Hate the starter pet thing. My daughter's first pets were garden snails. Made her do research so she knew how to keep them, feed them and take care of them. She had those snails for a few years before she slowly released them into the garden. She loved Bob, Jinx and Monsoon. She named them after drag queens because snails are hermaphrodites. Lol. Fast forward a few years and Now she's got a cat. She wanted something smaller but realized that there was not enough space in her room to be fair to the animal. Cat has full run of my house lol but we love watching these adorable creatures here. It was actually your channel that showed her she didn't have the space.

Yes, I agree they are not for kids. had taken in two different pigs at once. They came in cages from the pet store. And my daughter adopted one pig from shelter. And we thought at time buying store cages are fine. After watching a few different channels we see it's not enough room. And yes very expensive to keep. We still have them in cages though, we can't seem to save for different cage set up. We're always stuck getting what they need and not want. But they are worth it. We love our piggies!

I agree with you. No animals should be considered a easy or starter pets. I recently spent over $700 on a Peachface Lovebird. He was having seizures. He had an x-ray and full blood test, feacal test and had take home pain, anti-seizure and sedation drugs. I've also had to euthanise a newborn guinea pig that was deteriorating fast. That cost me a little over $200, this also included a consultantion.

Instead of hay you could also give them some straw to burrow. We get some pretty inexpensively from our local farmer and they really like the different texture. They do nibble on it a bit but they love to ruffle around in it. Of course have hay in hay bags etc but it gets wasted a lot less

Love your videos Austin. You are enjoying the guineas as are we . It's beneficial to see different ways of cleaning, various liners and other items available for guinea pigs to help enjoy the hobby. I've got 4 piggies. 2 boys and 2 girls. Each pair is in a 3x2 enclosure. The boars' pen has a divider lengthwise. I've been creating more space in the piggie designated room so that I can increase the size of boars habitat. I like the information Austin mentions about caring for guinea pigs in general, whether a person owns 2 or 200. There is probably more cleaning involved than non guinea pig owners would think. This is true whether habitats are cleaned every few days or more or less often. Through trial and error over years, I've kept some ways of doing cleaning and changed other ways. I've used various forms of substrate ( the many products available to use on the floor of the habitats) and I've learned that some shapes of habitats work better for accessing the piggies and for cleaning as well. A owner who enjoys being creative, organized and is open to experimenting with how to make this hobby fun and practically run, will be a good fit for raising guinea pigs. 😊😊

Any tips for Piggies that have decided not to be bonded anymore? They have separate paddocks that are just about 3ftx3ft, would like Them to have more space but it's what I can give fore right now, but the paddocks are side-by-side since i know they are still herd animals. Should there be a barrier between them? They do sometimes chew the cage and grumble at eachother, so I didn't know if them being that close still was stressing them out? An extra thanks for all your videos! It has helped me out tremendously in learning + Adjusting to having some Piggies of my own! and I'm sure my Little Men would thank you too!

Have you thought of using Chaff on bottom of litter trays or cages, ask your hay farm supplier. Chaff basically chopped up hay n comes from a variety of products, Oaten, Lucerne, Wheaten, Rice hay. Benefit of these products maybe cheaper then wood chips, second it's another food source. Third, Oaten which I use instead of "liners or chips" is absorbent, so maybe you or your viewers can give it a go.

In case a parent stumble by looking for a child appropriate pet and wonder what else could work if not guinea pig I can recommend looking into crested geckos. Unlike leopard geckos they don't *need* to eat bugs unless they are babies and otherwise eat a powder you mix with water. Their tank is more about height than width so it doesn't take much space, they are pretty fragile so it would require a responsible gentle child but you feed an adult about every other day and mist the vivarium about twice a day and if you want to really have easy upkeep you can make it bioactive where little cleaner bugs eat the feces so it more or less care for itself. They also don't require a bunch of expensive heat lamps and like room temp. Very easy to maintain.
