You are a life saver! I’m test knitting a pattern and could not figure out how to do the rib decrease in pattern. Your instructions not only helped me figure it out, but it helped me fundamentally understand what is actually happening to the yarn and which direction I’m trying to move it in.

Roxanne, thank you so much for the fantastic explanation! I love creating something myself instead of following a ready pattern, and your videos help A LOT to actually get the project done! It’s not often easy to find tutorials that help us to understand the patterns instead of just how to follow them. Brilliant!

Hi thank you for your help with this I have been watching and waiting for tutorials by you which show in detail how to decrease and increase whilst maintaining the many different patterns that I may come across and showing what it would look like using a graph pattern as well. With someone with your talents and expertise actually explaining in detail and knitting it at the same time!! My dream has finally come true and your skills your time your effort and my patience and determination have paid off!!! Thank you so much this means so much I feel like I’ve won the lottery!! I’m disabled and I learn visually so this means the world to me if only you knew how much!!!! I can’t wait for the rest of your tutorials on these increases and decreases Whilst maintaining a pattern. Also if at all possible Please could you do a video with a simple 4 rows or more if possible in a lace pattern repeat that includes yarnovers slip knit psso, and other decreases that keeps the SAME number of stitches for every row. It would be very much appreciated. Thanks again in advance Hugs 🤗

You must be psychic, as I am planning a project which requires decreases in ribbing and I've been knittering (muttering while knitting) swatches.....so I swatched along with this tutorial and now can select what I need. Thank you. By the way I've been knitting fr over 60 years and NEVER noticed the way the needle was pointing and just had to remind myself which leaned right and which leaned left. Another thank you. I never use charts but might start cause the way you explain it, makes visual sense and a shortcut for me. Thanks again.

Thank you! I will still have to--gulp-- do math, but I think I can figure it out now!

Hi Rox. It was really helpful to me that you pointed out how the needle points in the direction that the decrease will lean. So on the purl decreases, does the needle point in the opposite direction that the decrease will lean?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 5 жыл бұрын
Technically, purl sts don't lean at all on the purl side of the fabric, because the appearance of a lean comes from the legs of the stitch, which can't be seen on the purl side. The sts *do* stack though, and the needle will point toward the stitch that will end up on top when you're decreasing in purl. Whether you think about it as "opposite of k2tog" when you p2tog, or if you think about it as needle points right, lean is right for a knit; needle points left, left st on top for a purl, it doesn't matter, because both will get you to the right end result. Whatever helps you remember it is the way that you should use.

How should I decrease if I have a 2x2 ribbing pattern? I am knitting a hat and I am soon reaching the part where I want to bind off, but I want to have a nice, smooth finish, so what would be best to decrease ?

Hello, Thank you for the video it was informative. I have a question. If you were knitting 2x2 ribbing with 14 central stitches left on your needle, would you do the ssk and k2tog the same as the first decrease you demonstrated?

Personally, I would never choose the option that includes SSP. I did a lace pattern once with that and I don't like it. Did you say why one would choose to decrease the rib stitches that way?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 5 жыл бұрын
There are a variety of reasons, one of which might be that the area of fabric that is not decreased is framed with purl columns, rather than knit columns, or is made up of a completely different stitch pattern (i.e. there may not be a column of knits you can use to work the decreases). Any time you need to decrease in pattern in order to preserve both knits and purls, you are likely to be in a position where an ssp might be necessary.

Good morning! Thank you for the tutorials!!! I do have a question. Have you done this in the round? I’m quickly approaching the crown decreases for a hat with 2x2 ribbing and want to have nice, clean decreases like you have in your video. Thank!
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can do this in the round, but you have to think about how many decs you want to do per round, and then decide if you want sections that form wedges with right and left leaning decs, or if you want them to all be leaning in the same direction (all left or all right).

Work the stitches as they present. If it looks like a knit, knit it. If it looks like a purl, purl it.

I need to decrease on a 1x1 ribbing. i want both decreases to be close to the underarm, one on either side (i'm using magic loop). Is there any way to do this and get back on pattern? This probably should be self evident but at the moment I can't get that "ah ha". Thanks a lot. Your videos great :D Thanks
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 4 жыл бұрын
It's the same as for the 2x2 rib. Lean the decreases so that a knit is on top of the decrease. With 1x1 rib, after the first decrease, the rib pattern will be off, but when you decrease the next time you will be back in pattern.

do you only decrease on the rs?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson Жыл бұрын
Shaping (increases and decreases) is often done on the RS only, because it's easier to keep track of the stitch pattern, but there are times when a pattern might need to do them on the RS and WS, if the decreasing has to occur on every row. If the math worked out that you needed to do them every 5 rows, most patterns would have some of the decreases worked every 4 rows, and then switch to every 6 rows, in order to keep them on the RS.
