The ancient Sandship is another example of stellar Zelda dungeon design, especially that seamless transition into becoming a boss arena. Much like Koloktos before it, the boss isn't technically very difficult, but the setup (and spectacle) of it is legendary.

I like the spectacle, but the overall design of the sandship’s boss kind of wastes it IMO. Easily the low-point if the dungeon. Way too similar to Cecilia from Monster’s Inc, and the fight isn’t really interesting, unlike Koloktos.

Problem is the boss is kind of meh compared to Koloktos, which was an absolute gem, the cherry on top of the marvelous Ancient Cistern. The ship is entertaining sometimes but kind of boring if you get stuck.

@@Stratelier Well to continue using Koloktos as an example, I find it really interesting regarding lore. Who built it, how and why? That strange baby-like laughter as it dies is haunting. It feels like it makes sense in context to where it is in the game, but we don’t have much to explain it. Meanwhile, Tentalus only has its self-sabotaged spectacle, since it doesn’t feel like it makes sense. We’re in a pocket of time in the ancient past, and somehow within that pocket our actions on the ship have resulted in this massive sea-creature from that ancient past appearing and destroying the ship. Being a sea-creature, it probably shouldn’t even be able to exist outside of the effect the timeshift stone on the ship, but it’s on such a massive scale that it could barely fit even if it wasn’t moving around. Finally, in regards to gameplay Tentalus is one of the most simple and easiest bosses in the game. Getting in close and pulling Koloktos’ arms off with the whip is a far more interesting way to effect a boss with the dungeon item than shooting the massive, impossible-to-miss eye of Tentalus. It makes the boss a little more vulnerable for each arm you pull off, but it still requires a little more effort to stun it. For Tentalus once you hit the target just once, it’s completely incapacitated for a long time.

SNES Zelda bosses were action battles that might involve puzzle elements, Ocarina bosses were puzzles that involved action elements. that's a fundamental, intrinsic difference that never sat well with me then or now.
