Follow along as I go through the steps of mixing, blending and airbrushing Liquitex acrylic paints for this carved "Ward Style" Widgeon Drake. In part 1, I will first seal the raw wood with Krylon matte spray, then prime the sealed wood with Liquitex Gesso. I'll do the tail first, wet blending the two colors together on each feather. Then i'll move on to the rump, doing a little airbrushing using a gravity fed Badger airbrush. The primary feather section, secondaries and wing covert area, along with the body and back will also be airbrushed along with hand painting. I'll finish part1 with a start on the head being blocked in with color.
I speed up the process a great deal by fast forwarding through the repetitious parts of the video then play at normal speed at the important parts. It will be like looking over my shoulder and being right there in person. I keep out verbal instructions because I know it would just be too difficult to explain each step at the same time worrying about filming. I am the one filming what I am doing with no extra help. (Of special note), when I was applying the vermiculation on the side pocket feathers, I wasn't happy with the results, I got them too close together and it covered up the side pocket color too much so off camera I repainted the side pockets and went over them again keep the vermiculation further apart. This was a much more desired effect in the end. Sit back, watch what I do with applying color to this carving, and try on your own to develop your techniques and style with your carvings.
