Mushroom Kingdom architecture is built to withstand just about anything. If you remember, space aliens couldn't destroy Peach's castle, so they took it over instead after scaring away the inhabitants. It was already tough but they probably reinforced it after the Shroob invasion.

Think about the amount of reinforcements and armor Fawful had to implement to mechanize a whole ass castle. The remake did a far better design for Fawful's castle, even giant Bowser couldn't completely destroy it

I'm going to be upfront and forthcoming about this, but this game's finale here blows any other Mario RPG's final act out of the damn water! I mean Super Mario RPG had a unique final area and a cool unique villain to boot, Paper Mario 64 with its whole subversive nature of Bowser being an actual menace with the Star Rod, Superstar Saga with an awesome gauntlet and pretty intense fight with Cackletta's Soul, Paper Mario TTYD with some amazing penultimate bosses and some extremely high stakes with the Shadow Queen at her most powerful, Partners in Time with its whack version of the main overworld (Present Peach's Castle) ala Shroob Castle and great, climactic fights against the Shroob monarch twins one after another, Super Paper Mario with its very cathartic and bittersweet finale in Castle Bleck, where Count Bleck was able to be redeemed with empathy and how Dimentio planned to usurp Bleck from the start. But Bowser's Inside Story's final act is just something special. Yeah, it's sort of similar to TTYD and SPM with the world at our heroes' hands, but I feel it's executed the best here. You start out in Peach's Courtyard as the bros, but this time it's very desolate and eerie. Mechanized Fawfulbots and that sort, Bowser is still well in the flesh after being cramped in that safe by his Elite Trio, all because they sold out to Fawful. Then we're inside the castle and this theme plays, it's somber and hopeless but that final motif in the ladder half of the ost gives us hope that we could once and for all defeat that Four-Eyed Green Bean who's bent on world domination. After the intense final fight with Bowser's greatest rival, Midbus (Now Blizzard Midbus). The Dark Star is at its full power and literally ENTERS ONE OF BOWSER'S ORIFICES! Shit gets intense here, so the bros venture into Bowser's Airway, the Inside Bowser iteration of this song also really hits it well, as it feels like a more subzero version of the song, which is fitting given the Airway's mechanic is around ice mechanics. The Dark Star starts to gain the Koopa Monarch's abilities, making things direr, then the fight against it happens, and the bros "defeat" it. But it's not over yet: The Dark Star is now Dark Bowser, wanting to be reunited with the rest of the Dark Power. Bowser confronts Fawful outside, but Fawful is not as jovial as he was in the first 2 acts of this game, no. He has put up with Bowser and the Bros shit for the last time, and Peach's Castle comes to life in what transpires as the best giant battle in the game. Dark Bowser appears yet again, Bowser and Dark Fawful hunt this counterpart down, the Green Bean Nerd and Koopa Monarch have their final confrontation, Fawful more pissed than ever to the point where he wants all his foes DEAD, and an outstanding character moment for Fawful himself since in Superstar Saga, he started out as nothing but a subordinate of Cackletta, now this proves he's a far greater threat than she EVER WAS given all this he planned and all the shit he got done for Cackletta herself in Superstar Saga, Fawful has no more need of anyone to carry his ploy out, he did this all by himself. Fight goes on, Bowser kicks his ass, then he's a bug.... Dark Bowser finds him and the Dark Power is finally complete, Bowser and Dark Bowser have their first tussle, then go all the way to the balcony for the TRUE CLIMAX! Sure, Dark Bowser may be some DeviantArt color-swap of Bowser, but Bowser's personality makes up for this since the real Bowser disregards his evil monologuing as nothing. Now comes my personal favorite final boss in gaming: "Oh but it's too easy..." I mean, the challenge medal exists and makes it a true final boss. Phase 1 against Dark Bowser is really good, as a sort of Dark Link sort of deal with similar moves to normal Bowser with Fire, Punch, and even a Minion Attack in the Big Form. When you inhale the little Fawful bug, shit gets better. Dark Fawful grows to immense size and is READY to WIPE THE FLOOR WITH THE BROS ONCE AND FOR ALL! Similar appendage phase akin to Cackletta's Soul and Elder Princess Shroob, but better given the context of everything before this moment. Fawful is finally defeated, Dark Bowser starts to go all whack, Bowser delivers the FINAL PUNCH BLOW, and a solid ending transpires. Fawful attempts one last suicide bomb on the bros which frees them, Bowser still wants peach, The Bros and Bowser still have their rivalry but both the Mushroom and Koopa Kingdoms focus their attention on fixing/refurbishing all the damage done by Fawful. Bowser's elite trio renews their alliance toward Bowser, Peach gives him a cake because she knew deep down Bowser was integral in saving the world, and Chackron's final words are really good depending on what level everyone is at. Phew, that was a LOT. too bad Paper Mario got cucked with Sticker Star, Color Splash, and even Origami King. But at least Dream Team and Paper Jam still kept the core gameplay of M&L's predecessors even if they pale in comparison to the 3 games prior. Dream Team's finale was sort of lackluster in a good amount of areas, Bowser's castle.... AGAIN... But the final bosses against Giant Bowser, True form Antasma, and Dreamy Bowser do make up for its faults. Not to mention Bowser betraying Antasma is a thumbs up from me, since it shows some sort of character arc that Bowser has gone through since he's been a real second fiddle in Superstar Saga and Partners in Time, but in Bowser's Inside Story he came off as far brasher and more unstoppable. And given how Bowser has been tricked and played by some mutineers in the 3rd game, is it really any wonder why Bowser would suddenly betray Antasma, since he kind of knew Antasma would throw him under the bus at some point, so Bowser took advantage of Antasma's manipulative demeanor and pulled treason right under the Bat King's nose. Even if Antasma saw himself above Bowser, he still respected him for his real-world strength and Bowser knew could utilize Antasma's Dream World strength. So Dream Team's finale starts off kind of mid but gets better at the final bit. Paper Jam's finale, however, was absolute asscheeks. Neo Bowser Castle??? Literally ripped it from Dream Team!! But I guess the boss gauntlet with the Kamek Duo, Koopalings, and Shiny RoboBowser were pretty neat.... Alright, there it is. Coming from a diehard fan of the Mario and Luigi franchise... Too bad Alphadream had to file bankruptcy, I hope Nintendo actually does something with the IP like giving it to Retro Studios when they finish up with Metroid Prime 4. But we could at least hope.

Hard agree. The finale of BIS just hits different. The other Mario RPG finales are cool and all but they just feel like another part of the game but a bit grander. The place where the others finales end is the middle of BIS’s finale, that being trying to reach Fawful before he awakens the Dark Star and the fight with Blizzard Midbus. A big part of why it’s so great to me is how they handled the Dark Star. In most other stories involving an ancient evil it just decimated the main villain and if it doesn’t, the main villain trivializes said artifact into just being a power-up. Having both of these happen halfway elevated both villains: the Dark Star is still a threat even at half power and Fawful manages to still be just as much of a threat even with only half the power and a dwindling arsenal, showing how far he’s come since SS (also I think it’s really interesting to see Fawful forced into a situation where he isn’t in control, since he was in control the whole game). Along with that it changes the status quo that’s been more-or-less the same the entire game. Playing off that I think it’s cool how the penultimate fights with each are effectively Phase 1 of the potential final battle with each while the final boss is like Phase 2 to each of those fights. And both fights feel important in their own right: “stop the Dark Star from escaping Bowser’s body with his DNA” and “finally brutalize Fawful and destroy the last chance he has at fixing his plan, fought right where it all began” respectively. And the final boss I feel carries what is already a really good finale: it’s been built up throughout the entire second half of the finale (and in a broader sense the entire second half of the game), the villains’ status quo mirrors the heroes, the dark hurricane raises the stakes higher than ever before or since (in ML), Bowser v Bowser is cool as hell, the rematch between Fawful and the Bros, Fawful’s final form being the strangest and most distorted in the series, all of the attacks are cool as hell, there’s a lot of events during the fight (like Dark Bowser healing and growing, the inhale battle for Fawful, Fawful growing, grounding Fawful, the final punches), etc. The other final bosses are cool but just feel like closing off the rest of the game. BIS’s final boss feels like that AND a full event unto itself, two battles going on at once, taking full advantage of the game’s main gimmick. Super Peach’s Castle of Fury is also dope as hell and the fact the damage Bowser causes to Peach’s Castle sticks after the Dark Star dies really elevates that shot. Junker is a cool boss too but not super plot relevant.

This was always my favorite part of bowsers inside story. Even though its not my favorite game in the series (i know im in the minority on that). For me it's Superstar saga dream team then this game. I always loved walking through like this dark errie castle.

This is kind of why I think inside story is unfairly number 1 because nobody knew about mario and luigi until inside story where as me I was playing it since the series start. Which is why the first one was my favorite superstar saga. I think if people started off with the first game like i did it would probably be different. I get why people like inside story cause it's bowser he's funny and he's got that personality however the reason I name it number 3 for me is because it kind of takes away from the main two characters of the series: Mario and luigi. Like I want it the to be focused on just Mario and luigi their brotherhood and relationship thats the biggest appeal of the series. So that's why superstar saga and dream team are my two favorite cause ironically it's the only two games in the series that focuses 100% on Mario and luigi and not another character(s).
