Love to decorate the shells! I’ve even used small shells and added a magnet to the back for the fridge! So relaxing!

Gretchen, I've watched all of your videos, and love every one! I'm from North Carolina, too! My island love is Topsail Island. Now my husband and I own a home on Lake Wylie, Charlotte. (grandchildren live in Charlotte). Lake Wylei has mussels; haven't decoupaged them yet. I've decoupaged a map of TI in an oyster shell, put in on a beaded necklace. Looks great, and keeps me "close to TI"!

That is awesome, thanks for your kind words 😊. Love our island! I'm sure being near your grandchildren is wonderful!

Thanks for the kind words. I watched so many tutorials and mine were still awful, so I wanted to make sure I really took the time to share all the tiny little things that helped take mine to the next level. I know not everyone likes that, I just found it so frustrating that there were detail I knew must be missing 🤣

Sorry about that. It was the very first video I had ever done and I thought I was doing it for about 10 people in a shelling group I'm in. I've learned a lot since then and tried to improve what people see.

Hi. Loved your video! Thank you. So pretty. I know you said you use Testor's Enamel. All of their paints have a number that coincides with the exact color. I wonder if you are able to tell me the name of the gold paint on the bottle along with the corresponding number please.
@craftingwithgretchen Жыл бұрын
So sorry I'm just now seeing this for some reason. Testors Null 1144TT Enamel Paint, 1/4 oz Glass Bottle, Gold is the full description. Hope that helps. I also love the Krylon K09901A00 Leafing Pen in Gold.

Question, would you recommend painting the inside of the black oyster shell white? And did you paint the outside of the shells? Love your video!

So sorry, this review was held and I'm just now seeing it! Thanks for the kind words and yes, I paint the inside of black shells white but don't paint the outside. I leave the outside of all my shells natural!

Tips on avoiding streaks in the paint finish? Is it brush quality? Or amount of paint applied?
@craftingwithgretchen7 ай бұрын
It is likely how much is applied but perhaps it is the type of paint used or the brush? Sometimes I like only one, just depends on the look you want.

Question about using these as ring catchers. Does just the midge podge hold up as a top coat when using these little gems? You don't show any other top coat. I have some old shells I'm going to give this a try. Love how yours look!
@craftingwithgretchen Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay in seeing this! I used mod podge on these and have had them in my bathroom and had no problem at all with the finish. In most of my other projects (shown in other tutorials) I use duraclear gloss varnish. (I also use several different finishes of that product) Hope you made some and had fun!
@craftingwithgretchen Жыл бұрын
Sorry just seeing this! Yes, I have no problem with them being in my bathroom near my sink. If concerned duraclear is a great varnish that would make sure no issues with the mod podge and water.

Gretchen-what do you do to prepare the shells prior to painting them? (How do you get rid of the fish smell?)
@craftingwithgretchen7 ай бұрын
The shells that I collect from the beach never smell. I know some use a bleach solution. To prep mine I simply soak them in hot water with dawn.

Caspari, sorry about delay in seeing this!
@alexiagautier238310 ай бұрын
Do you add a glue coating over the gold? Also, have you ever sprayed them with a sealant?
@craftingwithgretchen9 ай бұрын
I don't, the DuraClear seems to seal it well enough. (even if they get wet) I don't do a coat over the gold leafing pen, I've never had issues with it.

I absolutely love your videos and am now a Follower. I have just one question, where do you get your napkins and what brand do you use? Thank you for all hour amazing videos!
@craftingwithgretchen11 ай бұрын
Thanks so much 😊 I use Caspari most. But there are lots of brands that hold up, they just tend to be my favorites! I pick up things at local shops as well.

Hi again, Gretchen! I don’t know if you saw my comment above asking where you found the Audubon birds napkin. Now I have 2 more questions. 1..Do you also paint the backs of your shells in the golden enamel? 2. What is your procedure for cleaning the shells and getting rid of the smell? I’ve done multiple steps (24 hr. soak, 3 hr. beach/water soak, washing with dish soap then drying in sun), but they still smell. Help please!
@craftingwithgretchen9 ай бұрын
Sorry, for some reason the comments got stuck in a "hold" spot. The Audubon napkin was from Caspari, I've had it for some time, not sure if they still have. Hmm, I've never had issues with the smell, I find mine in the beach but they typically are up on the beach. As I type this won't let me see your comment but one idea is to boil them if you have not done that and then put in the sun?
@craftingwithgretchen9 ай бұрын
I don't paint the backs I leave them natural but you could.

Where is the best place to find the oyster shells
@craftingwithgretchen7 ай бұрын
I just find mine on the beach in NC. I know lots of people have shared they have reached out to local restaurants in their area that sell oysters and asked if they'll save some for them. You could also purchase online as well.
