Also the videos for the "Song Machine" cycle are so fun to watch, I love that.

Humanz has aged like a fine wine to me. It was the first Gorillaz album I was able to be around in the rollout for, and I still have vivid memories of hearing those first four singles when they dropped on the same day. I had been a passive fan of the band for a few years but Humanz really got me into them. The past three years have been a crazy blur of odd T-Mobile sponsorships, setlist changes for a multi-year long tour, and a buggy Facebook chat game trying to break Murdoc out of prison, and I wouldn't change any of it. I love that each and every piece of Gorillaz media exists, I can't wait to pick up vinyl versions of G Sides and D Sides on record store day, and I absolutely can't wait to see how the Almanac stacks up to Rise of The Ogre.

OKAY I can't believe I'm saying this cuz I agreed with pretty much ALL of the interpretations in this video. But I actually think We Got the Power holds up on the context of Humanz? Some parts of it feel like a super eerie and purposefully artificial positive message song. I think that's just me being biased, but the way the production builds up + the earlier themes of the albums with chanting and being in unison (like The Non-Conformist Oath and Out of Body) it just feels sort of creepy! In a good way. (Also the bells in the song are sort of spooky and remind me of On Melancholy Hill.)

Hot take: Humanz is, for the most part, the band’s most consistently and effectively conceptual album and would be recognized as such if not for the complete tonal whiplash between Hallelujah Money and We Got The Power
@badcaseofthebajabada4 жыл бұрын
Wow respect for being bold but cannot disagree more. Plastic beach maintains both a consistent theme in environmentalism and glitzy, manufactured production throughout and demon days has themes of general political distrust and aesthetic is also reasonably consistent. Humanz is chaotic and definitely dark, but do have those out of place tracks. Even momentz is consistent sonically but substance isn’t there. I understand the concept they were saying was there, but execution definitely felt lacking. Sorry to sound like a snob and respect your opinion but I’m not sure where you derive this from

Just got this recommended to me (as I was listening to gorillaz ha) and I don’t really watch these kinda channels but as a die hard gorillaz fan,; *loved* this. The effort and nuance in this video is palpable and, while I might not stick around, I have to praise you for the work that went into it. Here’s a couple of random thoughts I had: It’s very nice to see actual criticism of Humanz as it usually gets tons of unfair hate for really strange reasons. Oh and the point about them taking chances to create something unique/interesting is exactly why I love them; not everything lands (imho, everything is perfect but again; die hard fan ha) but when it does land it can create a really interesting track. And hell fucking yeah for mentioning how good do ya thing’s 13 minute version is! I *adore* that track so damn much and I’m so annoyed there’s no instrumental for it. I want it so bad. But yeah, tldr: You are great, your content is great, this video is great, do ya thing’s 13 minute version is great and I’m probably not gonna watch _every_ video of yours as I don’t usually enjoy channels like this but I’ll absolutely be silently watching when a musician/band I like gets a video.

Can you add Godspeed You! Black Emperor to the poll? I’d love to see you do a dive into that musical style

I always thought the three song run in plastic beach to be rhinestone eyes-stylo-superfast jellyfish, i mean i can see it as a four song run but there’s no way you can leave rhinestone out of it

I think there are more tracks from D-Sides that are worth checking out. I would recommend listening to We Are Happy Landfill, Highway (Under Construction), Rockit, Murdoc Is God and Stop the Dams. Maybe even The Swagga or Spitting out the Demons. These are really worth it! 🙂
