It's astounding...time is fleeting.
Madness truly does take its toll in today's video essay which is all about one of my favourite genres: the horror musical! I'll be talking about cross-dressing aliens, mean green mothers from outer space, corrupt governments, and why 50s nostalgia just make you shiver...with antici-

22:43 hello, Rocky horror super fan. Brad is not listening to Republican talk radio but instead the resignation address of Richard Nixon. Nixon resigned in August, but as Crim says, this is a late November evening. Now, if Brad were a republican it is unlikely he would relish in the low point of his party (the lowest point in American history for the Republican Party up until this point) on repeat for almost 4 months. But it is something a cheeky Democrat or an edgy Centrist would do

Yeah Brad's a nerd and, if he was real and around today he'd be a 'back to brunch' type liberal, the kind of guy that'd be like 'sure they can get married but do they have to rub it in my face', the kinda guy that woulda voted for like Pete Buttigieg or Bloomburg, but he's certainly not right wing. I mean he is, but he's not knowingly, he'd not describe himself as that.

My dad and I used to go to Rocky horror when I was 15. My sister was like 9 or 10, and would often come along. I continued going. I lost count at around 200 times since 1987. Fortunately they still play It in Mystic Connecticut once a month. Some people in the shadow cast go back as far as the '80s! This movie and the people in the theater got me. Before I totally got myself. I would listen to the complete movie on record. Over and over and over... It really is my favorite obsession. I make sure to quote the movie or one of our responses everyday. If being gay makes me a freak I want to be those freaks.

This is fantastic! You've made me want to revisit Phantom of the Paradise, Rocky Horror and Little Shop, and I gotta see Reefer Madness as well! I'd love to hear what you think of more recent horror musicals like Repo! The Genetic Opera and Anna and the Apocalypse. They're both very close to my heart, and I think there's a lot to unpack in both. Keep being awesome, these videos are criminally underrated!

Musicals are not just for queer people, they are for everyone. I feel it doesn't matter if you are gay,trans,non-binary,straight,black,white,brown etc. but there is something for everyone. Everyone can relate to the trouble of finding love and getting the attention of that person like Seymour does in Little Shop. I feel people can also relate to Rocky Horror in the sense that it's a film about embracing yourself and your uniqueness, not limited to and including sexuality and gender identity.

I LOVE the Tango dance scene in Reefer Madness. And yes, all the songs in that movie are earworms. Now I'm going to have to listen to them again. Thank you.

This really peaked my interest in not just horror musicals, but musicals in general! It’s also just a very well made, informed, and interesting video, I can’t understand why it hasn’t gotten more attention

25:24 Shock Treatment and Rocky Horror don’t take place in the same universe as the events of Rocky Horror didn’t occur in the canon of Shock Treatment and vice versa… it’s an alternate reality where the same people exist

Small correction, Frank refers to himself and the Transylvanians as "unconventional conventionists" (not the reverse as you say in the video) meaning people attending a science convention which he is hosting, who are all unconventional. Mishearing the line in reverse suggests that they are normal weirdos. Not exactly incorrect but it makes the laugh a bit jarring as the line is clearly invoking the kind of simple humour used to open a speech at a convention to make the audience and host more comfortable and transition into the meat of the subject.

I'm still perplexed why phantom has never been adapted for the stage.

Because one of the most popular and iconic musicals of all time is another phantom of the opera adaptation, people probably assumed it just wouldn't be able to compete.

I really liked your analysis of 'Somewhere That's Green'. I had no idea what the significance of the references was, researching this must have been quite a task! I'm also putting off watching the original 1960 movie.. I should go do that. But I disagreed with the conclusions about Little Shop's endings. (It's the only one I'm familiar with okay). My thing is that I think Seymour is, ultimately, more sympathetic in the movie than he is in the musical, and that choice actually kind of guts the themes even before the changed ending. In the musical his guilt and moral corruption plays out much more intensely, and the film cut most of his monologues which demonstrated this. I admit it *is* sadder and more intense if a good man is corrupted... so? Isn't that the point? Aren't we meant to feel those negative emotions in a tragedy? And I don't understand the point you were making about why appealing to the test audiences is artistically important? I've read this argument before from academics, where they try to argue away from the profit explanation for changes in adaptations. And I've never found it compelling. Ignoring the business side of film adaptations (as well as film's nature as a medium and its differences from other ones) in favour of analysing everything as a valid artistic decision seems kind of.. out of touch to me, idk. (I am fully aware that this is valid and encouraged in academia btw, I guess I just don't like it) But I found this video very interesting, and I'm glad I found it!

hiya, thanks for watching and leaving such an engaging comment! i agree that seymour is probably a lot more sympathetic in the movie (i admittedly haven't watched the stage show in A WHILE and relied mostly on the broadway soundtrack and an online script to jog my memory), and yes him being so sympathetic is part of the reason that the ending is so tragic. that's more of a question about the authenticity of adaptation, and i didn't really have the knowledge (or word count...) to comment on it, so my bad at that part! in regards to the ending, i think, at least in academia, we have to analyse even the business of filmmaking, and why things are done to appeal to a broader audience. it's less of a "this is a valid artistic decision" (because i truly think changing that ending was some kind of sin, despite how much i prefer the movie ending) and more of a "this thing was done for a reason, what is that reason, what does that reason mean in wider sociohistorical context". plus, sometimes we have to analyse things at face value. what is the picture saying on its own merit, regardless of what's going on behind the scenes, ya know? that is something worth considering though, so thanks for pointing it out!
