Still John perhaps? They're only scales so it's not like he couldn't play them, he was proficient enough. He continued to overdub later, Killer Queen and Death on Two Legs spring to mind. I guess it's possible Brian did it amongst all the endless guitar overdubs, John was playing his own guitar parts on Sheer Heart Attack...... Tit for tat and all that.
