Decorating My Tree With Bioluminescence

The Thought Emporium

4 жыл бұрын

I love the holiday season but have never gotten to decorate a tree, so this year I thought I'd change that. I picked up a beautiful pine tree, and set about decorating it. First I genetically modified some E. coli to fluoresce under black light in a variety of colors. Then picked up some bioluminescent marine algae. In this video I go through how I used these different organisms to make some stunning decorations and decorate my tree. And while I decorate, I took some time to look back at some of my favorite projects from 2019 and talk a bit about all the exciting ones coming up in 2020!

I have to say that this channel is by far the most amazing one I’ve subscribed. It’s science but not just theory it’s practical and with little to no equipment. Then it is also diverse in its topics. I originally subscribed because of the radio projects and the satellite image project, but the biological stuff is fascinating. I’m particularly interested in how the brain computer interface Project will turn out. I wish y’all a happy new year.

well I did it at like 2am so the details are a bit fuzzy.... Kidding of course. I mean, I did do it at 2am, but was done carefully and I kept detailed notes. The long and the short of it is that I found 6 short pieces of silk DNA from various types of silk and spider species, and then carefully randomized their codon usage and ordering to allow the DNA to be successfully printed.

The main issue with generating light from sound, "sonoluminescence" is that it requires very sensitive frequency modulation of a specific area. The resonant frequency of the liquid you wish to suspend a bubble in must be matched, and then maintained. Then once the bubble is captured the device can be tuned to apply pressure to the bubble. If someone coughs on the outside surface of the container of liquid it can be enough to pop the bubble. Also. Temperature is a non considered variable so far. Both the proper operating temperature of the entire device and the active temperature fluctuations from within the bubble. Apparently the gas inside becomes plasma when squeezed properly on all sides. Plasma In a bubble trapped in resonant frequency matched liquid is Supposedly in excess of 10,000⁰F. The bubble will bounce from this tight plasma state back to "full expansion" and shift from that extreme high temp state to under -250⁰ extreme low state and oscillate between the two until disturbed. So the second issue is how to deal with the super cold temp, and harvest the light, electricity, and heat coming off the plasma.
