I would like to see you play with the angle from the scythe above the mantle. Move the horseman underthe higher side of the scythe (maybe raise it with a box under the creepy cloth to make it look like he's on a hill?) And put the book on the end by the handle end. Move the gate over a little and spread the tombstones between the horseman and the gate so it looks like he's riding down the hill and through the graveyard. I love the idea of the crows on the scythe too.

I thought the horseman should go under the higher part of the scythe, too. I really love the idea of seeing if she could play around with the idea of perspective and using the props in a way to create an optical illusion of the horseman being in the foreground and the gate prop being in the background and he is riding away from (or towards, depending on which way she places him) the graveyard.

I feel I am also a maximalist!! I used to feel very guilty about this and I still struggle because it’s been so ingrained in me that I just must be lazy, a hoarder, and dirty. Agreed! But I also liked the gold skull. The pumpkin feels very spooky halloween to me and the skull more campy fun. I think it would be great in an entree way, on a drinks cart, buffet in the dinning room, or kitchen as a little faux butler/assistant with a little card or plaque either giving greating or instruction such as "please help yourself" next to a little bowl of candies or mints. Listing the foods laid out incase the host isnt around. That sort of thing.

oh my gosh your ad was SO Cute 💖 i loved it! and your mantle turned out fab . i agree that the leaves were a bit too bright orangey, but the idea of a garland leaves on the scythe would still be pretty. you could probably dry brush them too i imagine? and then have like a more muted brownish tone similar to your pumpkins. if they dont take liquid paint well i wonder if you could use chalk pastels. either way its so fun to see halloween decor going up! we are slowly getting ours around and im trying to spread it out to enjoy the process, but also i am impatient and want all the fall right now 🤣

Loving the mantle so far! I am a mixed media artist. You can do the same technique on those slick pumpkins, but you need to prep them first. You can use *clear* gesso to give them some grit, or give them a veeeery light sanding with fine sand paper to do the same thing.

Spray on matte finish will also work to help the paint stick if you cant find clear gesso. Every lowes/home depot/walmart will carry it.

I absolutely LOVE how this is going!! I would maybe add an LED candle to each jack on the end and maybe one in the cool ol' lantern just to give some fiery touches to it. I love flame effects and it'll be subtle if you find small ones. The ravens and your orange moon will be amazing! And when I saw the Ichabod Crane tombstone at Michael's, I knew you'd be getting it!

I love it! I also think adding some laid flat books/even just flattish boxes wrapped in black paper to bolster a few of the decorations like you did with the trees so they don’t all just visually start at the same place (i.e. sitting on the mantle,) it might be nice, too. Could help you play with the vertical space even more🧡

LOVE this mantle so far. I would take out the bright mini pumpkin and replace it with some random loose skeleton bones. Then it would play off of the skull on the other side helping to maintain that older rich timeframe. 😊 I can’t wait to see everything finished! P.S. Love love love! I just got done frosting my not so little brothers birthday cake today and wish you a happy happy birthday as well!!! Idea- I have some 99 cent store ravens…and you can hot glue black feathers on them to look higher end and realistic instead of hunting down expensive ones. Love this mantle! I love it!! I went with a Sleepy Hollow theme for my mantle too! I’m so glad Michael’s released a few Sleepy Hollow pieces this year. I think I got everything they had and also the branchy tree candle holders they had this year. I hope they expand on it more next year, like they have done with the Poe stuff. I just love all the literary pieces. I would do my whole house with book themed Halloween decor if I could find enough pieces.

I do think small dead-orange (refinished) pumpkins in the middle is needed but if the LED back-piece turns out as you describe, that will look great with no need for the small pumpkins. Right now with how hot and humid it is cleaning definitely feels like the chore it is but having this playing as I worked then peeking in on your progress as I made my own helped me to push along and get done. Thanks as always for your wonderful content. For years, I put nothing up for Halloween as "Im the only one you will see it," but channels like this let me live vicariously until the itch was too much to resist. Last year I let myself decorate a bit, and this year I've already added a few spiders and other small touches to my decor while it was August. Looking forward to adding more as the countdown to Halloween continues! Edited to fix a couple typos but while Im here I wanted to say I love the idea of a small murder of crows with a couple or more sitting up on the sickle.

My eyes wanted the Horseman to be off-center under the highest part of the scythe to fill in that wall space. I love the way the pumpkins that you dry brushed look awesome, and the crow idea would look really great as well. Excited to see how it evolves as you go.

Im not usually one for asymmetry and I generally struggle to picture things in my head but I read your comment and my whole brain lit up like "Yes!" And imagined it. Would maybe be neet if there was a prop undeneath to boost it up to the perfect height and help it stand out more? Edit to add that maybe the prop could be worked in as the base for a the moon Midge mentioned? Supporting it, giving the houseman a step up, and providing a conviently hiding place for wires and any needed battery back. If shapes a bit it could look like the moon was almost clear of the horizon.

I’ve been using Modge Podge on the smooth finish and it helps keep the paint on it when you dry brush. I’ve done it with glass too. The modge podge dries clear and textured .

Hey Midge, I have a tip for you. Walmart and Temu sell a gel like double stick mounting tape. It works great and would help keep your mantle items from sliding around. Like with the bust, you could use some of that tape to keep the skull in place. Hope this helps! Love wha you are doing with your mantle. I’m doing spooky forest-part fall and part Halloween. Nothing in the world like watching your vision come to life!

If you have a Dollar Tree where you live, they have them for $1.25.. I need to go myself before they sell out and get like 10 of them.
