The Tides of Kirawira - OFFICIAL

When it rains on the Serengeti plains, drenching the great herds of wildebeest, days later a flash flood sweeps along a sandy river-bed - it is the Grumeti river, a seasonal lifeline for all the creatures at Kirawira, and especially its giant crocodiles.
The river will ebb away over the next few months - but the creatures that live in it, have developed remarkable lifestyles to survive until it floods again. Trapped in drying pools, they are an annual feast for the riverside predators. An occasion when crocodiles dam rivers, lizards go fishing, storks spear clams and flowers trap the unwary.
As it dries on the plains, the great herds head out towards Kirawira. There, giant crocodiles and catfish are forced to trek along the drying riverbed, in search of permanent water.
Then, one morning, the wildebeest arrive to play their part in this seasonal drama. Primordial carnage unfolds as the desperate herds try to drink at the crocodiles’ pools.
The wildebeest will move on, leaving Kirawira in the grip of the seasonal drought - its only salvation, that away on the plains...it might rain.

I really miss documentaries like this. Just nature and a pleasant voice. No loud annoying music, overly dramatic dialogue, or semi-fictional stories about the lives of the animals.

100%agree. Putting human emotions and notions of cruelty by animals or other human failings on animals just trying to live, has become a real pain. I'm really gonna enjoy this one. 🙂

Being absolutely fascinated with Crocs, my only complaint is that there wasnt more time spent on showing them at work! However, I'm incredibly glad I watched all the way through. A fucking masterpiece of nature photography, and packaged in an honest, unsensationalized manner. No dramatic music, no rapid cut shots. Just nature in all its horrendous beauty with masterful, informative narration with a tone that denotes familiarity and understanding without judgement. It's just fucking delightful, and I wish there were more like this

absolutely magical, especially the first couple of minutes with the filming of the riverbed flooding, thats a hard shot to get right with minimal technology and only a few chances each year to film it and be in the right spot at the exact right time

I remember seeing this particular documentary when I was a boy ( 8-9) im 34 now so it gives you a rough idea how old this is... I loved this documentary so much I watched it over and over again... Great job Deeble and Stone this is absolute first class filming, never watched a more captivating and witty and educative documentary, and the ending is magical. The narrator carried the day, spot on, brilliant and funny and witty. How he’d pause and let the animals join in was amazing. I think the wildebeests must be the dumbest animals in the world right 😁😁

I saw this documentary many years ago when I was a child, at the end of this documentary the river comes alive again and the music gives me a sense of hope, I fell in love with wildlife and music with this documentary, I searched for this documentary for years until its ending music again. listen to because I completely remembered what I had heard, no matter how hard I tried I couldn't find the video and tonight after 5 hours of trying and searching I finally found this documentary, right now I'm just happy smiling and happy tears I am, thank you for giving me such a good feeling as a child, thank you for this beautiful documentary

The OKOKO, we call them catfish. But I do not think they have barbs on them like the OKOKO do. That has got to hurt. A question for you. Some of those fish that were stuck in that water hole 🕳. How did they get so big if the river drys up like that every year? That biggest one probably weighed 10 pounds

You know, I've seen dozens of nature documentaries on the crossings of the Mara River into Tanzania's Serengeti, but I don't think I've ever seen a documentary what happens while the herds are away, or where the wildebeest go after they leave the Serengeti. Amazing doc!

I used to watch this on VHS at my grandma's house back in the early 90s. Even though the documentary is less than an hour long, for me watching this time used to slow down and it always felt as though 2 hours had passed! Great documentary about a fascinating place. Thank you for the upload I has wondered if I'd ever see this wonderful documentary many times!

This documentary is produced by Alan root a renowned English wildlife film maker, these days animal documentaries are not exciting, unlike these good old days in late 80's and early 90's. This documentary aired numerous times on national geographic, but I rarely watched it because wildebeest arrive at 35 minutes to documentary, but then I watched " race for life" by "Hugo Van lawick" and learned about Grumeti River and I was fascinated.
