i’d say more S/T and DD, Plastic Beach is great and all, but it’s more of a plot album for me. It’s probably just because there’s a lot of odd songs that break the quality for me, whereas there isn’t a single outlier on Demon Days as far as i can tell. Still, bangers, just not my favourite.

Humanz has aged like a fine wine to me. It was the first Gorillaz album I was able to be around in the rollout for, and I still have vivid memories of hearing those first four singles when they dropped on the same day. I had been a passive fan of the band for a few years but Humanz really got me into them. The past three years have been a crazy blur of odd T-Mobile sponsorships, setlist changes for a multi-year long tour, and a buggy Facebook chat game trying to break Murdoc out of prison, and I wouldn't change any of it. I love that each and every piece of Gorillaz media exists, I can't wait to pick up vinyl versions of G Sides and D Sides on record store day, and I absolutely can't wait to see how the Almanac stacks up to Rise of The Ogre.

I remember watching "19-2000" on MTV as a kid and instantly falling in love with the band. The music and video were so different from anything they would usually air that Gorillaz burned themselves deep into my brain. And although I was not crazy about "Humanz" or "The Now Now", I will follow the band into the future and see what they will come up next. Also the videos for the "Song Machine" cycle are so fun to watch, I love that.

OKAY I can't believe I'm saying this cuz I agreed with pretty much ALL of the interpretations in this video. But I actually think We Got the Power holds up on the context of Humanz? Some parts of it feel like a super eerie and purposefully artificial positive message song. I think that's just me being biased, but the way the production builds up + the earlier themes of the albums with chanting and being in unison (like The Non-Conformist Oath and Out of Body) it just feels sort of creepy! In a good way. (Also the bells in the song are sort of spooky and remind me of On Melancholy Hill.)

I'm loving these discog dives. There's a lot I didn't know about a lot of these bands and artists I've been jamming to for years. It's like a history lesson that helps me appreciate them even more!

Hot take: Humanz is, for the most part, the band’s most consistently and effectively conceptual album and would be recognized as such if not for the complete tonal whiplash between Hallelujah Money and We Got The Power

Wow respect for being bold but cannot disagree more. Plastic beach maintains both a consistent theme in environmentalism and glitzy, manufactured production throughout and demon days has themes of general political distrust and aesthetic is also reasonably consistent. Humanz is chaotic and definitely dark, but do have those out of place tracks. Even momentz is consistent sonically but substance isn’t there. I understand the concept they were saying was there, but execution definitely felt lacking. Sorry to sound like a snob and respect your opinion but I’m not sure where you derive this from

Im gonna say the tonal shift between those two songs to me feels like this. “Oh crap here comes the end of the world welp get ready.” To then the people realize...”wait we have the ability to make the world a better place”. Or at least thats how i felt it

Yes, absolutely. The difference between the last songs always came across as a "choose your own ending" to me, but that's just because I'm trying to excuse the problem.

I recently discovered the rest of Gorillaz (the album) and actually really liked Double Bass. I use it sometimes to almost put my life on soundtrack for a couple of minutes. Lets say im going to read something but dont want totalt silence. I'll just put on Double Bass and make the reading groovy....Idk....Gorillaz (the album) is actually pretty good now that i think about it

Ayyy some Double Bass appreciation! That song sounds so detached that you can listen to it whenever you want to chill or focus on something. I love listening to it while in the car or when I'm studying. It's eerie but in a comforting way, if that makes any sense. Gotta love Damon's crazy mind

I had an absolutely garbage day and was trying to find something to pull me out of it. Watching you explain Gorillaz with such passion and intelligence was exactly what I needed-thank you for this. I definitely need to check out more Gorillaz songs. Also hey, if you’re reading this and you’re having a shit day or time, I’m with you. You’re not alone and despite how it may seem, this isn’t the end of the world. You’re smart, you’re wonderful, and you’re gonna get through this.

I really enjoyed Ascension, Busted and Blue and Carnival off Humanz and realized i didn't listen to the now now and the first two albums since they came out, so that'll be how I spend my Thursday morning. Also had no idea how complex the lore was behind this band, what an undertaking. Thanks for the clear explanation!

hey uh idk if you were aware but the intro pics for phase 1 and phase 5 at 1:42 and 14:16 respectively are not (at least partially) official art the phase 1 artwork is a piece by glowrillaz, a popular fan artist on twit, insta and Reddit tho they do mimic hewletts style quite well I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the origin of the other art too

Just got this recommended to me (as I was listening to gorillaz ha) and I don’t really watch these kinda channels but as a die hard gorillaz fan,; *loved* this. The effort and nuance in this video is palpable and, while I might not stick around, I have to praise you for the work that went into it. Here’s a couple of random thoughts I had: It’s very nice to see actual criticism of Humanz as it usually gets tons of unfair hate for really strange reasons. Oh and the point about them taking chances to create something unique/interesting is exactly why I love them; not everything lands (imho, everything is perfect but again; die hard fan ha) but when it does land it can create a really interesting track. And hell fucking yeah for mentioning how good do ya thing’s 13 minute version is! I *adore* that track so damn much and I’m so annoyed there’s no instrumental for it. I want it so bad. But yeah, tldr: You are great, your content is great, this video is great, do ya thing’s 13 minute version is great and I’m probably not gonna watch _every_ video of yours as I don’t usually enjoy channels like this but I’ll absolutely be silently watching when a musician/band I like gets a video.

I think there are more tracks from D-Sides that are worth checking out. I would recommend listening to We Are Happy Landfill, Highway (Under Construction), Rockit, Murdoc Is God and Stop the Dams. Maybe even The Swagga or Spitting out the Demons. These are really worth it! 🙂
