Good to hear all this. I paint realistic animals. I thought of myself as a painter and not an artist for a long time because I was not being "creative". But and animal can be symbolic and an animal is wild and in and of itself has meaning. Cultural and individual. Looking at the beauty of the animal shows how perfect God is. The amazing intelligence of the animal and the wildness of us is brought forth while contemplating a painting of an animal. I don't care anymore if someone thinks I am not a real artist, I NEED to paint these animals. Many people will use them for decoration and some will truly contemplate and be moved by them.

Totally agree with what Ellie said- Fine art, usually, has a deeper message because it comes from the intelect. While decorative art, usually, has the intent to look pretty and match the trends in decor.

I watched a documentary about how a lot of expensive art is a tax dodge scheme, as people with stupid amounts of money don't have to pay tax on art, and so they choose an artist to patronise, (no matter how dire it might look to the rest of us), and buy it at over priced rates just to keep in storage and hang on to their pile of dosh.

Makes me think of Banksy. He had a piece of art that went to auction. The minute it sold (for whatever crazy amount) the frame was a shredder and the painting was shredded. Could you imagine? Paying millions for a painting and then it starts shredding. 😮 Of course now the powers that be say it’s worth even more now. The statement the artist made was to show how the elites are so stuck in their own world they assign value to arbitrary things. To me art on my walls make me happy. I have my kids art on the wall. My art on the wall. Art my dad collected and I have now. I have art I bought on vacation. It’s all meaningful to me. ❤ Is it worth millions? No. It’s priceless.

How do you think AI will affect this. People can create their own decorative art now for print, but not originals.

I'm so thrilled that I recently discovered your channel. I'm admittedly a KZbin junkie & don't feel a bit guilty about it. Lol I can't thank you enough for this amazing, thought-provoking, & informative discussion! I've been painting for quite a while now & ready to dive into Surface Pattern Design but struggling to figure out how to do both or even decide if I should do both. But, I agree that the two worlds are starting to merge. So, thankfully I think that I should be able to manage both without having my left side brain combatting my right side & keeping me stuck. I'm so intrigued & would love to follow Dimitra's journey as she takes a new path. Thanks again so much & I would love to hear more about the other tangents that you couldn't fit into this episode. I don't understand where you are taking all this. *The beauty is in the eyes of beholder* No matter what voice you give to your Artwork, it won't become worthwhile, if it doesn't connects to viewer. Here gallery owner use their hidden weapon and that is call (*THE ART OF STORYTELLING*) deny all you can but this is a reality.

The dichotomy presented is false. Any painting, if its well executed, has the potential to be turned into a print. I see art as much of a democratic process as any other walk of life. Art should be available to as many people as possible whether it's in print form or originals. ALL art has the ability to enhance a space whether it's a few simple squiggles, one colour throughout (Yves Klein blue) or something more complex. The size of your bank account should not be a deterrent to having a nice picture in your home, so prints of all sizes and descriptions shouldn't be seen as inferior to originals. If that's the argument you're making then perhaps you need to look at the quality of your originals, or maybe you're just chasing the big bucks from just selling originals

Unfortunately, horse heads with lady heads, with loose landscape imagery running through them isn't all that decorative either. Abstract art with simple on-trend color schemes tends to work better in most decorative compositions.
