuity errors. This god set up Eve by placing this magic apple within her reach, before she knew right from wrong. Then punished humanity thereafter. What a vicious god, if not a fictional one? Nonsense fiction, by an ignorant ancient people writing about their mythology, their nation’s origins, steeped in the mists of the past, just the same as the Greek, Persian and Babylonian cultures write about their make believe gods who were equally fervently worshipped. Inanna, the dying and rising goddess was such an example, worshiped for 2,500 years. With more dying and rising gods in the lexicon of ancient myths. Virgin births were pretty common too. Romulus and Remus, twin founders of Rome, born of the virgin Rhea Silvia. In ancient Egypt, Ra (the Sun) was born of a virgin mother, Net; Horus was the son of the virgin Isis. The Phrygo-Roman god, Attis, was born of a virgin, Nana, on December 25. He went on to be killed and was resurrected. Adam and Eve’s children (as Eve was a clone of Adam) and grandchildren (as Cain, Able and Seth only had Eve to produce offspring or with their unknown sisters) could only have been produced by incest, then double incest, according to the biblical account. But, as Eve was a clone of Adam, there would be no genetic diversity. Such a lack of diversity would have meant the death of the human species, ask the Hapsburgs. But then, their created god wouldn’t have known about genetics? The Exodus didn’t happen according to all evidence, acknowledged by the Jewish archaeologists who have tried to find it. The Egyptians never wrote of their army being swallowed by the sea. Mosses may never existed. There is a massive amount of genocide in the bible by a god who failed to get the locals to behave. Genocide because the Israelites needed a land to make home. If a creator of the universe and humans could have just thought a new land, a new island, south of Cyprus, it would have appeared. Easy for a god, not so for an ancient tribe to pull off? Then, this god could have told these others how to behave and punished individuals, if that’s what was needed. But no, he went straight to mass murder. What? And, the greatest god in the universe was defeated by iron chariots: Judges1:19. That is so ridiculous, such a puny god. Or, is it because the story was a creation of a tribe that had no concept of future technologies or tactics to defeat these new Iron Age chariots? I’m sure that a human Napoleon type tactician could have done better. Genesis 19 tells us of Lot being raped by this daughters. And yet this god is moral? He could have changed the course of their predicament, found him a younger wife or servant to sleep with, if a god. More incest. No respect for genetics? A blood sacrifice barbaric religion. The books that were supposedly written by Mosses consist of a linguistic style that didn’t exist at the time of his “life”. It’s a fictitious narrative, written by the Jews to give their new nation an historical legitimacy, and unify them, in the midst of other powerful cultures in the Middle East. Didn’t help much though, they were constantly being invaded and subjugated by more powerful “gods” of other warring nations. Even Yahweh acknowledged there were other gods. Remember the Ten Commandments tablets that were conveniently broken and then without fuss, lost. An all powerful creator of the universe who missed the opportunity to create the tablets out of an advanced technology, Titanium or, something really exotic perhaps? Is that because the Jews didn’t know about such a thing with no understanding of the future? The forging and preservation of such a technology would have cemented the truth of their god. Broken conveniently disappeared stone tablets: clearly, no god involved. Noah and his flood occurred when the Egyptians where going about their cultural and religious practices that continued afterwards; and, their religion was not replaced by the flood family’s immediate ancestors, fanning out from the ark. The Pharaohs and their gods continued unabated. No Yahweh? More incest? Another genetic bottleneck? The Chinese culture and writing developed along a continuum and they too were never taken the religion of Yahweh from the Middle East, by Noah’s relatives. Odd, don’t you think? Do you think? And, the ancient Britons and Australians failed to notice they were meant to be dead. The New Testament, if it is read, critically, is inconsistent and evolves over time. Indeed, the gospels were not written for decades after the death of this Jesus, whose birth and death are still questionable and no date can be asserted with clarity. There’s no evidence that all the first born were killed either in Egypt nor by Herod. I think the Egyptians would have recorded such a calamity and the calamities of the plagues, but nothing. Was it all made up? There is real historical evidence of John the Baptist, but not of the greater Jesus. There is historical evidence of Apollonius of Tyana, who allegedly ascended to heaven, similar to Jesus, but there is no extra biblical evidence of Jesus during his lifetime. There is an historical record of Jesus Ben Pandira but, no Jesus the Galilean outside of the bible. Nothing. There’s Jesus ben Ananias, a rude peasant, who went around Jerusalem in 66CE prophesying its fall in 70CE; he’s recorded in documents outside the bible, but not the biblical Jesus. His alleged disciples never wrote anything they were uneducated peasants. Contemporaries never recorded his miracles nor his troublesome nature. The bible account says he was widely known and a divisive figure that the Romans never recorded. Neither did the Jews. And, the crucified were left to rot on the cross/pole on which they were hung as a warning to insurrectionists? No empty tomb, it’s a fiction to turn a myth into a “fact”. To turn a dead man or a fictional man into god. Pilate was, in real history, recorded history, a truly nasty contemptuous man, he would never have allowed a crucified body’s removal to undermine its purpose as a warning. And, the alleged trial is a tale of the blood cult of scapegoating. Even Barabbus was a literary device representing scapegoating, suggesting it never occurred. Barabbus means, son of the teacher, or son of the father. The gospel writers where representing the two characters as essentially the same, one became the goat sacrifice. And, the twist was that the Jews shouted to let the murderer go, allowing the blame for Jesus’s death to be placed on the Jews and not the imperial Romans. It was very much a political narrative because the Jews and Romans where essentially at war, the destruction of the Temple in 70AD/CE, and this new sect/cult needed to distinguish themselves from the Jewish troublemakers, and the ongoing violence of the time. Paul never knew Jesus and only depicted him as a spiritual vision. He knew nothing of the man and nothing of his life or his teachings. More evidence that the Chrestos (anointed) was mythical? The gospel writers are unknown. The church gave them names years later. The first time the gospels were mentioned was in 180AD/CE by Irenaeus. Indeed, a very prominent Christian, Theophilus of Antioch (Feast day 13 October, died circa 184 AD/CE) said that he came to believe in Jesus from reading the Jewish Scriptures or, Torah. No mention of the gospels, no quoting of anything Jesus allegedly said. That’s really odd because a conversation with a Christian today invokes quotes from the bible. Best date for the gospels is circa, 170-182 AD/CE. The myth of the god man Jesus was created over many years. Mark was first written, not until at least 70AD/CE, say Christian scholars but, as above, likely much later. No record of the star of Bethlehem, of graves emptying, or sky darkening. It’s fiction. No Mosses, Abraham, no Noah, no Flood. As for flying horses in the Quran, that’s straight out of Greek mythology. No one should believe such nonsense today.

They threaten you with a fine which is far more humane than threatening you to starve you so much that you will eat your children's bodies.

The last time I did in depth research, the theological claims lacked actual sufficient proof of the events (and even those that really should have left their mark of the earth. Like a massive human migration, which we have records of all around the world much earlier than the exodus. What moral reason did god have to make pharaoh say no? He says it himself in exodus. “I will harden his heart so he will not let your people go” and he sent plague after plague and then did a little murder spree. Then he killed pharaoh and his army. Do you know what this implies? First of all-lack of free will. Second of all, it implies pharaoh was going to release the Israelites upon request from his brother had god not interfered at that point. Wouldn’t that have been a better, more amicable solution? Why were the teachings of Jesus so starkly contrasted to the actions of god? Have you ever actually looked into how we got to todays Bible? Not as “unchanging” and “everlasting” as the word of god should be. Even from the beginning of its conception, it was passed between different sects and added to and subtracted from and new books were added then some were taken away long BEFORE the council of Nicaea. Since then? The perversion is unspeakable. I remember some of the punishments I received from my incredibly god fearing mother, and I remember thinking they were cruel and unnecessary. And I still do. The harsh punishment came from a lack of understanding between us because “god” drove that wedge in. Might does NOT equal right. That way of thinking hurts people and lacks empathy. Why would you not want to care for and understand your hurting child?

It is interesting that, in the Old Testament, a major them is that God rewards the Israelites when they are faithful to him and punishes them when they are unfaithful, but in the New Testament, Jesus comes along and says that those who are faithful are supposed to suffer in this life so they can be rewarded in the next life. Those Christians you mention may say that they are "storing up treasures in heaven" (Matthew 6:20), or that their light and momentary sufferings are nothing compared to the eternal glory that awaits them (2 Corinthians 4:17). If we follow the Christian assumption that the OT and NT God is the same God, then why did he change his mind? Why is it now that his faithful must suffer, when in the past they were rewarded. Also, if Heaven is so important, then why did he only talk to the Israelites in terms of earthly punishments and rewards?

I would love for everyone to become a Christian, but I don't think we should force anyone into our faith (though unfortunately it does happen). Like you said, it just results in people leaving Christianity later on. We need to love people just as much if they reject our faith. People need to be supported to make up their own decisions about whether Jesus is truly the Son of God. Jesus wanted only the most committed followers; he never forced anyone to follow him. "If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters-yes, even their own life-such a person cannot be my disciple" Luke 14:26, NIV. We usually don't take "hate" completely literally but Jesus definitely had high standards for his disciples.

Kristi, I haven’t taken the time to become familiar with the Old Testament, so your presentation of this material was interesting and useful. It doesn’t change my beliefs or behavior because whatever concept I have of a “god” is so radically different from the Hebrew understanding. It’s useful in trying to grasp what the people of this faith accept. One needs to keep in mind the fact that “god” is not demanding this acquiescence and worship. It’s the spiritual and political leaders of this religion that are utilizing the reward and punishment game to control the people through fear. This was the most effective method of keeping the people in line. The key ingredient is the personification of god. People can only comprehend a god that reasons and behaves in the same manner as a human. That results in a very small and petty conception of god. These ideas were conceived at a time when earthquakes, volcanoes and the weather were considered “acts of god”. It’s sad to realize that there are still millions of people who believe in a god of this nature.

This is such a critical chapter for people with a working moral compass. I remember being in the car with my mom and my brother one time and I asked them what they thought about God commanding people to eat their children. They immediately said, “What?! It doesn’t say that.. absolutely not” I pulled up the verse on my phone, handed it to my brother, he began reading with confidence, and I will never forget the look on his face and the stutter in his voice when he got to verse 53. My mom was equally appalled. I remember also being shocked at how God commanded/endorsed the consumption of one’s children in 4 additional places in the Bible: Leviticus 26:29 (a less detailed version of the curses in Deuteronomy) Ezekiel 5:8-10 (the punishment in action) Jeremiah 19:9 (and again) 2 Kings 6:28-29 (God waited until women ate their children before giving them food the next day) Lamentations 4:10-11 (God made people eat their children as a means of payback-see the end of chapter 3)

@@nick8945 Schucks, so many Christians presume to know exactly what goes on in my own heart and how that translates into where my spiritual life supposedly went wrong. Fact is: only I (and God, if you insist) know what the true intentions of my heart are. I was radically saved and gave my life to Jesus in October 1989. Nobody has the necessary insight into my heart to say that my conversion was not true. In accordance with the Bible this conversion would not have been possible without the working of the holy spirit. So hopefully this answers your question. It's just that, over years, the words in this god-book were repeatedly being proven to be seriously at odds with what nature was showing us.

The pastor of my church always said yes, and that was their motive behind missionary work-to reach as many people with the gospel as possible to prevent that. It’s a feature of the religion to spread itself faster and further. Kristi describes some of the horrific attributes of god, and at 12:24 states she had not read most of those things as a christian. After having been indoctrinated with the christian religion since the day I was born, at age 12 I decided, for the first time, to read the entire Bible. I was appalled at what I was finding compared to what the church taught. The majority of the text in the Bible, and certainly the worst of it, had never been referenced or read at all in church, let alone had there ever been any Sunday school lessons or sermons based on those things. It is obvious that the Sunday school lesson book writers, Sunday school teachers, and the preachers, made common cause in hiding those things from us because there is no way those passages can be squared with what they were brain-washing us with, or with common sense decency and morality. At least 3/4s of what is in the Bible was never mentioned or referenced at all in the church I came up in. Kristi’s comments at 13:05 to 13:59 and 14:46 to 15:15 are succinctly encapsulated in John 3:16-18--ironically the most quoted passage in the Bible by Christians--god loves everybody but those who do not believe in him will be sent to hell.

As a nonbeliever, I am at least relieved to finally know that no one is ever sent to hell, and I certainly do not choose to go to hell, so I will no longer need to worry about that. The worse part of these passages is knowing that all of these horrible curses actually came true anyway despite the Jewish people obeying the commandments faithfully. Subjugation and enslavement by the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks, and Romans is detailed in the Bible itself. Then compound that with all of the horrible events that happened in the Diaspora, the Middle Ages, the Holocaust. If you take Deuteronomy seriously, the believers themselves are to blame for all of it. Not their religious and political leaders' failures in judgement and character. Not their enemies' violence, ruthlessness and avarice. Every bad thing that has ever happened to God's chosen people is a direct consequence of their personal failures, even if they never enjoyed personal autonomy themselves because they followed a king or some lunatic cult leader, or were submissive to their husbands, or were literal slaves to some occupying power. This book gives God, his priesthood and his anointed kings plausible deniability no matter what disasters and outrages were committed against the Jewish people. Deuteronomy is disgusting and I wish everyone, believers included, would bracket this book from the rest of the world's literature and admit that this book never had positive value for anyone of any time. Pre-emptive victim blaming is a scam and we don't have to fall for it anymore.

The Bible promised the Israelites that if they slaughtered and enslaved all of the unbelieving pagans in the land of Canaan, they would be safe in that land flowing with milk and honey. The Canaanites were not accused of not worshipping their gods sufficiently. They were accused of placing their faith in idols that had no power to save them. False nonexistent gods. Israel and Judah are subsequently conquered and enslaved by different groups of unbelieving pagans. How is that possible? Obviously God had no power to protect them. Obviously he was a false god. Kristi, I notice one person disparages the idea that "it's all about context," but I think the context is really complicated. Here, to me, is one of the most important statements in the Bible. In Job 42:7 God says to Job's "comforters": “I am angry with you and your two friends, because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has." Now, as some scholars have pointed out, this is an ambiguous statement. When did Job speak rightly? They have argued that this is an intentional ambiguity. That the Book of Job is a veiled critique of what is sometimes called "Deuteronomic Theology." Your success and happiness in life are determined by how well you follow God's law. When Job was written, thoughtful Jews knew that wasn't really true. There was a lot of undeserved suffering. Another thing in the Bible that is really notable is the story of Josiah in Kings and Chronicles. This was pointed out by the Jewish philosopher Martin Buber. To put it in context, you have to think about what those books say about Hezekiah, another king a bit earlier. It says "Because Hezekiah followed God's law faithfully, he was successful in everything he did." Kings and Chronicles say Josiah followed the law faithfully, too, but he was defeated and killed in battle by an Egyptian Pharaoh. How come? In Chronicles, the writer tries to reconcile it with the Deuteronomic theology. 35:21-23 says that the Pharaoh sent a message saying God had called him to go to battle, and Josiah was opposing God! II Kings 23 treats it as just a tragedy, not some kind of punishment from God. The Kings account seems much more truthful, and Job showed a realization of this. Now, bear with me, I think there is a little more to say about this. Christianity has an additional problem: it doesn’t have what you could call “case law.” In other words, it doesn’t have the body of commentary and dialogue about ethical things that you see in the Talmud or in Islamic jurisprudence. Protestantism particularly opposes anything like that. Everything is supposed to be settled by what the Bible says. But sometimes the Bible contradicts itself. This might not be completely unique to Christianity, though. I understand there is a strand of Judaism called Karaism that also says every Jew must just read the Torah for him/herself and figure out what God wants. That can be pretty hard. An example of how this plays out in Christianity now is a dispute between what is called “Lordship Salvation” and “Easy Believism.” Lordship Salvation means that if you are a Christian, Christ must be your Lord. You must become more like him in behavior. Easy Believism means if you just say the “sinner’s prayer” and decide to believe in Christianity, you are going to heaven. It doesn’t demand any change in the way you live. I saw a video by an Easy Believism adherent who said Lordship Salvation is too hard and that she’s known people who committed suicide because they couldn’t be as good as Christ. This shows that Christians are not doing a very good job of thinking about how people really need to live. We as humans are active beings; we need to be able to feel good about things we do. It isn’t enough just to subscribe to a set of doctrines. I also suspect that Easy Believism shows a certain deterioration in Evangelical Christianity. When you see that Donald Trump is now considered some sort of “Christian” leader, that suggests that a lot of Evangelicals have decided not to demand any evidence of good character. Now, this is not to say that Trump couldn’t be a Christian; but to be one, he would have to say “I used to do bad things; I have now turned away from them.”

Hi Kristi, I just discovered your channel. Good stuff. I too went through the journey from devout to "What was I thinking?" I even studied for the priesthood for 2 years. It took me 12 years of research (this was in the 1970s, long before google) before I came to the same conclusions that you did. One point about Deut 28: the OT god curses with earthly misery, While the NT god raises the stakes and curses with eternal hell. Consider which god is worse And keep in mind Malachi 3:6 "I change not". Keep up the good work! PS I wanted to to "god bless" but somehow it seemed out of place. 😊

Its ironic that a person's decision to study the Bible and strengthen faith is often the very thing that ultimately destroys it. If God is real, he has to know whether your faith is sincere. For this reason, I think its more honorable not to pretend I believe.

We see this in the fable of the two gods/angels (Jupiter and Hermes) who visit Lot and his Wife at Sodom (first winter sign/Scorpio) and they are the only ones to offer hospitality.
